Working at a golf course......what is your experience?

It's a no brainer for a course to hire you....a teacher who is used to working with the public and I believe the course will tap into your leadership skills to guide the younger staff and be looked upon as a role model.

You'll do fine meeting lots of customers, members??? and staff.

Have fun!

Seems like the course you'll likely choose will be a high end one.

Assuming you work for 3 months...and the green fee is $125.....and you golf 3 times a week...that's a (likely non-taxable benefit) $4500 benefit....or say $6500 of wages to earn $4500 after tax based on your approx marginal tax rate bracket....ya kinda gotta consider this into the minimum wage you'll receive.....yes....I'm a little too analytical.

ALL industries are struggling to find minimum wage worker...especially since Covid.

Many young kids don't want to work...never mind for minimum wage....the have been spoiled.

As a baby boomer myself, it our generation who have spoiled their kids and made many of them 'soft".

Great points....both courses are excellent and during prime time their greens fee are not cheap so you are correct that I will get a good deal even making minimum wage as worst case.  We have not discussed pay yet and to be honest for me its more about the golf perks and I am actually really excited to work at a course.  Sounds like right now I would be doing a bit of starter work, ranger work and a bit in the pro shop so it sounds kind of cool.  I will keep this post updated with the interview process and what is offered.  When you factor how much I will get in based on course prices it will work out pretty well and I have a feeling It will be a great networking opportunity as I typically am known to have pretty good social skills

When you see of 200 golfers a day the ones that stick out are the morons. The ones who run carts into trees or 150 poles, spit seeds or kick their spikes into the greens, drive on collections, have no problem hitting into people and so on. Go out one morning with the green keepers and go see how many ball marks are left, you will lose faith in golfers pretty quick.

Honestly the vast majority I have been paired with have been great.

LMAO...ok...ok....I don't work grounds crew and obviously don't see the sh*t you see.

I know you have to deal with all the goofs who destroy stuff and act like idiots.

I don't see it because all I see is the group infront and behind me...IF I LOOK.s

I don't actually see it happening, but do see all the unrepaired ball marks, divots and unraked sand traps, etc.

I have seen plenty of times...but not witnessed the act....divots taken out on a putting green...WTF.

I carry a ball mark tool and must fix 4 marks for my 1 ball mark per hole.

I bet less than 20% of golfers carry a ball mark tool.

Especially for the afternoon daily fee guests...IMO....80% DON"T CARE ABOUT PoP.

Most of the 2020/2021 Covid idiot golfers have left....it must have been a real idiot show for you and your team during those years.

We all witnessed it...but not to your extent.

Those 3 roles are good ones to keep the learning experience interesting.....you'll meet a ton of golfers/people.

You'll be in an environment you like.

You'll likely be paid minumum wage...but it's not like you need the money to put food on the table. This PT work and golf will simply keep you occupied.

I really suggest you talk to staff at your 3 short listed courses...you'll find out which course is best to work at.

As I said previously...not all courses are well run...some better than others...but you know this.

Oh, please tell us about the worst one.

I went to play golf with the wife and were paired with 2 guys.

I hit my shot from the blue tees and started to walk towards the white tee where the 2 guys were playing to introduce myself.

One guy teed off really quickly...I could not stop in time...he saw me in his peripheral.....he blamed me for his snap hook into the water...LMAO.

He yelled...what are you doing?...I apoligized and said I didn't think you'd hit so quickly.

His friend was chilled and said to just re-tee.

By the 1st two holes EVERY LITTLE thing would bother this guy.

On the 3rd hole.....he was 8 feet away for a putt....my wife's golf ball was on the opposite side of the hole.....off to the right 5 ft away.

He said to my wife....in a terse voice...."Mark your ball"

I said to him...."I have no problem in anyone asking one to mark their ball

BUT

I'm sorry.... but you don't ask my wife in that rude and abrasive tone of voice...be a gentleman and ask her in a friendlier tone"

I got believe you or other guys on this forum would be not happy with how this guy spoke to a lady....I'm think you'd be offended if he spoke to your wife like this...you had to be there to witness his abrasiveness.

After we finished...his friend said that they were going to play the front 9 again.

Ya...it's likely not the story you were thinking of....but he was so rude.....that's really only the really incident in my 5+ decades of playing golf where we were paired with someone so rude....in a way..... I guess I'm lucky that it's only happened this poorly ....once in my 1000's of rds of golf.

So what is your worst incident?....I gotta believe you have one or more.

Sounds like a good opportunity!@BG5

I have worked numerous roles at a few different courses and will echo the one concern that others have mentioned. When you spend a lot of time at a golf course working, when you get off work you may not want to be at that specific golf course.

