broken shaft

I have a driver shaft that broke just above the adaptor.  Can it be used for anything now, or is the taper too much to put anything else on it?

Son broke his just above the adapter about 3 weeks ago.  Snapped right in two.

You could just use it as an alignment stick/aid.

 

If you're asking if you could put it into another club... that depends on the type of shaft, what club you want to put it into, how far up it broke, and etc... Plus, once you start cutting shafts you start to alter the characteristics. For example, cutting a driver shaft to 5 wood length doesn't necessarily make it a 5 wood shaft.

Technically it does. That's exactly what tipping is. Every "driver" shaft comes at 46" and then gets tip trimmed for different wood usage based on the manufacturer.

 

Should be able to be tip trimmed down and re-tipped and used for a shorter club. If it's good for their swing is a different story all together.

Depends, is there any damage running up the shaft? Look at the manufacturer’s specs on tip trimming for that shaft.

Depending on how clean the break is, it might be used in a 5 or 7 wood.  Adapters are usually about 1.25” in depth including the ferrule.  That’s about many shafts recommendations for tip trimming a 3 wood.  But since the shaft broke there I would just assume that there may be some unseen damage a little farther up so some additional tip trimming should be enough to get rid of that.  That would put you in the range of a 5 to 7 wood tip trim.  Of course it also depends on the make and model of the shaft.  For instance, some shafts are butt trim only.

Is it from the TEE E722 in your sig?  Lifetime warranty on Tour Edge if that was it.

It's not impossible - but it's unlikely.    All wood shafts have a limited length to the parallel tip section which is specifically reinforced in strength to handle the high stresses at the top of the hosel.   That length then dictates the max amount of safe tipping.    Max safe tipping = Parallel tip length minus the bore depth.  Or more commonly with a 3" tip section - max safe tipping would usually be 1-3/4"

 

Assuming it wasn't tipped before the install that broke - a  break above the tip means that you've conservatively lost close to 2" of that tip section if it's a clean break - and you could loose even more if it's a ragged break.    So there is a very good chance of pushing or exceeding that limit.

Based on my measurements, they are usually at least 1.25" not including the ferrule.  Ping is the only one that might be a bit shorter.    Some TM adapters were close to 1.4" w/o the ferrule, 1.5" with.   So to only loose 1.5" of the shaft tip would be extremely lucky (and rare).

Yes, that's a very real concern.

Yes it was.  They already sent me a replacement and told me to keep the old one.  Was looking to do something with it other than throw it away.

Looks like max tip trim is 1”.  That’s for 7 and 9 wood.  So if it’s a clean break, no damage further up the shaft you “might” get away with that, but you’re already into a weaker part of the shaft.  It could snap off when hit.  The damage/injury risk is up to you. If further tip trim required you’re further into the weaker part of the shaft.  Putting into a 3 or 5 wood, same cautions, and it’ll likely feel stiffer.
