Make Players Championship the 5th Major - B. Chamblee

Duct Tape

Recommended Posts

It should be just four majors but I would like to see the following changes

Masters: No changes

PGA: every 5 to 7 years the tournament goes abroad to Asia or Mainland Europe ...

US Open: Once every ten years, there should be a Muni Open, an event at a real public access golf course

Open: every 5 to 7 years, they play a 'links' course outside the British Isles

The Players should be something like a World Championship or Super Bowl of Golf

Would love to see the main stretch of the Tour be in Jan to Early March with 8 events of the best 125 players in the world with the last event being a The Players

Could still have a tour during the summer but these events build up to the Majors

Leave it alone.

Brooks got onto a pretty short list by winning his 5th major. Anyone beyond that are the greatest players ever.

That changes when guys get another chance every year.

Brandel was on his soapbox about this Thursday on the "Live at the Open" show, before he published his opinion piece.  It was very much during a discussion about how the PGAT players should "protect" themselves from those terrible outside players (LIV) and create a fifth major so they could exclude others.

I forget who he was arguing with, but the other guy kept laughing politely, trying to disagree.  But once Brandel gets up on his soapbox, he goes all-in.

Four, five or six are all arbitrary numbers. What makes a tournament a major isn’t a label, its the prestige that comes from winning it. I think the Players is as prestigious a victory as the other four tournaments that have become labeled as majors.

the bigger question to me is why isn’t the US Amateur? I’m of the opinion that it’s as prestigious as any tournament that exists.

I would only entertain the Players as a major if it rotated at different courses around the world, and maybe the PIF/TOUR merger could help facilitate it with a rotation at Sawgrass, a Saudi course, and then 2 or 3 others elsewhere.

The Masters should be the only one that’s at the same course.

I'm not for any major being added that is always played at the same course. Having one major be played at the same course every year is enough. We already see the same courses rotated between the PGA and US Open too often in my opinion. I'm glad the rota for the Open has changed a little bit. No need to have the Players become a major. They already talk about it above the other normal tour events. That is enough of a distinguishing characteristic to make me happy.

If you need a 5th major make it either the Australian or Canadian or even a Japan Open. The Players is a great tournament but we don’t need another major in the USA.

4 majors is perfect and keeps it in touch with the records of recent history. Who cares if someone gets to 14 or 15 majors when they have 5 majors a year when compared to Nicklaus or Woods? There will always been an asterisk on that sort of achievement.

However, I'm not a big fan of the PGA being in May. The gap of mid-July to April is too long without a major for my liking. I miss the August date for the PGA - the WGC at Bridgestone followed by the PGA to look forward to after the Open was always appealing. PGA comes too close after the Masters and just feels stuck in the middle of the calendar.

The PGA was moved because the PGA Tour tried to make their Tour Championship relevant and the PGA Championship in August was more important to the players than those first two meaningless events leading up to (at least for the top 25 or so) East Lake.  May fits the overall schedule better but the PGA Championship in August was definitely a better spot for it for the fans of the game.

As a fan I hate it in May.  It had an identity as glory’s last shot. Now it’s just lost in the middle.  Good for the tour but bad for fans.

I think that the idea of 4 goes back to Bobby Jones and his great year of 1930.  Arguably, that was back in an era when there were many amateurs who could compete with pros.  I mention John Ball and Harold Hilton, who both won the Open Championship.  Jerry Travers and Francis Ouimet were well respected in the US; Cyril Tolley and Roger Weathered in the UK.

As the money increased in pro golf, the best amateurs turned pro.  Bob Drum invented the modern slam for Arnold Palmer, who decided to play the Open Championship beginning in 1960.
