Grip sizes

Hopefully this isn’t too silly of a question..  i’m looking to find a grip size between standard and midsize.  If I took a standard grip and put 3 wraps of tape under it, would that be half way between?

Not a silly question - but the answer is not always so simple.

 

Basically to get half way between, it depends on what type of tape is used for the additional layers because grip tape comes in different thicknesses.   Generally either 0.010" per layer or 0.015" per layer are the two most common options.    For 0.010" tape - yes +3 layers would be the right (that's 3 layers of build up tape plus the double sided tape).   For 0.015" (which is common if they use the double sided tape for build up tape) you'd only want +2 layers.

 

So talk to the person doing the work - or check the specs of the tape you have if you're doing it yourself to find out which way to go.

Yes. That's a great table.  Just make sure you read the fine print on the right with the details about the tape thickness.

And consider the shaft size as well, as you’ll see in the chart I posted.  Some common shaft sizes are .580, .600, and less common .610 and .620. 
That’s a good tape chart that Brewmaster posted. 
Golfworks advises that their standard 2 sided gripping tape is .07”, so that is .14 total. Which is accounted for by grip manufacturers to achieve a standard size installed grip.

Thanks everyone for the information!   As an update, I found I prefer a Standard grip size with 3 layers of double stick tape.  

 

My local shop did this and i’m not sure if the tape was .010 or .015 😕  The butt end of iron shaft was .600

 

I was testing with a Tour Velvet 360.  The midsize feels ok, but just a bit big, the 3 layer standard feels a lot better than stock and better than midsize 👍   Now I just need to order some new grips and regroup my set.

 2" is the nominal dimension.  2" tape is typically going to have an actual width of 1-7/8" (1.88).

In 6 or more years specs can change.  Another example , chart says Golfsmith (out of business) double sided tape is .005, the similar tape that Golfworks sells is .007.

 

In the end, it’s splitting hairs.

I’d look at it a little differently. Try building up the grip until you like it and then see what the calipers measure for the built size at maybe 3 points of the grip. Top hand, middle, bottom hand, perhaps. Then you have a target to hit in the future regardless of grip brand or whatnot.

Spec sheet predates the chart I quoted - 3M #2090 (the tape in question) appears to have the same specs since 2010.

That's sort of my idea, but thought I'd do the calc's via tape + grip.  Didn't think about measuring 3 points on the outside, good idea to keep the measurement for the future.

 

Either way guys, I realize this isn't rocket science, but I thought it was relevant information the chart appears to be wrong. 🙂

I do something a bit different. If I am playing a .580 butt grip on a .600, then I just use 2 wraps+double sided, as the .580 will play slightly thicker on a .600 shaft. Or If I am playing Golf Pride +4, I push it on from the butt till it stops. On a true mid-size grip, I do the opposite, and stretch it to play 1/4" longer than if I simply pushed it on.
