Worth it to upgrade to Srixon ZX7 MKII from the original ZX7

I know the audience that I am reaching here, but honestly.

The design changes seem so subtle to me and I am trying to figure out if anyone would even notice from one version to the next in terms of ball flight/spin and forgiveness.

I love my OG ZX7s — but it is spring time and its starting to warm up; so what is a WRX’er to do??

This is my experience based on hitting them at GG or PGA SS, the OG is more forgiving than the Mk II. If someone who has both models disagrees with me, that's fine and I would trust them more. But IIRC, the tour players asked for an iron with more ability for shot shaping. The Mk II has moved mass from the outside perimeter to the center of the face.

If you have a GG or PGA SS near you, go and ask them to hit it and see what you think.

MK II are a bit more refined and as a result, marginally less forgiving I would agree. I do believe if you had either set in your bag with the same shafts and specs, you might notice the topline difference. Possibly the slightly improved turf interaction. But I would wager a bet you would shoot the exact same score. That being said, I am playing MK II myself lol !

And part of this involves what the upgrade gives. This Srixon OG vs. Mk II reminds me of Callaway redo circa 2010.

At the time I was trying to decide between the X20 Tour and the new X22 Tour.  Golf club reviewers were divided on which was better. The hard cases boasted that the X22 Tour was a true "better players" club. But people like me decided the X22T was simply harder to hit - and it cost more.

"New and improved" can be a step backward for some producs.

I played the X20 Tours for about eight seasons - including a reshaft - before I went over to new irons with graphite shafts.

P.S. My backup bag is all TaylorMade clubs I got here and there, with SLDR irons as anchor.

I finally got around to trying the og's so late that I couldn't even get the 4 iron made anymore. I had maybe 6-7 rounds with them by the time the ii's came. I played them both with the exact same specs and kept the og's along with the ii aw. Hard to tell much of a difference most of the time but just found the results slightly better, for whatever reason. Maybe the initial bond.

I played OG the last few years. Preordered the new ones when they were announced. Hit them a bunch at the range but never made it to the course. New ones certainly felt softer(which I didn’t love) and I thought they looked smaller. Ended up selling them and stuck with the OG. Nothing really “wrong” with the new ones.

I think these are very much like anything out there--some are going to prefer the new ones (they're probably a little more workable, but for me, they were less forgiving) and some aren't going to see better results from the OG. I played the OGs for around a year and actually have another set being built with my preferred shaft. When I tested the MKii a few weeks ago, I couldn't hit it comfortably to save my life. Had better results with my current T100-S and i230s I was also testing at the time.

It's all about what works best for you. Go try them! You might see some things you like better, but for me, I'm looking forward to trying the OGs again with the PX IO 6.0 in them. The OG ZX7s were the only set of irons that's lasted more than 6 months for me in the last few years (though my T100-S are at around 9 months at this point). Good luck!

I had both at the same time, my OG ZX7 had a ZX5 4 iron while my MKii are straight ZX7 all the way.  For me, it came down to shaft.  I had the PX 5.5 in the OG which I like but I decided to go a little heavier in the MKii and I think it was the right choice.  The Modus 120X in the MKii is such a great combo for me, I sold the OG set as soon as I got home from last weeks round.  Not that they were bad, they were great but after gaming the MKii a bit, I am much happier.  Srixon rep I played with last week was still in the OG ZX7 so there's that... I don't think there is much in them, just find the right fit and enjoy them.  Some of the best irons available IMO.

I don't find them to be less forgiving, in fact, with each 7 series Srixon, I have been very happy with the forgiveness especially in the long irons.  I also have been gaming the i230 and as good as those are, the MKii ZX7 might be fractionally better for me.

I am internet ready to give the ZX7 MKII and maybe the 5 in the 4&5, I was suppose to go tomorrow for a demo but the guy has not answered yet. 2.5 hr drive so I am waiting to hear he can definitely fit off grass and has some shafts to try.

I was strongly leaning towards the JPX 923 tour or 223 or forged and will still hit them but the ZX7 seem to be made for the hard pan lies I normally have if I can swing them correctly. I tend to be pretty steep and can move OTT when lazy so we will see if anything is better than the EPON's.

For me a proper swing (mine not someone with talent) shows as a slight pull / draw and bad swings are hooked / pulled way left, so anything I can fade on the course would be a nice option.

Just shows how subjective it is. I’ve had both, the prior probably a half dozen different times. I think the MKII’s look better through the set, especially the PW. I also think the feel and sound better. Maybe a hair less forgiving but more mass behind the ball is definitely noticeable.
