Have been over the years been interested in similar as the OP.  Especially since I find that the accomplishments of players of my age, born 1962-66 were remarkably poor, especially in the years pre-tiger, when we were 25-30 yo.. Vijay stands out, but he did not win much until 35. For some reason the players born before, Faldo, Couples, Norman won everything until Mickelson, Els, Stricker won.

Norman’s record not too bad . Still don’t care for him but Kudos. But then again my rankings of wins would give 1/2 points on non US or European wins.

A little bit harsh, there are plenty of PGA Tour stops that have relatively weak fields and there are plenty of Europeans events that had our Big 5 in the field and are considered classics. There was a time when we had a rival tour, before our players cheesed it across the pond for more than a handful of events.

 

At the end of the day you've got to beat the players that turn up and you don't have bad weeks and win. Yes, you get some wins where the winner seems a forgone conclusion, Padraig Harrington has won a handful of Irish PGAs, but three of them were in playoffs. You're going to get a handful playing top notch golf.

Chip I agree that European and that was what I was getting at . If it wasn’t a PGA tour or European Tour it gets weaker . Sorry my sentence structure wasn’t more exact.

Interesting to see those players on this list that include significant numbers of wins on both PGA and international. Especially Tiger, Els, Norman, and Garcia. World beaters. Not sure we will ever see similar distributions again due to the cash disparity.

Tiger won 18 WGC events and 15 majors. That’s 33 of his 41 credited European tour events. Normans total pales in comparison considering it was top heavy with Australasian events won.

Best of the 80s?

 

Great question. For me, Watson at the start of the decade, Seve the banner man in the mid '80s, and Norman was the box office man in the latter half of the decade.

Only 5 Americans...

 

Note that I choose this birthdate as it primarily includes player wins post the PGA Tour breakaway from the PGA of America (1969 first season) and post creation of the PGA European Tour by the PGA (British) (1972 first season).  I'll arbitrarily call it the "modern-era" that sees the graphite shaft and metal wood take over the professional game.  Norman was born 1955.

Thanks for that. I agree it was a strong Euro contingent at the time.  I’m still of the belief that the high win totals were more due to lack of depth on the Euro tour…much like the 30’s to the 70’s on the US tour.  Oddly enough most of them fared much better in majors than in PGA Tour events.