I’ve ran carts, worked maintenance, pro shop, and caddied. When I was in the shop it wasn’t bad playing some golf afterwards but I never liked showing up for a shift hot and sweaty from a round of golf. Same with maintenance. Working 6a-2p seems like a great way to play some afternoon golf. Every day when I finished up I was hot, dirty, and looking for some AC. I don’t think I ever once changed into golf clothes and played. The idea of going home to shower and then back to the course wasn’t appealing either. I actually ended up playing less golf when I worked at a course compared to when I didn’t. Full disclosure, with maintenance I was doing that full time during a couple college summers. If it was only 2-3 days a week things could be different.

If your course has a locker room and showers available this would help with some of these issues.

You are clearly familiar with the course, and you need to be realistic with how busy their tee sheet is. Around me, tee times were never needed for twilight rounds during the summer. Now tee times are almost always required and commonly they aren’t available. The idea of staff playing before a 2pm shift could be rare as well. Are you going to be able to tee off at 9:30 or is the course full?

I don’t see any reason not to try it for a summer though. If you don’t like it then no big deal, now you know.

Great points...it really is narrowed down to 3 courses and all are top 25 in the state.

Course # 1 is the nicest and they are well known for outstanding customer service.  The course is always in amazing shape and as of now they are the group that appears to want me the most as 3 different people have reached out to me.  I am curious how the golf will work and how strict they will be with letting me play.

Course # 2 is part of a golf resort with 6 courses and I would be working at the best course which is cool.  The resort is run pretty well but it does get a lot of groups of party groups so that make my job a little bit more interesting 🙂  I would assume this course would be easy for me to play whenver I want as its an upcharge to play and tee times are more wide open that one would think.  Its a great track.

Course # 3 is probably my favorite of all the courses.  its 10 minutes from my house but its run by a local government so its not run super well.  But again I think I could play a lot of golf at it as it appears its pretty laid back.

All 3 would be great so we will see what happens

That’s the funny thing is all the regulars I have great relationships with and have taught them a lot about the game and why I do some things and they are very appreciative of the info I give them. For example, most days I cut 1 brutal pin per 9 holes, if there are more than that that means the first group is pushing us to fast and it’s one way I can slow them down. Also when I cut cups I try and give golfers a playable miss, meaning if I tuck a pin I’m gonna give you an easy chip from the other side. Or giving them actual ideas or facts about green speeds. But we are a daily fee course and the majority of our golfers don’t care or have any personal investment in leaving the course better than they found it.

I work two nights a week in the shop.

Overall it’s a very positive experience.  Just one thing to be aware of if you’re in the shop. If you work the closing shift and you have time requirements about what time carts have to be in, and what is the latest time you send carts out, you absolutely will have issues with customers over it. Guaranteed!  “We play fast, we’ll make it around easily” (have to send the ranger out to bring them in, they’re on hole 13), or  “you know how much money I spend here?”  Sorry, last cart time was 15 minutes ago. “I’m going to call the city manager”

Still worth it. And a few extra dollars in the pocket is always nice too.  Covers most of the summer tournament fees and buy ins for the regular game.

Wow...some great options.

LOL...#1 must really like you or is really desperate if 3 people have contacted you for a minimum wage PT job....could this be a sign of an unware issue?

As I said...it would be wise to chat with some of the staff at all 3 courses...what looks job on the outside maybe be an issue if it is poorly managed.

I'm think you might choose #3....it's closest to you, you like the course, I think a muni might pay more (though this is a kinda a low priority for you....a couple of $'s/hr won't make you rich...lol).

As long as it's isn't really managed poorly it might be your choice.

Worst comes to worst...it's only a PT summer commitment...you can go elsewhere in 2024 with experience behind you....if you choose to do so.

Ya...let us know of the details and what your decision is.

I think you'll have fun at any of your 3 options.

I assume you are ok closing and no need to rush home?

I assume you are also paid by the hour and have a cart person who cleans, stores and locks down all the equioment at night and is also paid by the hour?

So why the rush to get all the carts in?....unless both are on salary for a fixed timeframe.

You have a marshal working until it's dark?

There’s another thread that dives deeply into to the “ carts in at certain time” so I won’t go too far into the whys.

But bottom line, the course rules state all carts in BY sunset (we use a weather app for that exact time each day so  no one can say we’re just making up a time). If the carts aren’t in and it gets dark, there are just too many things that can happen out there. And in our litigation filled society you know where that inevitably leads. That’s why the rush.

