I'm honestly going to be fascinated with JT's play in the Ryder Cup. Unless my impressions are incorrect, in his bad rounds he's played perfectly fine and JT-like... until he blows up, starts pressing, and loses control of his round and his tournament.

But match play is a completely different beast. If JT skulls a bunker shot in match play... well, that's too bad, but you move on to the next hole. It's mentally a very, very different ballgame, and it rewards an aggressive player like JT.

He could end being sneaky effective and more than just a locker room cheerleader.

What's the argument for Finau?

DG Strokes Gained - Burns (19th) Finau (28th) - Adv Burns

Ryder Cup Pts - Burns (12th) Finau (21st) - Adv Burns

OWGR - Burns (21st) Finau (20th) - Adv Finau

Fed Ex - Burns (T9) Finau (T20) - Adv Burns

Wins - Burns (1) Finau (2) - Adv Finau

Top 20s - Burns (13) Finau (10) - Adv Burns

Cuts - Burns (6) Finau (4) - Adv Finau

I like Tony a lot but I think Burns has the better case this year.

not ONE person that has picked JT has defended his abyssmal record this year, your only alibi is his presence in the locker room or his previous experience...I have a feeling ZJ is going to use the same excuses when he explains his picks

How exactly could you defend his record this year? I'm not sure anyone can. You have to default to subjective measures not different than the Euro's did to get Sergio and Poulter on a the squad.

ZJ is making quite the bet. If JT struggles, ZJ will take the blame. If JT continues to excel in team events, ZJ looks like a genius for looking beyond the data. It's not the bet I'd make, however, as the great Bill Parcells once said, “If I'm going to be asked to cook the meal, I'd like to be able to pick the groceries.”.

I basically agree. They would be hoping he could conjure up his previous good play (which he was unable to do all year.) Last year (2022) JT and YJS had a good Pres Cup. But he was 5th in points and his OWGR was 7th. He is now 15th in points and OWGR is 26th. Looking at both of those guys current form, would you play them in the (likely) afternoon foursomes?

In recent cups the US has been playing all 12 in at least one match on the first day. Which means only 4 get to play in both. If he picks JT, I think you will see him in Fourball on day 1. They will see how it goes. I personally don’t think he deserves to play twice on day 1. He is not a top player this year.

In 2018 in France, Phil was 10th in points and OWGR was 25. He played in the day 1 afternoon foursomes with BD, and got pounded 5 & 4. That was it for him until singles on Sunday. I cannot recall if he complained or not?

I’d like to see them pick the guys that earned it. But good luck and enjoy Italy.

I agree completely. One of the nice things about the Ryder Cup is you can adjust on the fly. If ZJ was putting together a schedule today, the Spieth/JT team wouldn't be going out all 4 team sessions. However, if you put them out in session one and they boat race Rory/Lowry, maybe you ride the hot hand?

At this point, the only guys I'm convinced will go 5 matches for sure are Scottie, Xander, Cantlay. Scottie's arguably the best player in the world and Xander/Cantlay are a proven team. Everything else should be written down in pencil 😉

In the last match, 2021 at Whistling Straits, DJ was our top ranked (OWGR) at #2 and the only guy on the US team to play all 5 matches - because he was so solid - he kept winning and was 5-0.

I think Tiger averaged around 4.6 matches per Cup. Even though he often didn’t play near his best, people still wanted to see him and how could a Captain sit him more than once? He would get roasted! Our Captain has more flexibility now with TW and PM no longer playing.

#1 Rahm and Hovland played in 5 for the Euro team. Rory played in 4. He didn’t have an A game. Maybe not even a B game?

I remember sitting Rory being a huge deal. It was justified as he was playing terribly. I believe that was his "chasing Bryson" phase. Of course, sitting on the sidelines lit a fire and he went out and beat Xander in singles who was undefeated at the time. That was also a spring board into the next two years where he's played exceptional golf.

I'd bet on Hovland / Rahm / Rory / Scottie / Scheffler / Cantlay all going 5. After that, who knows.

Except he has never been on a RC team.

I’m quite aware of that…thanks. He was 10th in points in 2010 but wasn’t picked.

I was referring to the “want” to play.

Burns

Burns had a good year and I understand the logic after his match play win but he has not performed well at all under the brightest lights. Best he's ever done in a major is tied for 20th at the PGA in 2022. Missed the cut in 2 of 4 majors this year with his best finish a T29 at the Masters. Lucas Glover won twice this year compared to once for Burns and he's a US Open champion. Also been on fire lately since he fixed the putter. More career wins too. Finau had 1 win in 2023 so tied with Burns but has finished Top 5 in every major. Also has more career wins and performed really well in his only Ryder Cup appearance after beating Tommy Fleetwood in singles who had previously been 4-0-0. I trust him way more with a big match on the line.

if people think that Jordan and JT are going to bring out some magic are delusional. Im a big YJS fan and he has been playing poorly lately, he backed his way into the Tour Champ and just went thru the motions, he has been hitting it sideways most of the summer..He looks tired, the hurt wrist mysteriously disappeared?

Sam's last Top 10 was in May? Glover has 2 wins in the last 6 weeks?

Remember it's a 2 year deal, not a 6 week try out.

If Team captains, or the PGA of America, or spectators want to assemble a roster of currently hot trending players then make it a June-July-August window to accumulate points.

ZJ won't base his picks just on who is playing the best at the end of the season, he needs parings.

It's likely that Sam Burns gets in to partner Scheffler.

Morikawa's game is probably more suited to a European course that some of the others, that will be a consideration.

JT could easily still make it in even if he just plays the better ball matches and the last day. Spieth will certainly go and Rickie has a good chance, so it would give ZJ some options.

Brooks will be there.

Keegan and Cam Young look the least likely to go at present.

Assuming rumors are correct, well done.

Yup Sheff dusted the Euros.  Captain Stricker got all kinds of crap here in WRX for picking Sheff also 😂

The ranking system isn't infallible yet some want to treat it as such. Sure sometimes the top 12 align with the best combination of player performance and team chemistry but sometimes not. Therefore Captains picks remain an integral part of the Ryder Cup.
