Sports Betting & Heckling…

The heckling of Rahm on Sunday got me thinking.  Have sports bettors figured out they might be able to alter the outcome in a golf tourney via targeted heckling?   Maybe they are not immature frat boys showing off.  Instead they might be hired “muscle” attempting to alter the outcome of a sporting event for the purpose of illicitly winning a bet.  Golf may be more susceptible to this than other sports.  This would be a great reason to throw the dweebs out ruthlessly and without a warning.

what? ... you think a group of drunk word not alloweds would heckle someone just to mess with bets, even if they don't have anything on the line or think it wouldn't affect the outcome? ...

Last week someone yelled in his backswing.  I'm of the opinion it was intentional to throw him off.

Rahmbo seems to get some heckling.

 

There should be like a “shadow company” of mercs at every event.

 

If a fan(s) commit egregious acts, they “shadow” then give them the Brick Top method of dispatch, namely….

Mental toughness.  ONLY you are in control of your swing and what your ball does. Do I appreciate relative silence when hitting a shot - 100% unequivocally YES.  That said I'm the only one responsible for my outcomes.  I've come to realize the chances of everyone being quiet are low.   I'm working on getting to the place where ALL distractions become a leaf floating by in a stream or a cloud moving overhead - yeah thats there - BUT I'M DOING THIS.... RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW. 

 

My transformation from a person with expectations of etiquette and respect on the part of others into "i'm doing THIS." has really helped bulletproof my psyche.  For many years I was so impressed when someone would accidentally make a sound at exactly the wrong time during someone else's shot - immediately apologize - followed by the person hitting the shot saying "What?".  I realized I needed to get to that place.   You can't count on quiet.  You can count on yourself.   I go out of my way to be quiet when others are hitting - but now a lot of the time when someone does something (accidentally) during my swing and says sorry - I have no idea what they are talking about - I LOVE that. 

 

Tour guys are bulletproof.  They deal with all sorts of distractions all the time.  I think when they don't achieve it's a convenient excuse to lash out at a camera or a leather lung fan or someone moving.  If that kind of thing really bothered them they would never have made it on tour. 

 

Does Bobba Booie and Mashed Potatoes have a place in the game - IMO not really.  Is golf better if more people follow it - probably.  This brings me to my next point. 

 

 The Tiger tampon thing was juvenile at best and very bad at worst.  No excuse - utterly stupid. That said - suppose we had a transcript of EVERY word said during every NFL, NHL, MLB, NCAA (football & basketball),MSL, Champions League, World Cup, Cricket (specifically India vs. Pakistan - they don't love each other so much), Boxing, MMA, WWF, F1, and NASCAR,  competition.  Do you think there MIGHT be one or two sexist, racist, homophobic, or generically politically incorrect things said by the competitors?  - just saying

If more golf was match play you would probably see crime organizations attempting to get directly involved with the players and offering them payouts to fix a match. It's been a known issue in tennis for many years, not sure anyone really knows how bad it is.

Van de Velde was driving a new Peugeot right after The Open - probably would have become a big story but he drove it into a creek a couple of times the first day he received it and nobody really ever saw it again.  Utterly broken after failing to profit from his loss, he then began his quest to dominate women's golf.

This is where I think the debauchery the Tour encourages in Phoenix spills over into a bunch of other events where there's less room for it.

 

It's incredibly naive for the PGAT to think they can have a no-holds barred party atmosphere at one event and then expect fans at other events to behave better. The average 30-yo dudebro casual fan isn't making the same distinction between Phoenix and other events. He sees golf on TV with drunks going nuts and figures "I'm going to get drunk and go nuts when the Tour is in my town." End of thought process.

I think the buttheads that are yelling should magically get tickets to The Masters in the mail --- over time folks would wonder why the mounds near the first green were getting larger and a sense of decorum would return to regular Tour events.

 

The WM comment is right on.  For a few years, not that many years ago the behavior was spilling over in a pretty obvious way to behavior in grandstands near tee boxes on subsequent events, "boos" and all.  It was stupid, and that's the way some are, but definitely an issue, and fueled by alcohol most of the time.  I know Nicklaus wasn't enjoying any of it finding its way into the Honda one year but was being somewhat careful in his remarks.

Betting on Golf has been legal in Europe for decades...the betting companies even have kiosks at The Open!

 

Never heard of a scandal...aside some low ranked tennis match fixing and the occasional soccer shennanigans.

 

Personally, I think anyone who loses money betting sports deserves no sympathy...even if there is cheating going on.

Saw Rham react to the early shout nonsense on Sunday at Riviera and it’s just wrong that someone in contention has to deal with that stuff,to say that it doesn’t have influence is not correct - but it seems there is no way to resolve- so they have to deal with the in the hole tossers. Was shocked watching “full swing” to hear the personal verbal abuse to Matt Fitzpatrick  heading down the final hole at US open shocking!!

I've sat courtside at NBA games and home team fans will absolutely yell things extremely loud that can effect a player's mentality. It's not limited to golf.

I know it exists in most spectator sports.  Some may feel heckling would be more effective in altering the outcome in a golf tourney as opposed to “loud” sports.

The big sports books make money no matter who wins.  As a percentage of their business, I suspect golf is not an upper tier money maker.  If some drunken a****** tries to interfere with a shot, they're not going to be on the premises very long.

Exactly. It’s almost Masters time and I’m gonna use my ANGC MIB GIF a bit early this year. 

First wif of any of this nonsense there, they come up from a secret trap door hidden by pine straw and the perpetrators are never seen or heard from again… Calling the ‘pine straw’ pine needles, the ‘first nine’ or second nine’ the front nine or back nine and ‘patrons’ fans, also comes with a consequence, though not nearly as severe. 
*I had also heard no backwards baseball hats allowed??? Is that true? If so I’ll have to research what penalty the “hat police” hand out. 😂
