If Rory Hits The Ball So Far......

.....why does he need so much fire power at the top of his bag?  Wouldn't another wedge be more beneficial?

Measurement ≠ Meaning. Motion can’t be taught. It must be experienced. You don’t teach a swing. You design the chaos in which a swing is discovered.

Golf facts = reduction of a complexity which remains unknown. A way to sell certainty where none exists.

Jokes aside, not sure why he carries the 3i. Seems like a gap wedge would be beneficial.

For starters the P730 irons he plays, as Rorsproto, have a stock loft of 47°. Reduces the need for a gap wedge especially if he, like Tiger, has his lofts adjusted to add a degree or two.

It’s not like he’s playing a jacked loft set with a 43° pw.

I assumed he wasn't playing anything stronger than 46, but that's a pretty big gap going 47/54/59. How many players these days have a 7 degree gap between wedges? Would he get more utility w/ 47/51/55/59 or similar vs carrying a 3i? I've watched the guy pull 4i on 240+ yd par 3s what exactly does he need the 3i for?

He's obviously made this set up work for him, but one fair criticism of Rors has been distance control w/ his wedges. I couldn't tell you how many perfect drives I've seen him hit followed by mediocre wedge shots inside 150.  Perhaps he needs more tools at the bottom of the bag?

A few years back DJ had the same problem.  He didn’t get better by adding wedges he got better by betting on Trackman and dialing in his wedges,

Yeah, wasn't implying that there aren't many ways to shear a sheep. DJ figured it out w/ a 3 wedge setup but something like 75-80% of pros have a 4 wedge setup. It's all personal preference, do you want to master 6 shots w/ a PW or 3 w/ a PW and 3 w/ a GW? (FYI that's just an cheap example, not a dictionary of options)

I'm pretty "blah" on Rory so this isn't me swooping in to defend his honor or anything, but considering he's currently ranked 7th on tour in strokes gained approach (and ranked 13th from inside of 100 yards) I'd say he's doing just fine with his current iron/wedge set up.

Now if we want to discuss his putting stats 😬...

Didn't mean to imply that wedge control is his current problem. It's just something that's been pointed out over of the last couple years anytime a "why hasn't rory won a major since 2014?" conversation pops up.

If I were to diagnose 2023, data golf says that his driving accuracy is 7% below the median player and the worst mark in his career. Historically he's been around 2% below the median. He's still 20-25 yds longer than average, he's just finding fewer fairways this year.  Also, he's regressed on and around the greens in 2023 vs 2022.

The  dude is still incredible +2.29 SG-T year to date, just not as dialed as last year (+2.56)

Yeah, he's always had a big gap at the bottom of the bag, probably the Tiger influence. I say always, but there have been times in his career where he throws another wedge in, but it never lasts.

Here are his wedge set ups in his major wins:

2011 US Open: 48,54,60

2012 PGA: 46,54,60

2014 Open: 47,54,59

2014 PGA: 46,52,56,60

I'm pretty sure Tiger used to go 50,56,60, but somewhere along the road he switched to 49,56,60.

I think he's uncomfortable with his driver at the moment.  He liked the older one that became borderline illegal through usage.

Gapping gets more complicated when you hit 3 wood farther than most hit driver. He probably had a large gap around 240-250 that he didn’t like for par 5s and stupid long par 3s.

It’s easier to take a few yards off your PW than your 5 wood.
