I can’t see the attachment, but the first comment raises the question:

Do Tour pros still value hitting the ball before the ground and/or divots in front of the ball? Has the game changed with equipment?  I wonder sometimes watching the game on tv.

Try hitting the ground before the ball and get back to me.

Unless every shot is from a greenside bunker, you're going to have a long day...

I didn’t suggest that was proper, only that watching the guys play on TV I see sometimes what appears to be pretty simultaneous contact with the ball and ground.  I also see sometimes several guys chunk it (like at the Masters one year) from which one might infer that their ability to strike the ball cleanly is not what it might be. I’m wondering if newer clubs allow them to get away with less clean strikes than in the past and in general whether the future of golf may be different from its past, that is whether new clubs have obviated some of the need for the skill in this area than might have been needed in the past.

fairway lies ball then turf matters on all iron shots as much now as in the past. with wedges in fairway lies using the bounce is a fairly modern approach and that obviously requires the club to hit the ground before the ball. tigers practice started with pitches and it did appear he was striking ball then turf old school.

the video is of tiger making a straight line of divots starting with pitches going all the way to driver off a short tee. the first comment is in regards to a taylor made youtube video where tiger mentions he only brushes the ground when he's flushing it.

This information is neither obvious or common knowledge as I can attest to when I mention it in threads about bounce.  Most think that you are supposed to hit the ball first while the bounce on the club is engaged, which would basically render the sole configuration and bounce useless because the ball would have left the club face before the sole touched the ground. But I digress,  you are a unicorn by even mentioning this @jimecherry!!!

‘Can’t repeat the past?’ he cried incredulously. ‘Why of course you can!’

He looked around him wildly, as if the past were lurking here in the shadow of his house, just out of reach of his hand.”

Wide soled irons definitely make some contact interesting.  One noticed alot of long irons picked so clean there’s no ground disturbance

Thing is. Ranges are usually just overseed.  And wet.  ( because they have to water them ).  Bermuda fairways are different.  They’re hard.  And drier.  So same swing will make difference in divot result.  He’s probably saying on the course he’s not taking large ones.  If he’s on.  But on the range there’s no way to not.  It’s soft sand and almost no real grass .  You’re going to disturb dirt.  Compare his range pattern to others. He’s very shallow vs others.
