Selling a club that you made an ACE with...Bad luck?

Stanks

Recommended Posts

Team,

For those that are part of the club (IYKYK), some have said they never use the club that they make an Ace with again. Some don't care. Most will take the ball and never use it again which I agree with but, it's ~2% the price of the one iron you used to score that shot. Obviously, depending on which ball and which irons you use.

I sold my clubs that I had my lone Ace with and didn't care too much about the topic but, others sure let me know that they never would. I'm still playing fine and and haven't hit a rut or anything but, am wondering all of your opinions.

Hit them straight!

Whoa! That's like accidentally opening your umbrella inside as you step off the elevator on the 13th floor on Friday the 13th and following a black cat as you walk under a series of ladders, only to run into a mirror, breaking in the process! You're DOOMED!

J/K. I'm about the least superstitious person you can find. Who swings the club, you or Lady Luck? Until she starts paying green fees, I'd have no problem selling the club. That doesn't mean it might not have sentimental meaning, but as for causing bad luck, I'd just check with your Magic 8-Ball before finalizing a sale.

First one with a 5, second one with a 9! Same season, bought new irons in between - you need a new set! I had to have someone remind me a few holes after the first one not to tee off on a hole I often went OB that I hadn't put the hole in one ball away.

Now that 3w I made double eagle with . . . .

... Scorecard doesn't care about anything but a number. Even of that number is a 1. Doesn't care what club, which swing (for those that tinker), what day or any other variable. I love Hogan saying a shot with a few feet of the pin is a great shot but going in the hole is pure luck.

... Interesting that David Toms holed out a 5 wood with a Bi-Matrix shaft when he won the 2001 PGA Championship and when he was being fitted for new shafts he refused to even consider anything else in his 5 wood or even replacing his 5 wood. Got much better numbers and performance reshafting his 3 wood but his 5 couldn't be touched.

I have to admit, it never occurred to me to keep my HIO iron. I don't think it is bad luck to sell them. I had three HIO and never kept any of the irons. I actually only ever kept the ball from my last one.

Now that you mention it though, I could see me keeping the iron from the next one if I was not too complicated. I would just hunt down a random replacement for the one club I am keeping in the set when I sell them.

I've never had a hole in one but if I did it wouldn't occur to me to keep the club I made it with.

I'm a mid 80's cap. I have had three rounds in the 70's. I have the ball played from each round and score cards.

If I ever get a hole in one I would keep the ball and score card.

I played a few weeks back and missed a hole in one by 2 inches. I'm not sure I would want to remember the club if I got it. It was a 135 yd par 3 and I was playing in heavy winds blowing into me. I used a 6 iron.

It’s bad luck to be superstitious.

In my younger days when I played a lot of softball I would always order two jerseys. One with my favorite number 14 and the other with the number 13. If I went into a batting slump I would wear my 13 jersey and that always seemed to break the slump. When I felt the slump was over I would switch back to 14.

I thought I laid the sarcasm on thick but, damn.

It all started with the irons I bought though. Found them on sale on Rockbottomgolf for a 3-L wedge set and was able to get them set to me for ~100 less than listing price. Insane deal. In immaculate condition. My grips of choice were already on them to sweeten the deal.

Now I was playing pretty average with them once I figured out the new distances etc. But I made that Ace. And I scored them for a great price. But, I sold them and made a little money on them as well. And, my newly acquired set from the proceeds of the lucky set allowed me to buy some immaculate Blades cheaper than the original irons.

It was an overall win I’d say and I’m back in blades.

I wouldn't sell a HIO club, but I'd continue to play it until I decide to replace that set of irons or fairway wood, then work that club into a display of some kind to go with the ball. By the time I take a club out of active service, it is worn to the point that resale value is minimal anyway. When I die, if my survivors want to throw the HIO club and ball in the trash, that's fine by me.

I have one, but I did keep the wedge I hit it with for sentimental value, nothing to do with bad luck or anything else.  Kinda of cool to have that memory and the club and ball I hit it with, but that's just me.

In the end, the memory will be yours and anyone who witnessed it so that's what really matters.

I guess hindsight is 20/20 but it would be cool if you had the room to frame the club, ball, and scorecard in a display.

I know what all the clubs were( all sold now), but no idea where the score cards are and only have 1-2 of the balls.

This is making me think…

I have had 2. Both a year apart on the same day. May 7th of I wanna say 2003 and 2004. Both on the 7th hole of different courses. First one was 208 4 iron. Second was 196 7 iron. I for the life of me can’t be certain what clubs I had. First one I would guess was a Cleveland TA1. I played those forever it seemed like. Had 2 sets. I feel like I changed irons and went to a cavity back but don’t remember for the second one. This was before I starred in the golf Ho business. 😂

Needless to say I don’t have either club. Have a scorecard somewhere for the second one and maybe the golf ball. Don’t really care as I’m not into keeping or collecting things.

I rarely sell any of my iron sets, currently have 7 sets, so I probably wouldn't sell. Still waiting for my first HOI.
