Older golfers. How light are your iron shafts?

I’m 57 hcp 10.  Down to 95 grams.  My 7 iron carry is 160 in Denver.   I can hit it further.   Definitely lost some swing speed over the years.  Am I missing something going this light?

Distance is one part of the equation, control is the other. Are you still as accurate with the lighter shafts and able to work the ball as well as you were with heavier shafts? If so, I’d say you aren’t missing anything and have only optimized.

Will be 70 on the 31st of this month.  Played Recoil 780 SmacWrap in F3 for the last four or five years and just went UP in weight to Recoil Dart 105's in F4.

 

SmacWraps were in Ping i210 and Dart's are in i230's.

 

Like the Dart's better - same if not more distance and much straighter.

 

I find the heavier weight makes them easier to control throughout the swing.

 

For what it's worth I hit a seven iron 165.

I've played Nippon AMC 880 iron shafts for the last few years (Titleist AP1 718 & 2021 T300's). Think they're around 101 grams and after last year,  I wanted to go lighter and move into senior flex also. Went from the Nippon's to Ping's Alta CB Slate in Soft Regular 65.0g. It's going to be a big change but at 69 years of age I think I'm ready.

62 yo, Tensei Blue AM2 78-86 g shafts.

I'm 57, using Modus 105's. Used heavier DG S300 for 30 years. I really like the lighter shafts.

Also 57 and playing Nippon 125S which are 128g.

 

I've tried lighter and I suck with them. I still hit them as far as I used to, so no reason to change yet.

Always used lighter Recoil shafts but looking for more control so now Going up in weight with the AeroTech SteelFiber I 95cw. Age 67 with 8 hcp

Just turned 62. Few days ago, I went back to my ZX5 with Modus 125 stiff. I had few rounds with Recoil 95 and had hard time getting used to them. I guess I like them heavier.

70 and currently using TT XP95 steel shafts. Find they provide a good balance of distance and control, although distance at this point in life is an oxymoron.

I did just buy a set of brandnew PX95s that I "might" swap out next season, but I am gonna go 105g this year.

Last year I was using 115g PXs.

Funny I can enter senior events at 53, as well....if that's not qualification- I'm at a loss

Yup. When I joined one of the men’s leagues I play in one of the (actual) older guys asked me my age. I told him I was 59 and he said “Oh, you’re just a baby.” He went on to say once you hit 70 things start going to s**t. I laughed it off but eventually found out what he was talking about. Thankfully I’m active and healthy and can still play good golf on occasion, but when I hit driver at my range the balls no longer go up the hill at the far end like they did when I was 57, and there isn’t a shaft in the world that will change that.

playing the lighter shafts was turning my playable draw into a pull hook.

59. Playing steelfiber i95 in irons and i110 in wedges. I still use a 77g driver shaft (Ventus black 7s). I would like to find a lighter shaft there, but so far I just love that profile.

At almost 70 years of age…

In graphite:

    MMT in 70g R

    Recoil Dart in 75g R

    Fujikura Pro in 75g R

 

In steel :

    Nippon Zelos 7 (74g) R - absolutely fantastic shaft as a great alternative to graphite.

 

I may not be able to shoot my age so I play my age in shaft weight 😁

63 here, went from stiff shafts in my woods last year to real Tensi AV Blue 55 R in the driver (SIM) 65gm R+ in the Fw's and Hybrids. I don't play anywhere as often as I used to but I can shoot 2-3 under or 8 over, driver anywhere from 250-270, regular shafts helped me with my right miss.

Decided to change my 2019 P790's w/Recoil 780 stiff to 2022 P790 w/MMT 65 R & MG3's with MMT 105 gm, received them last Nov and will finally get to San Diego this Thursday to play with my new irons, we'll see if I can handle the lower weight from 87gm to 63gm. Stealth2+ driver head waiting to see if it can knock the SIM out!

I am 48, but I have shoulder issues.  My fitter just put me in the steelfiber i80 regular flex.  It seems I have the slowest swing speed on this board and I am a little depressed...

mid-60s and just went to Accra 70 shafts in irons, accra 80 in wedges.  I also really like Steelfiber 70 in irons.

I feel your pain, literally. My swing speed is measured with a calendar instead of lasers and the fancy stuff.
