Why is Maverick McNealy so special?

Every year Callaway puts out a prototype club for this guy that most tour staff never use.  Why do they keep designing and sending this kid so many one-off clubs?  He hasn't won a single tour event in 4 years trying, his top finish in a major was T75 at the 2022 PGA and T46 at the Player's Championship in 2022.  I get it, it's really, really hard out there but his entire bag is one-off prototypes except for his fairway wood.  Even Rahm doesn't get this much special treatment and he's the face of Callaway at the moment. 

 

I'm sure I'm going to get some flak for this but he has custom blades, a one-off Toulon putter, a Paradym TD with only one weight in the back...none of his clubs are what you would even consider standard tour-issue let alone retail.

Just imagine how (relatively) bad he would be without that special help.

Maybe Rahm is happy with the stock.  It’s likely he is not interested in attempting to design one off clubs.

  If something they design for McNealy hits it could and would be offered to the other pros and if popular enough then to the general public.

 

Designers don’t really know how good a new design is until it is tour tested.

 

 Some pros like to fiddle like the rest of us.  So it’s not really special treatment.
 Unless of course you have knowledge that they turned down a Rahm or Xander request?

Mav lived on Pebble Beach as a child but was not able to play the course until his 16th birthday.  
 

He has suffered enough in life let him have his special one-off proto Callaway clubs.

It’s not that Rahm doesn’t get preferential treatment he’s very low maintenance when it comes to equipment, he keeps the same shafts and usually just swaps out the new driver/fairway wood heads. McNealy had a lot of hype coming out of Stanford and is one of those super analytical types so I guess Callaway is just trying to suit his needs in an attempt to get their return on investment.

Rahm definitely gets some preferential treatment. His putter had the correct insert the 1st time! 🤣

Mav just has some unique desires and has always been pretty particular about his clubs, even if that meant playing old stuff

 

Callaway just wants him out of his Nike irons

Best guess, most tour guys are not interested in putting prototype equipment into play when they are trying to make cuts, make sponsors happy and want to win.  IMO Mav is not that concerned about the aforementioned, and maybe he's an equipment club ho, like so many on Golfwrx.
