On course: KVC free drop then ball found. What to do.

Hey, I’m on the course. 
 

Player hits ball toward NPZ-GUR. Searches for 3 minutes, doesn’t find it, takes a free drop at PLC. 
 

After the drop the player sees the OG ball in play 6 feet behind the drop. 
 

What to do?

 

Play the dropped ball as it lies? Play the OG ball? Or correct the drop with the dropped ball? Or something else?

If there was KVC that the original was in the GUR-NPZ, then he has proceeded correctly and must continue with the dropped ball.  Playing the original ball at that point would have been playing a wrong ball (three minutes search had elapsed).

Even with the “new information” finding the first ball outside the NPZ, no need to adjust the location of the drop?

You had KVC that the ball was in the GUR/NPZ.  You estimated the spot where the ball last crossed the boundary of the GUR, used that to determine the Nearest Point of Complete Relief from the GUR, and dropped in the correct Relief Area.  As I read the rules about correcting a mistaken drop location, the only reason to re-drop is if you find new evidence that you've selected an incorrect Reference Point, i.e. that the ball crossed the boundary in a different spot.  Finding the ball outside of the GUR doesn't change the originally estimated location.

See 17.1d(3)/2. My lay out: you proceeded correctly with the lost ball, dropping a ball into play under the appropriate rule, then new information arrived before it was played - the original ball (now a wrong ball) was discovered. IF the original was found in the NPZ/ACC AND it suggested your estimate of point of last crossing was incorrect, you must lift and re-drop  IF the original was found outside the NPZ, you play the dropped ball as it lies.

Yes.  NPZ can be in either GUR or penalty area.  Playing from a NPZ is playing from a wrong place and involves a penalty.
