Time for new irons?

Wondering if there is that much to gain from new irons from a tech perspective with irons that are on their 6th season (original Cobra Forged Tec Black). Of course, I don't need new irons, but I've been spending too much time reading around wrx lately. Admittedly, I have been wanting new irons for a couple years now but haven't been able to talk myself into it yet.

 

I'm currently a 7hcp. Putting is the weakest part of my game. Decent ball striker with my irons. My common miss is on the toe.

 

I used to be a huge Mizzy fan and have owned several sets, so the 223/225's have intrigued me, as have the Edel SRS Pros and i230's. The Pings and Edel's attract me since they tend to be more forgiving on toe strikes. That being said, are new irons that much better than my OG Cobra FTBs to justify a new buy? If so, what others might you consider?

I keep looking at the ZX7's, but don't see much advantage from my current set. But these are clubs in the same category...

In my personal experience, 7 years tends to be the sweet spot between technology advances and justifying buying new irons. That being said, I'm not entirely sure how much more they can KEEP improving irons so that window may grow.

 

You and I have VERY similar games. I'm a 5 hcp. Irons are my strong suit and I also have a toe miss with putting being the worst part of my game.

 

I've played the Ping i210s for about 4 years now and absolutely love them. Everything I've read about the i230s is they're an improvement on the 210s.

They do, but my grooves are still in decent shape.

The Forged Tec is a player’s distance model that substantially trades spin and height for distance. As you’re playing X shafts, the appearance is that you don’t need the added distance, and are giving up spin/accuracy/stopping power unnecessarily.

 

The standard suspects would likely be the classic i210/230, ZX5, P770 straight or with P7MC, T100S, etc.

Go hit the Srixon ZX5/ZX7 Mark II's. Hard to beat the value-to-performance of these amazing irons. Only Miura to me feels softer.

That's a great point. Distance is not an issue and my goal is to have tighter dispersion with more traditional lofts.

If your miss is on the toe, I would avoid the 620CB. I found them to be particularly harsh and penalizing on toe strikes -- worse than some blades I have played (like MP33)

 

You are much better off with something like a T100, ZX7 or another iron with tungsten in the toe to mitigate that miss.

I don’t think there are any technological improvements in iron heads. If you want to buy it just because then go for it.

Agreed on an iron with tungsten in the toe.   Ping i230 and ZX7 would be on my shortlist.  You can find some great really great deals on ZX7 MK1 out there.

Cobra tours. I’ll talk to a wall and tell them how great they are. I liked them better than the srixons but YMMV. Since you already play cobras maybe its meant to be. Try them all and pick your favorite is always a good method too

Your post reminded me that I have MP33's in the attic. Maybe I should just pull those out instead of buying new clubs and punish myself thinking I'm a great ball striker! Those pure strikes though 🤤

I second this. Cobra tours are such great irons. First time playing a cobra iron coming from zx7. Really impressed

I owned one cobra amp 3 wood when I was in highschool and thought rickie was my hero but otherwise have never even considered a cobra club. I’m a believer big time now.

Same. These irons really stood out to me. I think the sole just works better for me than the v sole. I’ll need more time with them but so far so good. They are long and forgiving

I demod a pile of stuff and nothing was remotely close. Maybe the T100 but man I couldn’t miss with the tours. Leftys we’re out of stock so it took a little before I could order. I was so hooked I checked the website so frequently I had my order in online before the rep I spoke to on the phone about when they would restock could call me back when they did restock. I think even he was surprised ( maybe concerned is a better word 😅) any ways I’m just here to spread the good word lol
