Reshaft P-790s

Hi All,

 

My 12 yr-old son is hitting P790's 5i-PW with an Adila 45g ladies shaft.  I think he could move up.  I am thinking the Fujikura Speeder NX Red IR(50g; A Flex). Do you think this is an appropriate change or is there another option?  Also, where is the best place to get these reshafted?

 

He's about 5ft tall, Driver swing speed is 80mph.

Its funny you say that bc I just have this sense that he would prefer a stiffer shaft.  Our issue is that he is a lefty junior so there aren't alot of sample shafts to hit at a fitter.  I ordered A flex for his wedges.  but might go R flex for Irons in the winter.

 

Can you share any details to lead you to say R flex?

I know its a predictable reply, but go get fit if you are able.  He is tall enough.  My 12 YO also in a 45 gram shaft (A - tipped .5") and in need of an upgrade.  Anyhow, you may consider the minimal difference going from L to A flex.   Remember also that there is no standard on flex  - all "L" or "A" flex's are not equal.    Also 45 to 50 grams will be marginal...if anything on weight.  Well worth the $100 bucks max to go to get fit.   You'll get mixed reviews on Club Champion, but I've found them hard to beat when it comes to shaft option variety.     We'll be going in a few weeks and my guess is he'll be moving form A graphite tipped to a Regular or possibly stiff steel in the 80-90 g range.    If your son still needs to be in lighter shafts, consider the Zelo's line.  My son has Zelos 7 in his wedges....were great for the last year, but starting to prove to soft for him at this point so likely will match whatever he gets in his new iron shafts next go around.     FWIW, he does have fujikura vista pro 45 A in his irons, they've been a good match for his T200 irons (2* weak).

Just bought a used Stealth with an air speeder 45 shaft with R flex.  i should get a sense if he likes the R flex  from that.

My daughter has gone through several sets of Recoil shafts and they were always good. I would look at some of their shafts first. Her current T200 irons have Accra shafts and they have been great as well. I would definitely look at them as well but you need to see a fitter for them

Just looking at what u posted … hard to say without knowing how he loads.

My wife (14 index) recently went from "A" 65g graphite down to "A" 45g graphite.  She tried ladies flex but it's too soft.  There's a noticeable difference in flex, between L and A flex.  Can't imagine him or anyone noticing five gram weight difference.  I am a low cap attention to detail feel player and have MMT 105s in my 620MB irons, and had MMT 95g in new T100s, and couldn't feel the 10g difference.  

 

I agree with others, take him to a fitter and can't image he's ready for "S".

 

Please, ask your son if he wants to change shafts.  The problem with Dads, they are the reason kids and wives equally lose interest in golf.  My 14 yr old niece plays on the boys HS golf team and plays in regional kids events.  A few years back I had a sit-down with her parents; they needed to chill and let her ASK for...

Get your son fit.  I have 3 boys that all play/played competitive junior golf.  They were using lightweight steel shafts in R at age 12.  TT 95 XP and the like.  Went with steel for better consistency and tighter dispersion.
