Getting shallower, but still unable to harness Monte's superpowers (aka power shift still missing)

I've been working on a combo of NTC and Power shift.  My downswing is shallower, I am attempting to get my right hip back and then towards the target in the backswing. I still cant seem to integrate the ideas of Power Shift into my downswing. It seems like I get to the top of my backswing, I think "cast to 8 o'clock" and try to increase left knee bend without firing the right hip. But I just seem to straighten my legs. I used the large ball to help show that my low point is behind the ball still, and also I cant seem to stop the out to in club path, even with the more shallow swing.

Where's the front view?   Trail leg is over rotated and locked out too much & flex loss, not a good place to be.  How do you expect to increase flex in lead knee from how you are at the top propped on top of a straight leg.    Until you know how legs and pelvis work you'll come out of the shot.

I swung out from underneath myself, from the lower part of my body.   Byron Nelson

Gonna be tough to do what you are trying to do from here:

The center of your pelvis has probably moved 2-3" toward the golf ball (and your head has pulled back some) as well.

Standup in a semi-athletic position and touch your tailbone.

take note of its orientation.

Pivot back and forth. Do you feel like you’re loading and unloading? IE do you feel like you need to put less effort into pivoting  forward as you are into pivoting backwards?

If you don’t feel “loading” I’ll bet that your tailbone is turning in the same direction as your upper body.

try turning/bracing your tailbone in the direction OPPOSITE your pivot. The result should be a feeling of springiness/loading.

Now please don’t take this movement straight into the swing because you want the golf swing to be driven by the core muscles so please don’t torque your back doing this

Check out the slow-motions

see how his upper body is “cranking”/ “coiling”  and that it seems to move back/around a few more segments for each amount his pelvis rotates back?

There needs to be something firm that braces and resists the backswing or else coil never develops. The easiest way to do this with minimal tension (b/c tension bad) is to move part of your body in the opposite direction.

You’ll find this also helps you pivot more? It’s paradoxical I know but golf is full of those. Right now you’re turning your whole body back and forth as a unit - that’s really difficult to develop speed with because your muscles need something to pull on.

hope this helps!

I know this is forever ago, but I've been drilling a lot of Monte's stuff and I had the same issue as OP (locking out trail leg too much, whenever I felt "keep flex" id launch one about 10% faster than my prior ones, but it never clicked, I try not to be too internally focused when playing)

But sort of counter rotating the lower body really kept that flex without thinking. Feels like I'm giving my upper body the head start now (like Jerry in the Seinfeld episode, my lower body is his high school nemesis, upper body is Jerry starting right before the starter fires the gun), and everything else sort of clicks.

I have what seems like a related issue. I don't fully straighten my trail leg in the backswing, but in the downswing, my tendency is for the trail hip to stay high, with my trail knee maintaining pretty much the same flex as at the top of the backswing. It corresponds with lifting my right heel.

I need to find a video with a drill or something to get the feeling right, because I struggle to consciously avoid doing this.

You’ve been given several videos as well as some really good feedback from valtiel that address the why already. Not to mention you’ve been watching. AMG videos in the past that deal with all this.

It’s being able to take that info and correct digest it and then turn it into a swing movement. Not many can do that and working with an instructor especially one on person is a better option so that they can help you get into better positions and move you around so that you feel it

True, and I regularly review the valtiel post in particular. I've now retrieved the AMG video that had what I was looking for (at 12:12):

I was getting too focused on my hips, when the simple knee switch feeling is what does it.