And to make it pertinent again to the thread, someone will always push those rules. They want a cart when it’s an hour to sundown. Or our ranger reminds people that they have 15 minutes left, then they try to play three more holes, etc. That’s really my only issue with the part time golf course job.

I am also a school teacher and recently I have worked at two Golf courses in two different capacities. On one I was the starter on the w/e at a Private Club and the other grounds crew at another Private club.  I worked both on the weekends.

Both positions allowed "free" golf in addition and an hourly rate.

The starter position was a little boring, but I met a lot of folks and the managemnt allowed me to go out an play after my shift or go to the private driving range.  I even played with a member and his kids one day.   The golf pro even gave me a free lesson one afternoon.  Everyone was very friendly and I enjoyed the time.  I was even invited to the Christmas Party.

The second job, I raked bunkers and that pretty much all I did.  It was a great work out and I lost some desired weight.  I never played on the course and to paly I had to make a tee time and could only do it on Monday after If there were open spots.  I left that job mid way through the season.

My suggestion is that if you are looking for just a job , do the one that has the best hours that fits in your golf/family schedule.  If you want to get free golf as a perk, pick the one that has the most open policy re: free golf.

Update # 1

I have an interview with Course # 2 above and originally I thought it would be cool to work in the pro-shop or be a starter etc but I did just have a Course Supt reach out to me and ask if I would be interested in mowing greens 3 days a week.  I would only work 3 hours a day and would need to be there at 6:00 a.m. but would be leaving by 9:00 a.m. at the latest and its only 3 days a week.  He says a lot of retired guys love this gig if they are just into it for the free golf.  I have to meet with them this weekend for an interview but it seems like a no brainer and I will have access to all 6 courses and should be able to get a ton of golf in 🙂

I do plan to reach out to the other two courses to see if there is something similar especially at course # 3 since its only 10 minutes from my house.  The other two courses are 35 minutes which is not terrible but not great either

Well Gents,

I ended up getting hire by Course #1 and I could not be happier.  Its run very well and the staff and guys I interviewed with were so professional.  Its no wonder why the reviews of the course on google are an A+.  People rave about the customer service and staff and the course is as good as it gets.  This course gets it and they understand how to treat people and I can see why people pay alot of money a round in primetime season.

The cool thing is the golf privledges.  I get to golf for free and bring 1 guest free of charge as well.  If I bring a 3rd or 4th guest they pay a very small fee 🙂  That alone makes it a complete no brainer as I will be able to play a top course in state for free and do it with my buddies.  Free range and use of the practice facilities which are all world.  They just treat their employees well and I can see why the place is rated so high.  There is really no golf restrictions and they just said use common sense.  If the tee sheet is packed then wait for an opening.  This course charges alot of money a round in prime season so the thought of a foursome being so much money is crazy.  I cannot say enough good things about the guys I interviewed with and I am gonna be doing some early morning mowing and probably helping out in the proshot and guest services area.  I will be working 10-15 hours a week so I am beyond stoked 🙂  It is a bit of a drive but the fact of all the free golf and entertaining I can do is pretty cool.

I applied at prob 7-8 courses in my area and 2 of them (That I did not get the job at) are top 25 courses in the State but I can tell they are run really poorly.  Very bad communication, I know they are in need of filling jobs and here I am a young professional who is willing to work for peanuts gets treated like dirt.  Most courses who did reply out of the 7-8 were very short, rude, and dont get the golf business.  Its also the reason when you read their reviews on google that everyone likes the courses but says they will never come back because of bad service.  I keep seeing jobs posted at these courses and I get very little interest.  I started to wonder if they saw me as a threat?  Still cannot figure it out.

When I got hired at the course I did they were not gonna let me leave without saying yes and made sure I was aware of all the golf perks.  I had 3 people reach out right away via email saying they were excited to meet me and wanted me to come in for an interview right away.  Again, you can see some courses who get it and some that dont.

Really excited about this season and shocked at the golf perks I am getting

Congrats! Sounds like you got what you wanted and that's awesome.

Out of curiosity... How exactly did you approach the "golf privileges" during your interview/conversations? Did you wait for them to bring it up or did you straight up tell them you were mainly interested in the job so you'd have the opportunity to play/practice.

I'm not looking to work at a course or anything mainly just general curiosity about how you went about it and how it was received on their end.

Great question...I first really emphasized how bad I wanted to work at the course, emphasized the great work ethic that I have and how I was excited to do whatever they needed me to do.  I am "all in" and will do whatever they need me to do within the hours that I can work.

