Winning breeds togetherness , camaraderie, team chemistry.

In 2021 at Whistling Straits the European team was losing matches and did not seem to have any of the above.

I think sometimes it's the chicken and sometimes the egg.

I am somewhat surprised at the angst the captain picks have made in the golfing world.

I have said that I did not envy Johnson having to make his picks this year as most of the players outside the auto qualifiers had real reasons not to select them. If he goes chalk and has the top 12 people would complain. You have people stumping for Finau who wasn't even close. So, he took Fowler (13) and Thomas (15) which isn't totally unreasonable.

Personally, I probably would have gone 1-12 this year. I don't have a lot of confidence in anyone beyond 9 or maybe even 8, so just take them in order and call it a day.

President's Cup hasn't been a fair fight for a really long time. The US hasn't lost since 1998. Not sure if some task force is responsible for them winning the last 4. Of the 48 members of the last 4 teams...US had had 4 members outside the top 25 OGWR and none outside the top 30. Internationals had 37 outside the top 25 and 14 outside the top 50.

I'd just leave it as 2-1 since the task force was used.

Then you look closer at the last 3 RCs

US won in 2016, but the Euro wasn't very deep on paper with 5 guys outside the top 40 OGWR and the US having all 12 members inside the top 31.

Euros won 2018 with a much more balanced roster with all 10 of 12 players inside the top 26 OGWR and and US having all 12 members inside the top 25.

US won in 2021, but again the Euros weren't deep with 6 guys 35th or worse OGWR and the US all in the top 21.

So is this task force even really making a difference when the US is winning when it's heavily favored, and losing when they are only slightly favored?

Fair points. The Presidents Cup has been one sided and was never a problem for a "task force" to solve.

Regarding your 2nd point, perhaps you need to breakdown the competition during the period the Euro's were spanking us both home and abroad. Pretty sure we've consistently had the better teams on paper but manage to screw the pooch.

I looked back to ancient times (1995) and thought it was somewhat interesting to note how much things have changed. (And yes, I am aware the points and OWGR have changed over the years.)

In 1995 the US was the home team and they lost 14.5 to 13.5. On August 27 we had 2 players inside the top 10; Pavin (7) and Couples (8). And just 3 more inside the top 20; Lehman, Love, and Roberts. Average age was 36! We had 5 players over 40 and just one under 30 years old - Phil was 25. He went 3-0 in his first RC.

Average age for this year is 30. (It could have been bit lower if Cameron Young was selected. He is 26.) We have no players over 40. The oldest is Harman at 36. Rickie is second oldest (34). We have 5 players under 30 years old. Looking at the current OWGR, the US could have all 12 in the top 20, but Cameron Young, Keegan, and Finau were not selected.

Edit: another big difference (versus today) on that same ranking from August 27, 1995, the RoW had 7 in the top 20: Norman, Price, Els, Jumbo Ozaki, Elk, Vijay, & David Frost.

It's funny that you mention the 1995 RC. Lanny Wadkins took Curtis Strange as a captain's pick that year. There was a lot of second guessing even before the matches were played.

Sports of The Times; Strange Case Of a Ryder Cup Choice - The New York Times (nytimes.com)

Strange went 0-3-0. Both he and Wadkins lived in ignominy for a long, long, long time after that. Many years later, in an interview, Larry Nelson said, matter-of-factly, that he was supposed to be the US RC captain in 1995, but Wadkins convinced him to step aside and wait for 1997. But the brass ring never came by again for LN. What a shame.

1997 was another I looked at. It was at Valderramma in Spain. Seve was Captain at just 40 years old. The Euro’s won again 14.5 to 13.5. Kite was US Captain.

It was Tigers first RC. He was just 21 and went 1-3-1. He lost in singles to Constantino Rocca 4 & 2. Mamma Mia!

And Davis Love went 0-4-0. He lost in singles to Johansson 3 & 2. Oofda!

Ole!

Edit: I would like to see the record since 1983 (or so, since Europe) for US rookies in foursomes.

Apologies if this has already been posted. I didn't see it...

ZJ's reason(s)/explanation he picked JT:

He has without question been the heart and soul of Team USA, Ryder Cups, our emotional leader I would say," -the US Captain said, as quoted by golfmonthly.com!"He just leads by example. His passion for the Ryder Cup is very evident. In my mind, he was born for this, and there is - you just don’t leave JT at home."

There you have it.

