Old Fat Dude wins Club Championship - Now with WITB!

[Yuck]

No one is more surprised than me.  I am well over 60 and have been playing my worst golf in nearly 50 years for the last 8 months.  Ironically, I was the only one in the Championship Flight who walked.   I opted not to play in the Sr. Division because they play the shorter tees, which takes away any advantage I have. That being said, after the first round, I was within a couple as all the scores were high.  I was paired with the leader, last years champion.  Last year he closed with a 2 under 70, so I was not optimistic.  In the second round, I continued to hit it poorly, but avoided big numbers.  The first day leader had a case the two way misses and put up a few bad doubles.  By the 31st hole, I had the lead, and for the first time, finally thought I had a chance.  Then he figured something out and played the next four holes 2 under.  We went to the 18th tied.  18th is about 450 par 4, over a lake.  He hit a wide right tee shot, clearly in trouble.  I hit the fairway, but had 190 in with a tree I needed to get around.  I hit a horrible lay up wedge instead of the heroic 30 yard banana cut, and stumbled to a bogie.  He had to take a penalty drop, had no shot to the green and ultimately missed a 10 foot bogie putt.  Anti-climatic ending, but it was my first club championship Win in 10 years.  I now have 4, in four different states, but this was probably my last hurrah unless I start playing with the Seniors.  My wife has 5 or 6 club champs, so I don’t think I will catch up with her.

 

BTW, I barely broke 80, so the moral of the story is never count yourself out.  Even with the clumsy finish, I feel OK.

Push Cart - Clicgear 3.0 with 500 plus rounds on it.  (3rd set of tires)

Irons. Cally TCB, 4-GW.  1 degree weak.  (PW @ 47 degrees). Steelfiber i95 S

Wedges. 54 & 58 Cleveland Tour Raw. TE Spinner Shafts

Putter - SIK DW Armlock, no sight line @ 42”, 8 degree loft, 70 degree lie.

Grips - Lamkin Crossline Cord - standard w three wraps

Shoes. FJ. ??? Size 12 W

Gloves, Kirkland XL.  (Should use XL Cadet with my stubby fingers)

FW. (TC serials) 4 wood Mavrik, adj @ 17 degrees Tensei Pro White S, 20 degree bonded Mavrik, same shaft.  (Heavy weight in forward position on both)

Driver,  Epic Speed Triple Diamond, 9.0 set at +1.  Ventus Blue Velacore “S”.  (I gave up X in driver last year, gave up X in irons when I was 55 or so.

Ball - Vice Pro Plus.

Love performance experiences like that.  You are right, never count yourself out.  I am 70+ and still can't get my head around playing as a senior from short tees.  It's just the way I am cut. 

 

Having a Club Championship at 60 is nearly better than those when younger.  If, for no other reason, it takes more for you to step up at 60, than when we were younger and stepped into challenges all the time.  Again, congratulations.

I’m just going to say.  If I see a 60 year old coming with that bag setup.  Walking.  I’m going to give him the side eye and grin ….. just to let him know that I see him.  And then I’m going to ask him what his screen name is. Because I’ll know he’s on here somewhere!

You should have seen the other guys bag.  Pretty sure he kept his college clubs.  Looked like Titleist 680 blades (old ones), driver probably  A Titleist 910, and no kidding, a Titileist PT 3 wood, must have been from his HS days.   He has some sort of old cavity backed 2 or 3 iron that I don’t recognize.  Looked almost like the old TA 845.

 

I think he is just under or just over 40 years old with a young Family.  He does not get to play a lot, but he is a lot better than me when he is on.  I was fortunate this was medal play, because big numbers is what got him.

I love reading about this. I'm 62 now and I last won the Mens club championship against young pups few years ago. I think I was 58 or so at that time. Since then I've played in Seniors division though. Total of 24 club championships at 3 different clubs.

 

I'll bet the younger guys do not like seeing an older golfer beating the socks off of them. Ha.

I did not beat the socks off of anyone.  This was a battle of attrition.  My 36 hole score was 14 shots higher than my last club championship (different course) 10 years ago.  No one was near par in this one.
