Vijay Singh Shoes

Recommended Posts

I was at the Masters yesterday saw Vijay come through. I saw his shoes and could not figure out what they were. Not having a phone didnt help.

After looking last night, I found some articles about him wearing Hoka trail running shoes because of foot pain. He said he has had no traction issues. It will be interesting when the rain comes though.

It is still interesting that with all of the options out there, trail running shoes are the best for him. Makes me wonder about my own selections now.

The Spy site did a good write up of Hoka trail shoes vs. CodeChaos Spikeless golf shoes and found that they didn't hold up comparatively to a stable "made for golf" spikeless.

I was considering going with On Running Trail shoes and it definitely made me reconsider.

Hoka do have some of the most cushioning in a shoe you can get. I prefer them as my everyday shoe cause I'm a bigger guy and their cushion is nice for me, but no way in hell I'd play golf in these. They make the Adidas Boost foam look like a wooden plank honestly.

If you're still interested in trail shoes look for something with a much thinner sole or more minimalistic trail shoe.

I play in Altra Lone Peak trail hiking shoes to accommodate some foot issues. They feel great….good shape for my foot….zero drop…waterproof. The only real drawback is that there is little lateral stability. Same thing with the sole. It’s maybe just a little too soft. For me , though, they’re much more functional than golf shoes.

I get what they are saying, but I have some True Linkswear Ripstop shoes that definitely have less support than my Saucony trail shoes.

My Ecco golf shoes feel more stable, but looking at various offerings I would say you are probably ok with trail running shoes if you can handle Footjoy Flex (for example).

I have tried a couple different trail running shoes, New Balance brand, and although they were very comfortable and I got good traction the side seams didn't hold up very long, they just weren't built for the stress that are placed on a golf shoe.

I play in SpeedGoats daily....feet saver.

Just returned Challenger 7 GTX ...next pair will be the Mafate Speed 4 as pictured on VJ

Don't care what anyone says....Speedgoats are great for golf- they can hold up to trail running conditions - they can definitely carry my 225lbs around the course just fine

I ended up going with a pair of Adidas CodeChaos 22's as my spikeless for the year. I was blown away how comfortable they were; significantly more comfortable than my 360's that I do already love.

Footjoy's and I don't seem to get along. I have a pair of Premiere spikeless I got from my Member/Guest gift last season. Do not like how they feel for a $300+ CDN shoe.

I'm coming off a calf tear and achilles injury combo, but thankfully I'm back on my feet and playing. Taking a page out of the Vijay book, Ive just got these Hoka trail models w/ a Goretex upper I'm going to try out this weekend for course play. Feels like enough "edge support", overall foot support, and traction from some time on outdoor turf, but I'll report back after playing in them.

Yah, I was wearin the G/FORE Gallivanter Luxe in both black & burgundy along with the Foot Joy Premier Wilcox though Maddie, as a HOKA "Ambassador," has been wearin their Tectonic X2(pictured below) on the course since their introduction a lil over a year ago. She was formerly an Ecco Staffer, though says that there is no comparison comfort wise, and they were equal or better than any golf shoe that she's worn, and she's worn em all, with the exception of G/FORE.

I have 11 pair of Hokas, from running shoes & walking shoes to hiking shoes, both low-cut and high-top hikers(both pictured below). I used to wear Ecco & New Balance as my everyday tennis/soft shoes, though off the course they're great and on the course, the X2 give much better comfort than my G/FOREs or FJ's. Traction wise, I notice no difference, as since my strokes, I do not have the balance that I had pre-stroke, so I sometimes slide or lose my balance and I was concerned if they would grip the ground or "give" as a regular tennis shoe would. Well, as the designer said, they are not "regular" running shoes with their sole "pebbles" designed for providing ample traction while running on dirt trails, so they're good in a stationary position on a fairway or in the rough.

The sad thing is that I used to be able to take a full driver swing in my bare feet and today, I couldn't do that if my life was on the line, lol.