What’s the over under on the amount of mentions of Mike Thomas during the coverage? Should we start at 5.5 per day? I’ll take the over and bet there’s at least one interview… y’all know he’s a PGA Professional right?!

my .02 cents, there’s no way JT wasn’t being picked, he’s boys with Tiger. Does it matter? Not really could be a huge shot in the arm for him, someone actually believes he’s capable of playing world class golf because he certainly doesn’t regardless of what he says. Or this could pressure cook him, and we see a Jordan Spieth/Rickie Fowler pseudo slump because of the social media age we live in.
If I was captain would I have picked him I’m not sure. I’d have gone to the players and said basically who do you not want. Then factored that in but I’d be more strongly inclined to go 1-12 barring 10 being an absolute no from the players. Know what I mean? I did find it funny Zach justifying his picks by saying a pick deserved to be there… if he deserved to be there he’d have qualified I get that 50 percent of the team is picks but I found it funny.

Can you source that, just curious.

It's been reported forever that the PGA of America asked Nelson to step aside, but first I've heard of Wadkins actually doing it, so again, just naturally curious.

Nelson got passed over several times sometimes for lesser candidates (looking at you Tom Lehman) or a retread (Watson), very unfortunate and I suppose making his disappointment known over time didn't help his cause, but had to be a reason --- since he seems like such a genuine guy, I guess most assume it was always PGA of America personal politics, which is certainly a good guess.

That said, if I were sitting across from Keegan and he chirped about bein an outsider, and I Love the guy, quirks and all, I'd just say that there's an easy remedy to that...

Hey @Strategery, I hope all's well😊

In my decade+ as a member here, i have never responded to a single emoji, as my posts are simple, sincere & straightforward, regardless of whether one agrees with me or not. I also understand that many do not agree with me, or even like me, and I'm good with that, as I would be concerned if this were not the case🤙

However, I am curious as to exactly what in my post that you found "confusing?" I, through first hand experienceS, have found FC to be a DB, and I find taking this outside of the Players' locker room to be a total DB move, though coming from Freddy, it does not surprise me. Madison, looking through a female's lenses, who happens to have been Partnered with him, disagrees.

And no, jealousy is not in play as a few other Tour boys were much more flirtatious with her than FC, one goin so far as to ask her out, though he had no idea that we were dating. Being the vein narcissistic SOB that I am, I took this stuff as a compliment, lol🤷🏻‍♂️. Besides, since that time, we have become decent buds.

If my above post did not clearly convey that sentiment, apologies

Regardless, thanks for takin the time to drop the emoji and I hope that you're having a great season👊

Hey Bro, thanks much for the thoughts😊!!!

Yah, we're doin great and she sends her very best to you🤗😘🥰!!

I've never spoken of this prior hough I've dropped everything else on the board as You and some other Guys served as my shrink through some very tough & trying times, physically, emotionally and mentally, so I might as well address this, lol. That said, originally, the reason that Madison kicked back from posting was due to a ban on ANY non-Club approved social media/internet postings from her new Club, which while it seemed a tad draconian to me, upon looking into our Club's rules pertaining to this stuff, they were similar🤷🏻‍♂️

Well, FF and every now and again, Maddie would drop a post, usually tempering me or my post(s), lol. Well, she got called on the carpet and told to cease and desist, lol. She only posted one post, which was totally harmless, non-offensive, etc. She thought that it was a club member who turned her in, though I believe it to have been a board member, due to a few later comments that he made to me, though being the balless spineless eunuch that he is, when I confronted him, he of course denied it further. Not to worry as I've told him these feelings a few times belly to belly😊

Be that as it may, Madison & I, in all of the years that we have known each other, Partnered with each other and dated each other, have NEVER had a SINGLE disagreement, much less an argument. Until she started posting on the board😂😂🤷🏻‍♂️. I mean, I'm much more restrained on this board than I am belly to belly, which she has been the first to state on the board. I guess that it was the point that I was bringing up some things that she felt did not need to be brought up, even though I have NEVER EVER posted something that was said to me in confidence, of which there obviously has been much over the past decade+. I still clear some things with the individual(s) telling me, as recently as this past week regarding the Cup Team, etc., and have always abided by the speaker's wishes. She also thinks that I'm too unforgiving and rigid on that "what is said and goes on in the locker room stays in the locker room" stuff, though me having spent the better part of 17 years IN in those locker rooms while she has spent none, I don't expect her to understand. That is not a rule to me, it's a LAW, and it is not optional or situational, it is IMMUTABLE‼️

So that is one of the reasons that I backed off from posting, as I Adore Madison and would not be here without her. Not figuratively speaking, LITERALLY, I would not be here. As she could not post, she would still go on, read my posts and instead of responding on the board, she would respond in the living room, in dining room or even at the club😂😂. Bottom line, She thinks that I'm too unforgiving and inflexible when it comes to my athletic rules and "laws," while she has stated many times, including on this board, that I'm one of the most forgiving individuals that she ever met socially and/or personally.

