According to Jody Vasquez author of "Afternoons with Mr. Hogan" Hogan told him "the secret is the correct functioning of the right leg, maintaining the angle of the right knee on the back and forward swings". Mister Hogan told him you can go at it hard or easy with the right leg maintaining this angle to hit the shot you want. That's why Hogan could be at 150 and hit a 6,7,8 and each iron would be all with in 10ft. Jody shagged balls for Mister Hogan at Shady Oaks when he was retired for 4 years. Jody became quite an accomplished am in Texas.  All "secrets" aside this is one of my all time favorite books and strongly recommend it.

When you say Hogan would swing around, you don't mean that literally, right? We all know about the arm swing illusion here - in other words, the arms look like they swing around the body, but actually they stay in front of the pivot. Do you mean that Hogan was deeper than most pros now?

Remember Geoff Jones' protege, Matt Loving? Such a tragedy that he died so young, but what a swing.

This is the best view. It's all a** and hamstrings, no jumping. Back foot slides out onto toe, instead of back and in to toe like Scotty.

I love them both. I personally go out but I'm short on distance, so maybe in is better.

Still can't tell if the new guy is real or if he just made a bag with a new name. Why is it always the same initials every time?

I mean literally and yes, he was deeper than most of them today on tour for certain.  The upper arms and elbow lead through the forward swing....the lower right arm feels like it lags behind but it's really not behind but rather to the side until the change of direction from forward swing to follow through.  I will do a video on this subject.  The toughest thing to understand IMO about Hogan's move is the transition from forward swing to follow through and the change of direction that occurs just before impact.  Please be patient with me again...might take a couple days...very busy and I have a couple tournaments this coming week.  Don't let me forget!

Take your time, man, no rush--enjoying the conversation. One extra question: agree that Hogan has "less" lift of upper arms in backswing but they did get slung up and off the torso in the follow through, no?

I think arms swinging around has body has messed up so many golfers, that it's very dangerous advice indeed. Even Hogan's arms were in front of his torso in 3D. If I make a Hogan backswing, leave my arms where they are and turn my torso back, my arms are pretty much in the same position, albeit lower, as if I made a regular 'modern' backswing.

Life before death,

strength before weakness,

journey before destination.

In transition: right knee holds back, pelvis shifts--left hip leading left knee before it starts to add external rotation to the hip.

Follow through: Arms to the sky.

That's what I'm seeing.

Ok....This is for Dean and dpc and Virtuoso, please take a peek as well as this will help you understand where I am going with this swing from the side.

First, you guys gotta remember that when Hogan was playing, a LOT of things were different.  The clothing they wore was worn differently than folks do today.  Hogan had reasonably long arms but not ridiculously so.  I would submit that Hogan wore his pants high around his waste providing a slight illusion that he had "gorilla" arms.  The shortening of his torso because of the way he wore his pants, makes it look like he had a short torso and long arms.  Just food for thought there.  I have actually experimented with that as well and it indeed made me look like I had long arms as well.

Now, regarding the swing.  Yesterday, I made a post explaining a drill that I wanted you guys to consider.  I have attached a video I made for you and for my followers describing what I see as the key to the Hogan backswing and the key to his ability to so consistently strike the ball at a level here to fore not seen.  (lol, I always wanted to use that in a sentence after I saw Avengers Infinity Wars).  This is a simple drill but it explains so much and visually really hits home if you really want to swing the way he did.  So, here it is.  Note, that I have 32 inch arms....short and yet, look at the backswing position when it goes all the way back.  I'm telling you guys....it's not the long arms ....it's the mechanics.  For some, this is going to be an epiphany...for others, it may not make sense.  For me, it was certainly the former.  Good Luck!!

The video is long so I had to post a link to the YouTube channel to watch it.  There is a TON more coming guys, I am just starting to scratch the surface of what I want to share with everyone.

Hi Carey, nice video thank you.  I do think that you are wrong about Hogan adding loft at impact though.  He did setup with his arms and club forming a "Y" shape but at impact he was "y" with his lead arm in line with the clubshaft or slightly in front with shaft lean.  The irons that he was using had a fairly high center of gravity and there is no way to hit them well without some shaft lean.

Hey Fella's!!

Sorry I have been out of pocket for a while.  Been very busy opening our XGOLF and competing etc.  To catch you up, I have taken on the responsibility of Swing Coach for Omar Uresti, PGA.  There are other news items coming soon and I will try to keep you guys updated.  I have had one win and a couple top 5 finishes in tournament play.  I have also gotten closer to where I want to get with golf swing and have posted one swing for your review.

I have also posted my next lesson drop that discusses hand path with regard to a more modern "Arm Lift" golf swing vs a more classic "rotational" golf swing.  Both work great but it imperative that you hand path remains constant in each type of swing.  I have attempted to demonstrate both for your review.  Good Luck and I look forward to chatting!!

This hand path video is exactly what I needed right now. Great stuff, well communicated

Fella's!

I decided to drop one more video today about center face contact and how to get there.  Please pay particular attention to the plane of my arms and how this drill will help you with your ball striking.  This is an EXCELLENT drill for ball striking, rhythm, tempo and sequence.  Good Luck!!!

thank you, at first it wasn't working that well, toe misses, but minor adjustments for me, Stand a little taller than you and my down swing is more of a rotation, thrust of f the back leg, than what you call "screwing into the ground". I realize its all individual feels and I may be doing exactly what you describe but anyway its def a swing changer for me. so much appreciate you for providing the free videos.

Hey Carey,

I'd be interested on your thoughts on shaft weight. Obviously its golfer dependent but I think heavier shafts are much more playable because of being able to feel the head position throughout the swing.

I listened to Hank Haney and his people for years say that their hips are on a merry go round and their arms are on a Ferris wheel.   This is gonna sound silly but why the hell would anyone take their body parts in different directions to try and achieve impact together.....when they can just take everything the same direction to achieve impact together.  Just food for thought.

They are two distinct segments each having their own amount of range run out that merge late before the strike producing an opportunity to change direction, or arc bending, by then using everything we have in the battle against inertia.

Every golf swing you evaluate is an opportunity gained, every swing  you don't is an opportunity lost.     Knudson