Vijay was actually late to the party though better late than never, lol

RP @Forged4ever and @RazorGolf: Thanks for sharing.  Am intrigued by these Hoka (and G/Fore) options, so will eagerly await whatever extra info/ insights you can provide! Happy golfing

I vaguely remember some other Forum thread (and maybe this same Forum thread & earlier posts) mentioned some concern that the midsole stack for the Hoka = unusually tall

i.e. and that conventional golf shoes / preferences for a "zero stack" i.e. the difference between Heel and Toe midsole height = preferably Not too different; and Closer to the Ground.

But i'm also a believer in where "the rubber meets the road" i.e. if it helps you play golf more comfortably and with less aches & pain ... then am ok to try new non-conventional golf shoes.

I am 100% certain the shoes will hold up to walking the course and damp morning conditions. That’s not the concern. The concern is will the shoes hold up to the rotational / pivoting movement through a few months of wear. Anyone have some experience with that?

Yes, Vijay will put a whole lot more rotational stress on the shoes than I will, but I’m also thinking he gets another 12 pair gratis whenever he wants them. 🙂

Yes, Vijay will put a whole lot more rotational stress on the shoes than I will, but I’m also thinking he gets another 12 pair gratis whenever he wants them. 🙂

Madison has been wearing her X2's for just over a year, rotating four pair, depending on her outfit, though she wears the white pair/orange sole 80% of the time, 6 days a week, Playing 3-4 rounds/week in them, for the past year, with 4 weeks of that being in Fla, where she Played 6-7 rounds/week. While she spends a lot of time on the practice tee, most of that is teaching, so she's really not doin much full go swinging there.

Also, in her discussions with one of the designers prior to committing to HOKA, he told Maddie that a competitive trail runner puts much more stresses on the shoe, be it compressive, torsional/rotational or sheer forces than does a golfer. These are serious shoes, regardless of your activity.

Though she gets 3 pair/quarter, she is still wearing the white/orange X2's from her original allotment of over a year ago, as she gifts most of them to her students and their family members, keeping an extra pair in each style/color for herself. She also only wears them on the course, removing them when she finishes her round, as she spends a lot of time walking around the club on concrete, asphalt and some gravel, so to keep the sole integrity, she removes her gamer X2's and puts another pair on.

I hope that this answered your question, @mshills😊

Have a Great Week Brotha👊

The funny thing is that I caught a lot of grief at the club when I first went with the HOKA's as I have always been very conservative and I guess, "old school," regarding my attire and especially my golf shoes, as I rocked the leather AE's up till I got the G/FORE Gallivanter Luxe along with the FJ Premier Wilcox. I couldn't handle the tennis shoe look of the FJ Pro/SLX Carbon, even though they're world class shoes and both my good Bud and my Bro wear em and said that for them, they were much more comfortable than the Wilcox.

Since my strokes and health issues, my game is garbage, so I'm not as obsessive over my shoe gear, as if I'm gonna chop, I might as well be comfortable, lol🤪. Besides, the grey X2's go nicely with blue, black & grey, my three slacks colors, and secondly, I only go out with Maddie, my Bro and a few good Buds, so it's not like I'm parading around in Tourneys and stuff, lolol.

I am now down to my last pair of FJ Classics! I can’t walk the course in them any more because of the weight, but for my bad foot (fractured calcaneus, multiple toe and foot fractures, and the nerve damage unavoidable in a calcaneus fixation) the support of a proper Goodyear welted shoe is still great.

The best all-around option I’ve found so far is the Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour. First time in my life a Nike shoe worked for me. Who woulda thunk it?

I will try the Tectons for sure. Thanks from the South Hills!

These are just a different color of the pair of the Trecton X 2's that Vijay wore at Augusta. In fact Madison, who was at Augusta/Masters, has a contract with HOKA, and was supposed to wear a different pair every day(there are 5 color combos in this style) though she wore the ones that Vijay has in this pic along with the yellow/aqua blue soled pair as they're her fave two color combos, lolol

Women😜🤪

Though I too have all five pairs, I wear the blue grey pair(pictured) the most and I was wearin em on the course before Vijay, lol😂
