New PGAT tournament....2024

The PGA Tour announced Wednesday it will in 2024 launch a new full-field tournament, the Myrtle Beach Classic in South Carolina. An opposite-field event to be played the same week as one of the Tour’s designated events, the new tournament will be played at the Dunes Beach and Golf Club.

Visit Myrtle Beach will sponsor the new event and offer a purse of $3.9 million with 300 FedEx Cup points going to the winner. A four-year agreement was announced, but the dates of the event were not. The full 2024 Tour schedule is yet to be determined.

Monahan knows how to find sponsors. I'm sure the new sponsors are aware of the field they will get opposite a designated elevated event. Please think before posting the typical......."this is a weak field" or "the sponsors deserve better" nonsense.🙂

This is a four year deal......

the sponsors dont really deserve better imho its not like the carolina's dont have enough tournaments as is.

So how’s it work as far as being on TV?

I imagine they are planning on getting good gate/concession sales given the location is a golf mecca.

If it is an opposite field event, I'm sure they would handle the TV coverage just like they do for the other opposite field events (Barbasol, Barracuda, and etc.).

Most likely Golf Channel with somewhat limited coverage and a replay airing overnight.

Are they going to get to the point where they have an event opposite every elevated event?

I hope so, at least for any elevated event that is limited-field, no-cut. I am against the idea of the elevated events being limited-field, no-cut events, but at least this is giving the players who aren't in those fields an opportunity to amass points and earnings. And giving them the opportunity to get enough points to play themselves into future elevated events that they wouldn't get if they were sitting at home.

I think Tiger said Genesis would have a cut

I think he said it's still in negotiations but he wants the Genesis to have a cut. As with a lot of things, we probably won't know, either way, until the Tour announces it, either way.

We really don’t. North Carolina gets some. Or most.  We ( south ) only have the 1.  Compared to how many courses and golfers we have , that’s nuts.   The two states are not the same. At all.

How many PGA Tour/LPGA Tour/Korn Ferry events are there this year in the Carolinas?

pga has had 2 tournaments in sc and 1 in nc with 1 more to go in nc this season(22-23).

the cj cup was in sc but that was temporary so this kind of replaces that.

So two each is "enough"?

I'd think if sponsors are willing/locations are willing wherever they can get them is "enough".

Carolinas seem to support Tour golf pretty well.

An event opposite a designated event is a great idea and of course, not new.  Still harkens back to the days of WGCs in many ways, but it's a balance.  At least the Tour is getting events lined up so that opportunities are still there that week for those not in the designated event.

LOL, who said what they currently have is "to [sic] much"?  I was referring to "enough".  You said "its [sic] not like the carolina's [sic] don't [sic] have enough tournaments as is" suggesting the additional tournament would be too much in your opinion.

You wrote it, didn't seem any other way to interpret it, happy to hear if it wasn't meant that way.

it was meant to imply that any sponsor complaining about an opposite field tournament has plenty of options in the carolinas

Exactly. Just look at the amount of players that the Carolina’s produce for the tour.  I’d say 3 each isn’t too many.  It’s crazy how many come form here. The only other hotbeds that exceed are Southern California and Florida.  But you have to vet the Floridians. 2/3 are transfers from here or California.

Also pretty crazy how many people they've gotten out the two events at Congaree. It's in the middle of nowhere - probably an hour+ outside of Savannah and maybe a little closer to HHI/Bluffton, but there were great crowds out there. Heritage is always pretty packed too.

Obviously this one won't have the big dogs out there playing, but I think they'll manage a solid turnout.
