Greens on tour are quite a bit faster on average than what 'we' play. With todays fairway woods being hotter and lower spinning, as well as balls spinning less than a decade ago, 7 woods are a popular option for long approaches now.

 

Some tour guys also said they like them out of the rough, since the added height negates some of the uncontrollable rollout you might get on flyers compared to a hybrid/long iron.

I don’t think it’s an old person thing, I think the forgiveness of the clubhead design just makes sense. I would like to see more companies follow Callaway’s UW lead and make some shorter length woods, since they become more for precision at that 7 wood and above area. I personally play a 5 wood at 9 wood length as my one fairway wood.

I’m older. Not a fast swinger. Have a Cobra T-Rail 7 wood. One of the most reliable clubs in the bag. 165-175 range. Very high and straight. Fits a gap between 4 wood and hybrid.

i just purchased a srixon zx mk2 7 wood and really loving how easy it is to hit it. but i'm not sure about my gapping.

 

currently have the following clubs

TSR2 driver (10.5^o)

TS2 4W (16.5^o)

816 H1 (21^o) adjustable +/- 1^o

ZX mk2 7W (21^o)

ZX5 MK2 5i (25^o)

...

 

I heard that it is good to keep at least 1 hybrid in the bag for hitting it out of the rough. probably adjusting the loft of my hybrid down to 22^o makes gapping better?

Even if the 7W and 4H has the same loft, the 7W probably flies further due to longer shaft length

Ugh. I knew I shouldn’t have clicked on this thread. I love my 4i but consistency is definitely an issue, more than any other club in my bag. Think I’m about to go spend some money.

Me too. And I truly like everything in my club. And I'm not really sure how a 7W would fit.  But I'm been curious for awhile...

I literally just bought a new driver and irons in the last 2 months. And said my bag was set for the year.  And thought I meant it. What is wrong with me???

Personally, I really hate the look and even the typical ting sound of a hybrid. I got a Rogue ST Max 7w (actually what Callaway calls a "Heavenwood") a while ago, and it's been perhaps my favorite club in the bag.

 

From the 7w down I have a 4i ZX utility iron, then 5-P in ZX5. If I have a really weird lie, where I have to punch a low roller out of some pine straw or near a root under a tree I will give the 4i a whack... but in all honesty I'm probably just gonna take it out. There is almost never a time where I take a shot with my 4 Utility and don't wish I would've just hit the 5i. Any other time I'm ~200yd out from either a hazard or on a par 5, it's the 7w all day long. Thing is so easy to hit, the ball soars, and often comes down with a nice descent angle. I owe some of my better scores to the Heavenwood, for sure.

 

Researching a little bit on here I saw a commenter say the Driver-4W-7W progression the "Nelly Korda bag" and it inspired me quite a bit. After loving the Heavenwood I got a Rogue ST Max 3W HL, which is basically the same loft as a 4W, that is a beauty for those longer shots and tee shots where I want to stay safe. The 3W is just as good as the H/7W in terms of consistency, but a little harder for me to hit clean off the deck. I ordered myself a TSR2 4W to see how it stacks up.

 

The top of my bag looks like this, loft-wise: D(9* clicked up to 9.75*), 4W (16.5*), Heavenwood (20*), then the ZX5 5i is standard loft @ 25* and it goes on down 3-4* each iron from there.
