US Ryder Cup team selections (*** NO LIV DISCUSSIONS ***)

the PGA needs to change their outdated point system and stick with the same # of Captains picks, they also need to decide if their PGA champ is going to be an automatic selection or not..as for the Solheim Cup I am not up to speed on what the point system is but i have a feeling that Rose Zhang is going to get a spot on the team

Some years the point system in place at the time will seem to work really well, and sometimes it will seem to not.  One thing for sure is there will be someone complaining about the point system and the captains picks no matter what the US or European team decide to do.

I’m not even sure that the “earned it” statements have any bearing on the Ryder Cup. Stroke play performance over 2 years doesn’t seem to relate much to a team, match play event.

People scoff at the notion of it being a bunch of buddies but I’m of the opinion that would produce better results than pairing up a bunch a guys who’ve been top 10’ing stroke play tournaments, but otherwise have no connection to one another.

At the end of the day, the Ryder Cup is a made for TV exhibition. Watching guys who are friends play together is going to be more entertaining than trying to find someone willing to play with Patrick Reed a couple years ago.

There’s been lots of “deserving” guys who have sucked balls in this format.

Pretty sure JTs main resume point is his 6-2-1 record at the Ryder Cup and his 16-5-3 record in team events. 2 majors and 15 tour wins before the age of 30. And is generally considered as one of the most talented players of his generation.

I don't think he should make the team this year but the argument is deeper than, "he's friends w/ Jordan and really wants it!".

It may all depend on whether Brooks falls out of the top 6 and is not selected with a captain's pick. Tough choices for Zach.

Whether he makes the 2023 team or not, JT is a lock for the 2025 team @ Bethpage when Tiger takes over as captain.

Thomas' record in singles is 2-3.  He's 14-2-3 in team play.  The guys he played with have equally as sparking records in those years as well...21-4-6.  Those same guys he played with (Spieth, Woods, Fowler, Cantlay, Berger), in the years he played with them, have a singles record of 5-1-2.

I am sure that JT had a lot to do with the success of his team matches, but in ever year he played on a RC or PC, he never qualified lower than 5th in the points.  So his RC and PC record are a result of him playing very good golf going into the events.

If ZJ wants to infer that somehow JT will clutch up at these events and play better than his current form...that's his choice, but I don't see any track record to say that JT has done it before.

For me it’s a no brainer to choose Bruce over JT.

The other thing that has given the European team an advantage is course familiarity. They choose courses that the US players never play. No one played in the 2021 Italian Open that was there. In the US they seem to use courses that most of the European players have played as part of the PGA Tour.

Not arguing with you here, just curious...

Do the Euro players actually have any familiarity with this course?

Seems most of the Euro selections primarily play PGAT events in the US, and it's not like the Euros are planning to pick a bunch of Italians just for the local knowledge.

Again, not arguing, asking the question out of ignorance as to whether the Euro players are actually familiar.

I could be wrong but I don't think Brooks is at risk at all. Of the current top 12 in the standings, I think the only positions at risk are Cam Young, Sam Burns, and Keegan Bradley.

Quite a few played in the '22 Italian Open at Marco Simone. I doubt Rory, Fitzpatrick, and Hovland would have played in that tournament had it not been an upcoming Ryder Cup venue.

The DP Tour played there in early May.  But not many of the Euro team members played.  Luke Donald did though.

That's like the equivalent of a former prom king & all-state football player asking out the prom queen at their 10 year reunion even though he's now fat, bald and unemployed. "Hey babe remember when I used to be hot, I promise I can turn it around!".

Ahh, thanks! So it seems that they took advantage of it. And of course American players would have needed to request a competing events release to play it...

🤣 This ain't Al Bundy bragging about 4 TDs at Polk High. JT won the PGA last year. He went 4-1 at the President Cup last year. He's 14th in the current points standing. I'm on record saying he shouldn't make the team this year but the people acting like his inclusion would be some egregious political scandal need to settle down. I'm sure there have been far worse selections.

Actually this sounds pretty accurate.  Maybe it would be more entertaining if we just did a lottery for 10 spots from the top 50 OWGR Americans and had 2 captains picks.

It's an interesting data point. Adrian Moronk who is a borderline pick for Europe missed the cut there. MacIntyre who's also probably on the bubble won there. Fitzpatrick and Rory contended which could be concerning for the US.

Pass. Talk about leaving firepower on the sideline. Under that framework we could get stuck watching Adam Schenk vs Victor Perez while Xander and Hovland are stuck watching at home.

With it being very possible that Bruce falls out of the Top 6 what do you do in that situation. It isn't likely Spieth would need at least a T-2, but Schauffele only needs a T-8 to pass him.

Like I said it isn't likely that both happen but it isn't a crazy thought that Bruce could fall to 7 and then what.

Easy answer.

I'm all for the Captain's pick.  If we went based solely on the points, a group of guys would automatically get in that haven't been playing good golf lately.  We should be putting together the best team from the best players available, that are currently playing their best golf.

This same discussion is happening over on the ladies side, with the Solheim Cup.  Daniel Kang and Lexi Thompson are automatically in based on points for the US team, mostly from performances last year.  But they are playing absolutely abysmal golf lately.  Lexi has only played something like 8 events all year, missed the cut in 7.  She shouldn't even be in the running, let alone an auto pick.  But long-time friendships with the Captain will likely keep both of them on the team.

I’m confused…if Lexi is in on points what exactly does “long time friendship with the Captain “ have to do with it?

Another way to put it…has a player that qualified on points ever been booted for poor play?  I don’t think so.

I'm well aware of that as I've mentioned in other posts. My reply that you quoted was about when the captains picks are to be announced. Has nothing to do with the automatic qualfiers points.

lets make it a reality show like the Voice or one of those where people pay 99cents to vote.  Top 6 make it on points, Captain gets 4 picks, and We The People decide the final 2.  All proceeds go to the charity of choice/PIF.

I think it's interesting so many people consider Cam Young a lock...

For what? A T-8 at The Open? He came in 2nd at the WGC Match Play, but that was almost six months ago. Outside of The Open he hasn't had a T25 in a decent field since The Masters, right after the WGC.

I think 1-8 are safe.

1. Scottie

2. Wyndham

3. Cantlay

4. Harman

5. Brooks

6. Max

7. Xander

8. Spieth

The remaining 4 spots, IMO, could go to any one of the following 10 guys:

1. Cam Young (9th)

2. Morikawa (10th)

3. Keegan (11th)

4. Burns (12th)

5. Rickie (13th)

6. JT (14th)

7. Lucas Glover (16th)

8. Tony Finau (21st)

9. DJ (40th)

10. Bryson (53rd)

If it's me, I'm going Keegan, Glover, Rickie and JT. Number of factors there. Glover being the hot hand. Keegan has won recently and really cares. JT has a spectacular record in team events, seemed to be finding something late and wants more than anyone. Rickie having been on winning teams and his ball striking.

That's as it stands now. Guy I'm most interested to watch the next two weeks is Morikawa. I'd also give Bryson more of a look if I didn't think he was a thorn in the team room. Dude is just weird.

Like it or not, it's a made for TV event. Names like JT and Rickie are going to draw more eyes than Young or Burns.

Trust me. You have a better chance than DJ or BDC of being a captains pick for the RC.
