I was just talking to the chef. He was having fish and chips in town. He told me it is windy and cold so he's not walking the course today for the practice round.

Pick Change me.

Bye Bye Hideki. I don't think you will do so well with the weather conditions in Northern Ireland. Hello old seasoned Irish golfer Padraig Harrington and welcome to team touch.

I think I have alternate Fox.  I wouldn't know him from a bar of soap.  I won another week in the league so I have gotten my entry fee back and starting whenever it starts the FedEx is the end of the season for us and I have made the playoffs.  Not sure of my seed, but I am in.  I seem to be hot or cold.  I am not afraid of coming in first and then coming in last.

This is one of my favorite weeks of the year.  For a couple of reasons.

I do love watching links golf.  I love to play links golf even though I suck at it.  I just like the fact the Brits are OK with a course that's brown, the ground is like pavement, and the ball does wacky things when it hits the ground... and what about those bunkers?!  Just love it.  Then the fact its on at 4AM, yes please, sign me up to watch it early in the morning before I do my own silliness.

Then, and this is the bigger reason, we schedule our member/guest on the weekend of the Open so if you tee off early you can watch some golf while eating breakfast (or a buddy of mine used to have a Bloody Mary party that started at 5AM, I was never invited but I always thought "How fun is that?").  So it's three days of frivolity and golf instead of the office and when they can, I have childhood friends come out and play.  This year a kid I have known since the summer after 4th grade when he moved into the neighborhood is flying in from the east coast to participate.

First day is best ball, second is a chapman and then the derby, then the third day is a Stableford type scoring based on handicap.  Last year was my friends first golf tournament ever and he was so nervous, even though I explained I don't play in it to win it, I play it in it so he had a reason to come to MT.  The last day we get paired with a guy whom I really like and he can sense the nerves so he proceeds to get my partner pretty drunk, we didn't have time for a sports psychologist so he used what was available to him, and he had a good enough time he is coming out this year.

All of this to say, you won't see me around these parts until Sunday at the earliest.

I don't remember the first Open I watched - woulda been late 80s - but I DO remember thinking it looked like a completely different planet. Absolutely did not look like the same game we were playing in the woods of NC. Like "Ok, it's golf but it ain't like any golf I've ever seen." And of course, the European players weren't nearly as present over here as they are nowadays. Was like "Who ARE these dudes?"

Then when The Legends in Myrtle Beach opened up - very much links inspired -

heathlandmyrtlebeachgolf.jpg

... me and dad played it and it totally got me. So we'd play it every summer when in MB.

Masters week is rad but this is DEFINITELY my favorite.

... Couldn't agree more with you both. There is just something so pure about seaside links golf where the game was originated. I LOVE that bunkers are an actual hazard, not something to aim for green side on par 5's. I LOVE the options around the green and so cool to see a European player putting from 25yds off the green. While I have no desire to play in it, I LOVE seeing the difficult and constantly changing conditions that challenge the best players in the world both physically and mentally. And maybe my favorite, I LOVE the unpredictability of the bounces with poor shots getting good breaks and good shots getting pure breaks, again testing the mental fortitude of every player. And I LOVE being on the west coat and waking up to my DVR and watching it from beginning to end. Weather is always challenging here in July so being in the AC and watching golf all day isn't a bad way to avoid the heat.

Here is my parlay for this week:

Scottie top 20
Rory  top 30
Rahm  top 30
Zander top 40
Viktor  top 40

... Most of my favorite US courses are faux links style courses. There are some huge oak or pine tree lined courses I love but no trees, wind and heather type rough is just so interesting. Prarie Bluff was my favorite course back in Chicago:

Same here, but even as a young adult, I was surprised every year (when weather cooperated) that lower scores weren’t posted. Then I finally played a true links course, the Tribute here in DFW. While I’m sure it’s nothing compared to Ireland and it doesn’t get the weather, it does sit on a large lake with nothing to stop the wind. Completely unforgiving rough, deep bunkers and fast, undulating greens. But so much fun!

... I played the Tribute about 20 years ago and right there with you, a ton of fun. Hitting over the "hotel" and playing the 1st/18th from St Andrews was just so very cool. I was playing a draw back then and hit a pretty big hook trying to drive the green and it still ended up near the first tee a good 100yds left of my target but in play. Probably the widest fairway in tournament golf.

I want to make that trip to play golf in Northern Ireland, Ireland, or Scotland in the worst way.

By far my #1 (realistic) destination and just haven’t been able to make it work yet with family commitments.

Next summer, same problem. I have a milestone birthday, but a golf trip is not going to happen as that will be right when Son #1 heads off to school. It will happen eventually, maybe before Son #2 is out of the house, perhaps not, either way it’s all good.

The other issue is with my travel crew. I’m not going to do a trip solo, for me that feels lame. But my usual travel group….they have zero problem with getting it cleared with the missus to go anywhere in the States. But as soon as a passport is required, spouses are mandatory.

I have brought up several times that makes no sense. For us on Eastern time, travel time to Ireland is often shorter than San Diego, and always much, much faster than getting to Bandon. So why the distinction? I don’t know, I’m not the one coming up with it.

So if the crew can’t get aligned and I don’t love the idea of a solo golf trip, the missus in my house is excited to do such a trip (she knows I will be thoughtful about the golf aspect for her) but that creates a logistics problem with two teen boys at home who don’t play golf.

First world problems indeed. We should all be so lucky as having to sort this out. 🙂

Leave em home.  I have had to drag my wife to Scotland and Ireland, and while she was bored being in some small town all alone for 5 hours, she would do it again.  Though, and it actually came up again at a party this weekend, I was complaining when I talk overseas I get the same pushback even though there is no woman alive who wants to fly that far, walk around in the wind and rain, and then have dinner with 4-8 guys who are yammering on about the awful golf they played.

Yeah, I felt pretty bad for the Mrs. during the NC trip. I played 4 out of the 6 days we were there and all the tee times were around 8AM. So waking up around 5AM and being absolutely worn out by like 9PM ... definitely not her kinda schedule. We did stay at mom's for the bulk of the trip so she could at least hang out with her. But still.

We've now agreed that future golf-heavy trips would be done solo 😂

You’ve changed picks so often this week my computer stopped allowing me to make edits under your name.

We've now agreed that future golf-heavy trips would be done solo

At the party my wife said exactly this.  If there is a "couples trip" and the guys play golf P3P is going solo because it was bad enough just to hear about the course, and she couldn't imagine listening to eight idiots doing the same thing.  Some of the women were actually in agreement, at least publicly, I am sure behind the scenes they may have been saying it can't be that bad and they would like to go.

I really enjoy watching the Open and links golf.  I woukd like to take a trip to Ireland and Scotland to play.  I just don’t know if I would only want to play links style courses, I feel getting beat up all the time wouldn’t be fun.

I think it would work out OK with our four guys and the four missus, because the four missus all know each other (not well, but enough) and they get along great. But I’m not volunteering to coordinate logistics for that.

On the other hand, traveling solo for golf….I just do not think I could enjoy myself that way. Way, way too many solo biz trips early in my career, and the thought of that many meals alone, just not for me I don’t think. I am totally fine getting paired up, but I would miss the camaraderie and ball busting that happens in a group that’s been friends for decades.