I cannot explain why that is so cept to say that I took these rules/laws in the vein that they were communicated to me by my Mentors, most of whom you are familiar. So Madison could see that I missed posting and she said that while she still doesn't really understand my inflexibility in this area, after talking to former Teammates from other sports(🏈) at a few recent reunions, and seeing that I've been this way since my teens, she figured that one, I wasn't changing anytime soon and secondly, we ain't gonna be sharing any athletic locker rooms in the near future, so once again, she's accepted me with all of my warts🤪😂😂

Apologies for the novella Brotha, lol👊

All the Best👊

And DJ was 7-9 before playing on a course specifically suited and specifically set up for his strengths. He went 1-4 in France. Do you think the Euro's are going to set this course up like Whistling Straits or try to minimize the American advantages like they did at Le Golf National? I'd bet on the later.

And how does his game fit a course any different than a dozen other long hitters, especially Rory?

Phil was poison in that locker room, was back channeling his whines to media during the event, and threw Watson under the bus for his own selfish and ego driven purposes. He became the dictionary definition of “tool” for me at that point and has only added (b) - (f) in the sub categories in definition since then. You know that was the wrong way to handle it!

Phil was simply saying what most in the room were thinking. He fell on his sword for the team.

How do you explain a 13-21-3 RC record for "the greatest match player ever"?

I think I explained it in my prior posts. Based on his description of the RC as an exhibition, I don't think Woods placed much importance on the matches. Is that what you're questioning or do you not think Tiger is in the discussion for greatest match play player?

I'll verify that Couples is a first class DB. Years ago he played in the Telus Skins Game outside of Toronto at the Devil's Pulpit GC. He was paid $100K to show up, a healthy sum in 1992, IIRC.

Paired with Raymond Floyd and two others, he was about to address his shot when a lady in the gallery was stung by several wasps and yelped with pain. Couples looked over and barked:

"Don't worry lady, it's only the most important shot of my life!"

I resisted my urge to jump the ropes and punch his lights out. We stayed with him for one more hole as he endlessly griped about the course. It is my understanding he received a stern lecture after the round from one of the sponsor's execs.

Hey Bro, I hope all's well and you & the Fam have a Great Holiday weekend👊

That sounds like vintage Freddy as he is one of the three most arrogant rude entitled Pros that I've interacted with in all of my years in the game, with Norman bein #1

I've told the story before of him bein only one of three Tour Boys that were disinvited from the most prestigious 36-hole PGA sanctioned non-official Charity Event, The Frank B. Fuhrer/Family House Open(Fuzzy & Norman we're the other two disinvitees. Is this even a word😂😂??, lol). That's a story for another day though it's funny as 💩💩, lol. That said, I was paired with & got along fine with Fuzzy, and while he loved Maddie, lol, I'd have to rank him #3 as he was a Diva and very high maintenance. Receiving invitations were twenty Four(24) Tour Pros, 72% of whom were in the Top-20 PGA Tour Money List, three(3) spots were given to the Class A's who won the Top-3 Pro Tourneys in Western PA, along with the three(3) Champions from the top three(3) Amateur Tourneys in the Western PA area plus our Club Champion(I Played four(4) times) and Oakmont's Club Champion also received an invitation, for a 32 Player field.

The Champions' picture wall looked like a Who's Who of the World Golf HoF, with Benhard, Gentle Ben, Mr. 63, Sir Nick, Ernie, Jose Maria, Nick Price, Colin, Vijay, Lanny, Phil, Hubert Green, and yah, even Norman & Freddy, as they were the only Past Champions to have their life time invitations revoked. You'd think that he, Fuzzy and Norman wouldn't really care, though between the three(3), 11 telephone calls were made to Mr. Fuhrer attempting to change his mind, obviously to no avail. Norman even had his private jet🛩️ take a side trip to the Burgh to meet with Mr. Fuhrer belly to belly, though he'd sealed his fate the day that he and I got into it over his mistreatment of both a locker room attendant and a bartender, both of whom were very very dear to myself and the other members. Even if they were not, it wouldn't have mattered, though Norman picked the wrong men to disrespect that day.

Couples continued his out of control narcissistic "me me me" behavior(I realize that ALL who achieve ANYTHING in this world have to have narcissistic personality traits, though the critical key is to know when to turn em on, when to turn em up & when to turn em off!!), displayed when he recently brought up comments from other Players that were said about Keegan IN THE LOCKER ROOM!! WHAT IS SAID IN THE LOCKER ROOM STAYS IN THE LOCKER ROOM!! THIS IS IMMUTABLE, NOT OPTIONAL OR SITUATIONAL!!

Thanks for responding Brotha, as it's nice to see that Freddy is an equal opportunity DB😂😂!!

All the Best🍻

RP

In the end, only three things matter~

How much that you loved...

How mightily that you lived...

How gracefully that you accepted both victory & defeat...

GHIN: Beefeater 24
