Old Ping Putters

Recommended Posts

Finished the extension trimming and regripping on the n-echo today. Feels awesome now and it looks great at address. Like my Pal I want to feel more weight when I take it back.  Also as you can see someone reshafted this at some point..

Love the My Day, so did Brad Faxon. Karsten didn't know what to call his new design. His daughter took one of his prototypes out for a spin. When she gave it back to her dad she remarked that putter made my day.

Here's one of the first batch.

My boyfriend’s dad used this for years. He doesn’t play anymore since he’s 84 (that’s another story). He gave his MyDay to my bf. He uses it once in a while, but he will keep it as a will be a fond memory of his dad and his love of golf.

Can anyone help pin down the year of this AYD?20240201_185812.jpg.8b558fc856b2587e7906c5cbb90b070a.jpg

I bought it "blind" as the pictures were not clear. I hoped it might be a '60's 85029 as that is what I collect in terms of Ping.

Tell tale features are the grip, shaft label and KARSTEN stamp which makes me think '80's? Zips and Pheonix markings are all but indistinguishable!20240201_185731.jpg.e8f1b2fc236665179514915e26309a2a.jpg20240201_185743.jpg.6cc007dd97cffbcfebb1efa264a822f3.jpg20240201_185707.jpg.0429fc770e815f57b5349b8931c1baef.jpg20240201_190201.jpg.f36efa1c3e6c92142e6b59eb0f597f97.jpg

Cool feature is an original label on the grip. Very faint but it reads;"This tarnished Ping putter is made from heat treated Manganese Bronze four times tougher than brass. Turns uniform dark (glare resistant) xxxx days use".20240201_185530.jpg.5c9211eb7a158d72fe1e849648aa7327.jpg

Guess it has never been played albeit showing plenty of signs of age!

One observation on earlier posts, I am pretty sure the registered trade mark symbol appeared in 1967 - I must check back Karsten book to confirm but I do have '60's 85029 zips with the trade mark and a couple without so I believe it came in during that tight 66/67 period?

I'm a bit confused....there are 2 different pictures of grips & shafts - which applies to the clubhead you're asking about?

@Foozle the reason I ask is that I have an AYD putter, shaft band is worn down to silverish, the grip has the Ping putter man as yours does but no label.
The inside says "Karsten Mfg Co" w/zip of 85020 - since that zip began in '68 (I've been told) yours could still be in that '60s era...

Thanks. Karsten Mfg Co was adopted around 1967 - same time as I believe the trade mark symbol came in. KARSTEN as shown on my one I believe came in during the '80's. I cannot make out the Zip code to get any further help.

Just a bit confused as I didn't think they still made the AYD that late although I know they reproduced some earlier models....

Always a bit of a minefield trying to date Ping putters!

I think the "minefield" might lie in that Karsten used the  85029 in the '60s AND is now using the same zipcode again. Odell Trueblood drew me a diagram of Ping zipcodes on the putters...I've lost that piece of paper. As best as I remember, zipcodes that are on the bottom are the earlier models & zipcodes that are on the right side are the later models....

From what I remember the AYD was introduced in the early 70s along with the Zing and My Day.  Yours has what looks like an old head, a 70s/80s shaftband and a 90s grip!  So my guess would be it was an old stock head (impossible to date except to say it would have been mfd in the 70s or 80s) which was assembled/sold in the early 90s.

I agree this was a good review....tho, I gotta admit I stopped following his YT channel a bit ago - I don't consider 15year or so old clubs to be vintage (his early reviews are much better at following vintage clubs) & sometimes his history leaves alot to be desired (his post on the Golfsmith NCC-1701 putter is way off base at to history)....to each is own. I do occassionaly check his channel to see what he's up to.

Yeah I prefer pre 2000 reviews, but respect his passion for golf.

Also to each their own, I dont want to restore old Ping Putters at all. I find the end result "worse" looking to my eye..

I agree - I am not responsible for the "restoration". Obviously folk ideally want the OG shaft, band and grip and a dark head, but IMO the head is still very nice (I'm considering leaving it outside with the grip and shaft protected to reoxidise and darken the MgBrz). Thankfully it wasn't shined up too much.

I emailed Ping with photos and the historian Rob (great guy) said that Karsten called the little dots/imperfections you see on early castings like this one "birthmarks" 🙂

@ColinKelvin Your "restored" putter pictured above reminds me of the Scottsdale Anser "remake" (circa 1994-95 i think?) that i bought 2nd-hand recently, as a gamer

(albeit i'm guessing yours = way more coveted amongst Ping collectors!?)

Would you (or others here) have any insights on the 1994-95 remake w.r.t. weight, desirability etc?

I saw a nice post from @RobotDoctor that mentioned the units for the Remake ie approx 20k flat-soled made, and another 10k rocker sole.

The remakes with PING in large lettering in the cavity like the one pictured in your old thread were released in MgBrz, BeCu and BeNi (usually without a sight line).  Ping never released official weight info but my guess would be the former is 315g or so and the latter two maybe 330.  There was also the 1995 anniversary Scottsdale Anser remake with the big leather cover and hosel serial, and "Ping Golf Clubs Scottsdale Anser" in the cavity, again probably quite a light head.  None of these remakes are rare because Ping produced them in fairly high numbers so you can usually find any of them used for around $100 for the MgBrz ones, and a little more for the nickel and copper ones.  They are great putters, obviously!

Here's my 1973 Ping Pal that I cleaned up, partially restored, and Golf Galaxy did the rest with putting a new Pingman PP58 grip on it, cleaning up the shaft a little more, etc...

Someway, someway, this 50 year old putter still sinks putts! 😎😍

Mr. Clean is right, nice collection. How do you like the 5bz in nickel? I have a Zing5 and a Zing 5bz and I really like having the clear view of the ball at address - but both of mine are in stainless and I am curious about the difference in feel.

Looks like one of the 90s tribute Scottsdale Ansers they put out - it was a “limited run” but there were at least a few thousand - if that’s what it is In MagBronze and polished carefully.

On second look - probably an original anser - search for Ping zip codes and it’ll get you a time frame.