They get it 🙂  I have two masters degrees and am applying for a part time job that starts at $14 a hour with odd hours.  Sounds like the job will max out about $17 but they both asked what I was looking for compensation.  I gave them a simple smile and said I would work my tail off and asked if there were any golf perks included with the job 🙂  They laughed and explained what they were.  I continued to emphasize how impressed I was with the entire operation and how I wanted to be apart of it for the long hall.  So I was very professional about it and all 3 courses that I interviewed at all brought it up on their own.

So I dont think you have anything to be worried about.  Make sure you emphasize how bad you want to work and how excited you are ( I really am excited) and once they see the passion and seriousness of the candidate then they will have no problem rewarding their workers when nice perks.

The great thing with this course is the price is so high a round there will be gaps in the day when the tee sheet is open and I am guesstion that times between 12-3 (right before twilight rate) will be perfect for me and my buddies.  I am not gonna abuse it....I will work my tail off....and right off the bat I am gonna really attempt to impress them with being a great worker.  They need me (Prof willing to work for nothing) and I need them so I think it will be perfect for both of us.

It also helps its a public course and not private and there are no leagues or anything like that.  I am familiar with the tee sheet and it does get busy at times but since I am off for the summer as a teacher I have the luxury of golfing anytime on any day for the most part.

Pretty excited and still shocked at the golf perks involved.  I was gonna be happy with free golf for myself but the fact I can take a buddy for free as well is a HUGE bonus.  Added a 3rd or 4th is nothing and I have a feeling my friends will be calling me like crazy this summer 🙂

I have heard of courses that only allow playing golf the same number of days
worked, because they don't want someone working 2 days and playing golf
the other 5 days.

I knew someone who worked at a private course, where he can only play free
on Monday caddie day.  He can bring someone free.

The other thing to think about is working in all kinds of weather and very
early in the AM.

When I was in high school, a lot of teachers worked summer jobs like this.
Some courses/companies are hung up on hiring full time and not having to
hire again when summer is over, depending on winter weather.

My first job was at a golf course, and I worked on various courses for 20 years. My dad was friends with the mechanic at a private club here and when I was 13 he got me a job with the maintenance crew. I worked maintenance for 20 years until I was in my early 30's and could afford to buy a membership. I worked from 5am to 1pm during the summers, and then when I was in school, just weekend mornings. I played 100 rounds a year of free golf from the age of 13 through 33 haha. We were allowed to play whenever we wanted after 5pm, and the clubs I worked at were dead after 5pm so we pretty much played all the time. It was awesome other than the early mornings, but you get used to that. I never paid for a round of golf or a golf ball until I was in my mid 30's! More than making up for that now though.

Can't speak for golf/course directly, but I can echo what alot of others have said about WORKING in an industry that you enjoy as a HOBBY.  If you are putting in the long hours and it's a real job, it'll suck the fun right out of playing. If you are doing this as a part time job to kill some time, you should be fine.

If it turns out to be awful, you can always leave too.

Congrats, sounds like a great opportunity.

Years ago I thought I had a summer job in the bag as a country club starter but it didn't work out at the last minute, always wondered how much I would have played.

If you feel like sharing, what part of the state? Metro?  Up north?  I know that pretty much everywhere here on the west side is begging for service industry help, golf courses included.

One thing that’s fun to learn is the tricks of getting around. One course I worked at (a top 100 course) had really high green fees also. Almost every afternoon the tee sheet was empty after 1. We would go out in 5 and 6 somes or just jam around as 2 in a cart. The way the course was set up you could play 1-9 or 1-11 or 1 - 13 and then 18 or you could play 1-7 then 13 & 18 or so on and so on. It’s fun to play a course out of order some times or set out for 9 and realize how fast you played and get in a couple extra holes.

also you will realize (if you took the job mowing greens) most Supers have a very tight network and once you are on their good side they will be happy to make a call or send an email and get you on another course.

I've caddied at an exclusive club near where I grew up for what will be the past 30 summers.  I've been a history teacher at the middle school level for the last 23 of those years.  I've been very fortunate to work at a special place with a lot of special people, and through that job I've been able to see and do things I never would have afforded without the job, or ever even had the opportunity if I hadn't met the types of people I've met there.  I've seen the club and our caddie program go through a lot of changes over the years, but I'd like to think I adapted to all of them largely in part to the skills I've acquired teaching.  Professionalism, reliability, attention to detail, etc., I think have all served me well and allowed me to keep coming back.  It is a service industry, and I often work with guys who develop relationships with the players, and begin to forget that they're the help and their service suffers.  Whatever role/job you take, keep that in mind, as long as you do the job well, I'm sure you'll have plenty of success and will have as much fun doing it as I have.  Best of luck!
