Recommended Posts

Evening guys,

Booked our 4some for Streamsong next June. Never been there - any tips, where to fly in, etc would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

There really isn’t anything you need to know. You can’t leave because there isn’t anything close. Streamsong has everything you need on site. Make reservations for dinner just in case. Don’t be out there playing when the sun goes down. I thought that was a joke and it’s not. It’s terrible. Enjoy the black course and everything it has to offer. Buy something in the proshop if you want it because their website doesn’t get updated enough.

I’ve said it in the other streamsong thread but my biggest piece of advice:

never, ever let a waiter or bartender go without placing your order. If they say - “do you need a minute to look at the menu?” The answer is no. When they drop off your drinks, consider going ahead and ordering round two right then and there.

If you don’t follow this strategy you may not see them again for a half an hour.

You'll probably need to fly into Tampa. If you fly into Orlando, Sarasota, Fort Myers or Punta Gorda you'll be driving further.

I stayed there last summer. Awesome place. They have restaurants there, but I found ordering from the bar was great too. Awesome pool with a bar outside.

Get more than "1" taco at the taco hut when you make the turn, they are awesome! I found the caddy was not too good, guessed at yardages and was fairly lazy for what he was paid with tips. They only have carts available in the summer months.

Tampa is most convenient airport.  Buy a bunch of snacks/drinks before you get there.  June will be hot as balls.   Get a stick of Glide or a pallet of Gold Bond.  Drink a bottled water every other hole. You won't pee the entire round.  I am dead serious.

Don't read too many blogs/threads on Streamsong.  It gets lots of hate for some reason.  I think the golf is great.  The lodging/dining facility is weird.  Red was my least favorite of the 3.

Tampa or Orlando and rent a car.  I have done both the drive isnt terrible either way.  Good advice on pre-shopping for anything you might want from a snack and beverage standpoint.  Rooms have mini fridges.  Food isnt too bad on site, but not as elite as the golf.  Black is my favorite course there.  Didnt really take over the top spot until my 5th or 6th time playing it.  That is why I recommend to play it at least twice while you are there, and if you can stand the heat in june back to back is a blast, as you learn so much on the first round.  Played it most recently in May as a solo (course was closed in the morning for maintinence) and was the only person on the course.  One of the best golf experiences ever (a tad hot for walking but not a problem).  Red is fantastic and challenging.  Blue has its moments, but feels the most like every other course in the world.  Still a great course.  My caddie experience has been mixed there (as with most places).  I dont use one now that Im familiar with all the courses.  If I had 10 rounds to play at SS I would allocate:  5 black 4 Red 1 Blue

Wow red was your least favorite? I’m black red blue. Just curious your opinion on red

I played Sand Valley and Red within a year of each other.  They are essentially the exact same course.  I found them to be very bland and repetitive.

I think I like Blue because I played well that round.  I thought Black was cool but only got one round there.  Had fun and wanted to play more.

My 10 round at Steamsong would be 4 Black / 4 Red / 2 Blue.

My recommendation would be go off early as possible and then play 36.  There is nothing else to do there and its nice to beat some of the heat and hopefully play at a decent pace (pace can get real bad especially at Black)

Drink plenty of water / gatorade

What is the water situation on the course? Does the course have buckets every few holes to fill up? I see everyone recommending drinking whole bottle every other hole? Pretty sure the caddies dont want to carry 8 waters on the course but i wanted to check.

Our trip is in September and just looking for other recommendations as well.

Very frequent. Coolers every 3 or 4 holes, a halfway house that you hit twice on most courses, and a spot on the back on each that the cart girl usually parks at that you hit once or twice as well

The last time I made it there was June 2015.....it is incredible that the identical service issues I experienced are still a problem.  😞  I didn't love the hotel / food / bar -- it was some basic service issues as mentioned above and stratospheric prices for what it is.  They kind of have you by the balls though -- where else are you going to stay and eat?

I absolutely loved the golf courses (only 2 when I was there.)  The golf is fantastic.  Pace yourself.  Second the recommendation of some nut butter or gold bond or whatever....strong call.  Water bottles were on every other tee box when I was there.  I drank water non stop and felt great despite this:

I had hoped with Kemper taking over that would lead to improvements but still sounds very hit or miss.

I think it’s just hard to recruit/retain good staff in that location.

It worries me though because despite amazing golf courses (and being very convenient for me to get to ha) - the experience falls so far below the level of the other premium US resorts.

Curious to recommend tips for Forecaddie with carts? I see its $45 per player if they do a decent job is 20% of $45 respectable? I've never had a forecaddie before only a double bag caddie.

If your question is:  Is a $9 dollar tip plus the 45 per player already paid a good tip?  The answer is no.  If the guy was a good caddie and busted his tail for me all day a respectable tip would be at least a $20.  If he gets all of the 45 plus 4 20 dollar tips he is going home with about $250 for a days work.  Not minimum wage, but not enough to put up with all the stuff caddies have to put up with.

Best advice I can give after two trips is skip the other restaraunts and just eat at red course clubhouse bar.  Service is usually terrible, and pricing is insane for higher end food options.  Italian place was OK, rest was barely worth the wait for price.  Golf is awesome, and rooms are great.

I like the fish sandwich at black, the burger we got at Red was awful.

While I've been playing at Streamsong since they opened, this past weekend was the first time I've stayed overnight. We booked a sunrise double queen and we thought the room was absolutely fantastic. Plenty of room to stretch out, have some drinks and relax. Bathrooms were excellent, and everything was very clean. Hotel lobby has great style.

We only ate at two places: Pub 59 and Bone Valley Tavern. The food at Pub 59 was typical pub food quality, but the food at Bone Valley Tavern was excellent. I was also bracing myself for crazy food prices so I actually thought the quality and what you got was a great value. Drink prices weren't insane either, I think it was $13 or $14 for an old fashioned and $7 for a pint of beer.

The golf courses were in great shape, with the Black having been aerated most recently a month prior but barely showing any signs of it. If you're playing in the summer you need to be prepared for the heat and the sun. There's half bottles of water every three holes, so I stick with the 'drink one, take one' method of hydration at each one. I also grab a sports drink at each turnstand, which is where they sortof get you on the prices. I also have a lot of success with sun-sleeves on the arms and sunscreen on the neck and legs. This was also the first time I ever played with sunglasses and found it to be a great success. The amount of sand out there coupled with the blazing sun can make your retinas feel like they're melting without them.

Yeah I was lucky enough to receive this same advice. I went into it knowing the food wasn’t going to be great. So don’t expect these great meals to end the night.

I'm heading there at the end of this month. I was told to fly into Tampa because you don't have to fight the traffic leaving Orlando.

Hey, I just took Orlando and had no problems at all. Just got back last night as well, if you have any questions feel free to ask.
