... That is the thing ain't it? They are modern day Gladiators and unlike the movies, most aren't Mensa members that can parlay their 3 years in the NFL into a solid business or any kind of career. What are most of them gonna do when they stop playing football?  It certainly isn't like most big college programs are making sure they get an education and guidance on what to do after their football career is over.

My beef with trying to hold players to contracts is that the owners are not held to the terms, either. How many times have you heard of a guy signing a 5 year contract worth $50m only to get paid $25m because he was either cut or was injured? Very few NFL contracts have substantial guarantees. 

 

If you take the stance that "you signed the contract and took the risk by doing so" then owners need to be held to the same standard.

... I may have posted this before but since BD was the Coaches Kid, when I had to substitute as every player had to be in the game for at least 2 innings and 1 at bat, I would sit my son. A few games into the season the kid that replaced my son struck out and we lost by 1 run with the bases loaded. After the game the parents asked if we could have a "parent to coach talk". 

... I was a little surprised to hear them ask me not to sit BD anymore. They understood I was just being sure there was no favoritism and was trying to be fair to the team but since he was the best layer on the team he should always be in the game. To BD's credit he understood why I benched him and didn't complain but he didn't like it and was very pleased the parents called me out LOL.

... I only played SS through my senior year. Never even considered playing anywhere else with the exception of one game when our starting catcher was sick and the back up turned his ankle stepping one a bat. Coach asked for volunteers and I said WTH, I'lll give it a shot. Warming up wasn't bad but the very first pitch the guy took a big hack at the ball, I involuntarily shut my eyes and the ball knocked the wind out of me. LOL, one play at a different position.

Yep, good point. But the owner can throw any number out there and as long as it's not guaranteed, it's just fiction. Why include a number in a contract if it's not obligated? I spent a career negotiating contracts, so I guess that's why it feels off to me. If you can't abide by the terms, and I'd include anything put in writing as a term, then don't include the "total deal." It only protects the owner but does nothing for the player. 

 

On to the kick-off! Go Lions! Gotta pull for the underdog in this one, but like both teams, so it should be fun!

... You may remember on Hard Knocks when Goff wasn't sure, but thought the sun set in the east. 😱 And he is supposedly one of the smarter guys! I think most of the players just aren't very smart and have no idea what they are signing, they just take their agents advice.

I played baseball through high school and I started on varsity at: LF, RF, C, 1B, and was a spot relief pitcher, played all the infield spots in a pinch.  In fact, the only position I didn’t play in a game was CF.  But I was only “best” at the position last of 1B as a senior and catcher.

At this point why even call it a contract. In the NFL it’s more like a temporary guideline.
