Bryson - 58!

Amazing play from Bryson - you cannot take anything away from 61 -58 superb golf! It seems that his willingness to push the envelope to extremes has paid off - but only once he dialed it back a bit and found more balance in the parts - that may be the lesson here for everyone.

Several things made this quite remarkable.  First, he shot 58!  Second is to put up that 58 on the back of a 61....that is absolutely incredible golf by any standard, a scoring average below 60 for two rounds of tournament play.  Third is to do this on Saturday and Sunday to come from behind and win.

 

Fourth is the sound of complete silence from the GolfWRX home page.  It is sad actually.  Great golf is great golf, and I cannot understand how this does not get a mention.  I am confident this post will earn a lecture about how the front page is managed by someone else, it's a different algorithm, the platform is different, the software does not work that way, or something else I don't understand.

Nobody is saying it wasn't a great round, because it was. But maybe you should try harder.

Hard guy to cheer for no matter how impressive this is. Just cannot stand his behavior and never have even pre-LIV. While certainly impressive, I do have to agree with a few others that it feels a bit watered down given the context of the "competition". There are reasons why people wither in the spotlight of majors.

 

I will get flamed for saying this, but I think what Glover did yesterday was more impressive because his post round interview revealed how important it was for him to be able to spend more time with his family with the security his win provided for him. Having a few hundred million of guaranteed money in the bank and a no cut event certainly frees things up mentally. Still, tip of the hat to BAD I suppose.

his swing looks better than I’ve ever seen it before.  More rhythm, less forced and less of a lash I’d say, a very simple and repeatable move to my untrained eye

 

he also looks miles better after dropping all the protein shake era pounds

The scoring is impressive, but I can't help but feel like this is the equivalent of a triple A baseball player hitting 70 home runs.

First, no one said this.

Second, there is no mention (at least not right now) of Bryson's play on the home page.

Brysons 58 imo is the best round ever played at the pga level or above

Just read through this whole thread. Boy are there some really stupid post/comments on this. Was going to "quote" them individually but there is really no point. Stupid is as stupid does.

 

Great round by BDC no matter what tour he is on.

Shot 61-58 won and went down 2 slots in the world ranking. Exhibition golf doesn't matter except to a small few. As far as picking him for the Ryder cup, is that a joke? He is the 109th ranked player in the world playing in a exhibition league, never going to happen

A few responses/thoughts:

 

1) Bryson was asked about his driver and his response was (paraphrasing) "It's great for anyone with ball speed over 175mph".  So yes, Krank will sell lots more drivers, likely to many (most?) people who have no chance of hitting them well.

 

2) Clearly the Old White is a course that you can go low on, but what BAD did was on a different level.  I think they started the round early due to weather so I stumbled on it while I was cooking breakfast and ended watching most of it. BAD was paired with Matt Wolff and was hitting it WAY past him. Like 40 or 50 yards past him. It was a master class in both power and precision. And he looks SO much better having lost all that weight. Let's see what happens next week, but if he somehow manages to keep his form and wins big on LIV again, it would be really, really, really hard to keep him off the Ryder Cup team. 

 

3) Yes, Lucas Glover's win was super important to him and it was awesome to see a family man celebrate with his kids (also, now that he has a putter he believes in, watch out because he has always been a great ball striker, just had the yips). But the highlight of Bryson's final putt and his resulting celebration is also one of pure joy. Bryson isn't my favorite guy for sure but watching him jump in the air with the look of a kid who just came downstairs on Christmas morning to find a shiny new bike with his name on it was pretty damn cool.... even it was in a no cut event with preferred lies.

I really like Bryson and a few other LIV players but a lot of people need to see LIV for what it really is. Bryson etc are literally playing for pocket money, they couldn't care less which one of these LIV events they win. They are all the same.

 

61-58 is insane no matter what though, and lets not forget Bryson was inches away from a 59 a few years ago on the PGA tour. When it clicks it clicks. I suppose he would have had some pressure in getting the monkey off his back with the 1st LIV win to show why he was worth the huge investment but its nowhere near the same pressure as the back 9 of a major or top tier PGA tour event.

 

I'll say it again though - 61-58 is impressive no matter where you are playing. I was genuinely glued to the TV at the end!

I agree with you to a point.  Some internet golfers will take an observation that has nothing to do with a particular tour or player and spin it into whatever they want.  Since 2010 there hasn't been a period of more than 3 years between sub 60 rounds on any major tour.  So in that regard Bryson's round was almost overdue.

 

And if you look at the types of courses where these occur, well it's not gonna happen at Riviera.  Old White falls right in line with the rest of them.  Front of the line actually.  So when someone goes sub 60 there is it a great round?  Yes.  Is it surprising?  Not really.

Par is an artificial number.  Look at the length and then the number of strokes.

People don't realize how many times the pro tours play at something other than 72.  The Wyndham this weekend was also a Par 70.  In many cases they convert ~500-550yd Par 5 into Par 4s.  

 

Greenbrier played a Par 70 at 7,292yds (+- tee box and pin locations day to day)

 

Windham (Sedgefield) played a Par 70 at 7,131 (+-)

I dropped a message (and actually got a reply) from the Tour Van, who does most of the builds for the LIV guys.  He built Bryson's Krank driver and 5w, but said Bryson didn't want to release too much info yet.  Looks like someone at GD was able to get a few specs:

He’s using a Krank Formula Fire LD head with 6 degrees of loft and a Project X HZRDUS T1100 shaft (the same shaft he had in his TaylorMade Stealth 2 Plus driver for most of 2023) that measures just under 46 inches. DeChambeau also put a Krank fairway wood in play as well at The Greenbrier.
