Hybrid shaft - stiff butt & mid, softer tip? Any recommendations (Modus 130 profile)

Just use modus 130. They are flexed by weight (~5g increments), so go down in “flex” to get a lighter shaft, and then hard step 2x or 3x to get the feel you are looking for.

so, assuming you have modus 130s in irons, for a 4h use a Modus 130r 6i shaft.

You can also use a stiff butt shaft that you like the feel of, hzrdus black as a random example, and put it in untipped. You’ll get more parallel tip section and with the head that is “heavier” than the tipping recommendation you’ll get more tip deflection and feel.

Sorry but that's not going to work.  With const weight shafts, hard stepping increases the weight.

So while yes, going from X to S will drop 5 gm.   Hard stepping the stiff flex x2 will increase the weight by ~3.1 gm for a net loss of less than 2 gm.   Not even noticeable by most.   Hard step 3x and you're actually back at the same weight you were with the x-flex shaft.

That is a good point!

Frankly you wouldn't need to hard step - you want the shaft to deflect more, so the lighter shaft straight in would be fine... I've found that most people get defensive when you start telling them to put a 'regular' flex shaft in a club when they 'should' be in a 'stiff' or 'X'. I guess you would need a larger weight differential to make it work in that fashion, or a single HS (or hell you could play with a Tiger Step if you're really getting funny with it).

These things often get over-thought!

Haven't seen any data for the PX LS - so can't say.

Yes.  There is usually very little distinction between the feel from the butt and middle.  They usually get combined into a single feel for most players.   So when both are above average - it accentuates that feel even more.

Yes. Although there are shafts that have a noticeably softer handle than middle and tip, and those I definitely feel the distinction. Eg. 'Ahina X and C-Taper 130.

Even the LS, compared to *other* PX models, has noticeable 'give' at the grip end. Not unpleasant. But also a very 'springy' shaft. I get unintentional flyers. Not so w/ X7.

I've had better luck going lighter and WAY stiffer in longer clubs. TX as a rule once I get to graphite. Although I have used a similar trick to yours in 3W - use X but over-tip it. That stabilizes the tip section, but gives me a nice firm middle with a touch more torque than typical TX to hit draws with. YMMV.

Love the stability, launch and spin of the modus 130x in 7-4 irons.  8-pw all tend to launch too high which leads to a  bunch up in distances for my swing.  My on course swing speed with an 8 iron is 92-95 and I just don’t think that’s enough to need the x anymore.

Short irons go too high AND too long? So why not HS 8 thru P? I think your SS is plenty.

The bunching occurs in x flex.    My pw and 9 both go about 140-150 (short and apex real high).  The 8 goes about 155-160 and then 7 hits about 175 and normal 12 yard gapping up from there.

With the stiff flex I don’t have that problem.

Interesting. I used to have the same issue with softer flexes. (Particularly Rifle 7.0. my GW carried 150. Same as PW. Not much less than 9i. Then normal.)

For me, the solution was actually going stiffer. X7 gives me perfect gaps.

I wonder if there's something about the M3 profile that's giving you extra distance in the shorter clubs. My guess would be extra head weight triggering more 'whip?'

But not sure why it wouldn't be worse in Stiff. (Unless the profiles were radically different. Did Stuart mention something about that?)

I think it’s cause I don’t feel the xstiff short irons load.  When I don’t feel them load, I tend to flip.

I like the x7 profile.  It’s really tough to play 3/4 over length and get the swing weight d5 or lower.

Feel you. Same here on short irons. So I SS the X7s to fell 8/9/P load. Ctaper130s feel good straight in, to me.

Lead tape, of course, helps with loading but hurts w SW.

Wouldn't a heavier shaft give you lower swing weight? Or a heavier grip?

I think a heavier grip can trick the swing weight scale, but total weight starts to go up too.

I’m good with the stiff iron shafts, they are handling everything I can throw at them.

the aldila hybrid shaft should be here Friday.  Still looking for a bargain on iz 🙂

That's not easy to answer.  The stiff flex version has a very unique profile (assuming the data I've seen is accurate).   It has a tip that starts out very stiff but softens up just at the very end.  So one part of the tip is stiffer then most others of the same flex - but another part is on the softer side.   Or another way to look at it is that it has a softer section that's much smaller than more typical softer tip designs.   Very hard to predict how that will translate into a feel (or performance) relative to another shaft.

I currently have a war going on between a Modus 130 S, Modus 125 R, and SPB S all are in Miz JPX 825 just different heads, 7-8-PW.  Interesting that I naturally hit the 130 S (8i) and SPB S (PW) the best.  Not like I hit the 7i poorly but contact is the least centered.  I focus on headweight spread first vs. actual SW, but I will add a bit of lead tape to the 7i and see what happens.  I went in thinking the 125 would suit me the best and from memory had thought the closest to the SPB was the 125 so that is a bit of a surprise. I do not find the 130 S to be overly stiff and I'm not behemoth!

Based on the numbers I've seen the SPB is near the middle between the two but actually closer to the 130 - in the butt an middle.  And it's very similar in the tip to the 130 (virtually the same).

But for the same flex, the 125 softest in the mid/butt - but stiffer than the other two in the tip.  Obviously dropping down to R in the 125 is going to make an even bigger difference in how soft it is relative to the other two in the butt/mid region - hard to say about the tip I haven't seen specific numbers for the R.

I play the modus 130 stiff and have played it in x.

I’ve demoed the 125 in x and it felt much softer to me with a lot more flex. I would think x in 125 is closer to 130 stiff, with the R flex 125 being much softer in flex.

I play Modus 130 stiff in irons and gap wedge, love the shaft. Feel, ball flight, spin, it's just great for me.

I haven't found anything exactly similar in hybrids. I like some of the other suggestions like KBS Tour Proto, Tensei Pro Blue, etc. You're going to want something pretty stiff. My personal favorite that I haven't seen mentioned is the Diamana Thump Hybrid.

Interesting, they feel quite different to me. SPB X feels much more stable, esp through the tip. Quite a sturdy shaft. M3 130X plays a little softer and flimsier - again, just for me.

Looking for a hybrid shaft with a similar profile in the 85-95 gram range.  Club speed with with hybrid is 105.  Currently playing a stock 85 gram Rdx black in my tsr3.

Curious if you ever found your match? I am similar, play modus 130s/130x in irons and like the stiff butt/mid with softer tip profile.. the tip deflection helps me launch the ball despite low dynamic loft. Wondering if you every found what you were looking for in hybrids, Tzsix is on my radar

I’ve worked in my swing a bit.  The gd iz was a good option at that time and still works.

Now I’m using a ventus black in my 19 utility iron and a d limited 90 in my 19 utility wood.
