Aftermarket Putter Shafts: Worth it?

Recommended Posts

Goes to show there isn’t one putter shaft that fits all ‘feels’ and preferences.  I prefer a flexible putter shaft since grew up with one.  These modern ultra stiff putter shafts kill my rhythm and feel.

Yet many others prefer what I don’t.  The keys are understanding your stroke, where peak acceleration and velocity occur, then finding the right putter, shaft and grip that improves your consistency.

@Phabs you hear that? You need to practice more, up those putts to 500 a day. Be the master of your domain.

Exactly what I’m looking for. Thank you. The LAB putter is interesting, but the soft milled blades from Cleveland are tempting as well. Looking forward to seeing the new mid mallet style blades from Scotty hit the market. I loved my squareback but couldn’t put with it consistently.

All that is to say, I would like to get the best putter for me before I jump on a aftermarket shaft. I’m decent on reads and getting better. Coming from Colorado to Tennessee has me second guessing everything due to the speed of the greens and putts breaking more. If I can eliminate some of the face manipulation that I inherently do in my swing, then I think I’ll be able to focus on a few other factors. Sounds like a BGT or another of the options would be a good choice.

I bought the Mezz Max1. I hit the Accra and the steal shaft. There is definitely a different feel to both. I ended up going with the Accra because I liked the feedback it gave me, but honestly I did not see a huge difference on the PGASS putting green. I am not a good putter by any means and didn’t want to drop the cash on a LAB. But after several trips to PGASS trying to find a putter that produces similar results as the LAB I simply couldn’t. I just kept draining them with the Mezz and my dispersion was much better than any other putter. Interestingly I kept leaving the DF3 short and found speed control much tougher. I’d say if money is no issue then upgrade the shaft. I would also strongly suggest trying each one before making a decision. However will you be disappointed if you want to save the money? I don’t think so. I think it’s just about getting used to whatever you decide to get. Everyone is different and everyone has to be confident in their putter for it to work in the first place. So maybe an upgraded shaft will help in the regard.

Buying a new putter soon, pondering what shaft i would like to put in it

Shafts I have tried:

- BGT: feels too boardy for me, bad distance control (or user error)
- LAGP standard: i like it, but in one of my putters, it feels very stiff, but in another putter more smooth

- LAGP SOHO: not applicable for the new putter, but for my Ping Kushin 4, it seems fine. it does bother me that it is a steel shaft with a very thin layer of graphite laminated. is it even enough graphite to make a difference?

- UST All-In Retrofit: didn't really have a strong opinion

What am i looking for? Something not too boardy, don't like that extra stiff feel.

Diamana P105 could be the ticket. It has a touch of flex but it’s no noodle. It provides a consistent strike and speed control is consistent.

@dlow206 You may want to check out Aerotech Steelfiber putter shafts.  Nothing fancy and cheaper than the options you mentioned, but might be something you enjoy.  There are various threads on golfwrx forums that discuss these Aerotech Steelfiber putter shafts (example below, and also via this tailored google-search).

Hello! I am looking at a lab putter and have found out they have several custom shaft options. I am curious. For those of you who have used aftermarket putter shafts, what are your thoughts? Is it worth the money?

What are the differences between the options below, and am to put it simply enough, will this shave strokes off the game (I know, I know, it’s never that simple, but it should be. That’s the whole point of buying different putters and spending more money. So the question must be answered)?

I have personally used a lot of aftermarket putter shafts, KBS GPS, Stability, LA Golf, Diamana, and I feel that they are better than stock shafts if you are looking for a certain feel or weight or extra stability. If you are looking for something with more feel, KBS and Diamana 1.0 or really nice and if you are looking for something with a lot of stability, LA Golf and Stability shafts are really good on that front. Since venturing into aftermarket shafts and found the right one, I did end up putting significantly better. As for it being worth the money, I would say so if putting stats are a priority for you. I always say get fit but either way I hope this information helps.
