On course: wrong place in stroke play

My FC played from the wrong tee box par 3. Missed the green. 
 

Corrected his error. Moved to correct tee box. Hit to 10 feet. 2-putt. 
 

Is that a 5? 
 

First stroke disregarded then general penalty?

Yeah, Rule 6.1b(2) talks about starting a hole from anywhere outside of the Teeing Area.  The stroke doesn't count, the first ball is not in play, there's a 2-stroke (General) Penalty the player MUST correct the mistake by playing from the Teeing Area.  Its not exactly like a Wrong Place (Rule 14.7), its not always a requirement to correct a Wrong Place infraction.

I knew I didn't need the app!

When I searched “wrong place” in the app, it auto-populates “wrong place Penalty in stroke play”. It brings up 3.3, 21.3, 21.2, 21.1. 
 

WTF?

 

So I had to back out and just search “Wrong place”. That brings up 14.7. That’s not so good either as it gives the player the option to keep playing the same ball or correct his error and find out later if it’s a serious breach or not. WTH? It did list the penalty as the general penalty. 
 

It was only after asking here, with Dave citing the correct rule, that I found out where to look. Searching “wrong place” in the app NEVER brings up 6.1. 
 

6.1b(2) covers the situation perfectly. I just wish the search function worked BETTER on the app so I wouldn’t have to ask here during the round. 
 

It’s amazing that we have such helpful folks that WILL help you out during the round. It is one of the many reasons this place is the BEST. 
 

I mean, I know the penalty, and procedure, I just can’t find it to show the guy that played from the wrong box. I used to have the “old” Rule numbers memorized. It’s been 4 years with the “new” Rule numbers. At this point in my life, I doubt I’ll be able to memorize them if I haven’t already. I have to rely on the search function to help me find things, and in this case, complete failure.

As a follow up….

 

This hole was a par 3. Did the player get the nearie/closest to the pin proxy?

 

After he moved to the correct box, he was technically making his first “stroke” on the hole. The general penalty, I think, is assessed later. Or, because of the looming 2-stroke penalty, would he be “hitting 3” and his nearie wouldn’t count?

 

How do you all see it?

If I'm getting the money, he doesn't get the equivalent of a practice shot - if I'm not, happy to sit back quietly and enjoy any argument that might result, lol.

It was a practice shot from the wrong tee. About 30 yards closer he was to play from. 
 

You’re correct I think. Even with the distance difference he still got to judge the wind and loosen up a little. So I think I agree with you.

I think he answered my question in the form I used, @Augster wasn't suggesting it was intended as a practice shot.  I was using the term pejoratively in the context of whether he was eligible for the prize.

Then his story has changed considerably. Did his FC actually say he was practising? I have not yet read any such thing. All OP said was that his FC played his 1st shot from a wrong tee and that is not practicing unless it is meant to be practising.

I'm glad I was able to point you in the right direction.  I was a little curious about where this would have been found previously, so I looked in www.ruleshistory.com at the 2016 Rules.  This was covered in 11-4. Playing from Outside Teeing Ground, Rule 11 covers most issues surrounding the Teeing Ground.  Similarly, the current rules cover this in 6.1, which covers starting the hole.  So the "location" of this really hasn't changed, both sets of rules cover this issue in a similar location.  In each set of Rules, playing from a Wrong Place is covered under the more general topic of dropping or placing.  

 

Please understand, I'm not trying to give you a hard time, just pointing out that the "structure" of the Rules is pretty similar for this specific issue for both the "old" rules and the current Rules.
