Falling to the ground and squirming is like the flop in basketball. But in this case it doesn't draw any penalties. It just delays the game. However, there are some serious injuries that dictate that response.

Once I was in a game and broke my leg blocking the whole DL. Crawled/dragged myself off the field and set the bone myself. Coach says "need something for the pain?" And The Q retorted, "just some old rusty nails to chew on." Next play had 102 yard fumble return. I did have one good leg after all. True story.

I guess you can't tell the NFL players to just "rub some dirt on it" since, what, only have the stadiums have real grass?

The worst floppers are without doubt soccer players.  I played in college and whenever I was matched up against a foreigner I would try to drill them early and often.  This was before the professional foul was an immediate yellow card.  It would immediately tell me what I was up against.  If they were leg grabbers and rollers I felt pretty confident it was going to be my day.  If they didn't I would get a little nervous, like I would really have to work a lot harder.

 

Though I have to say, at the end of the game the injury histrionics do serve a purpose.  I bet I walked/ran/sprinted between 6-8 miles in 90 minutes and when someone went down I welcomed the ability to put my hands on my knees and just take a break.  This does not include the floppers in the box (gross to me) or the full game floppers.

Actually the professional foul is just a tap/trip of feet to stop play from developing. It is never flagged and most times the offending player offers hand in apology.  

The sliding tackle was my weapon of choice when playing all those years ago.

As an outside midfielder our coach always said the ball or the man can get by you, but not both so we did what we had to do.  In the late 80's repetitive fouls rarely resulted in yellows, grabbing rarely resulted in yellows, tackles with the intent to play the ball coming in from suspect angles weren't as quick to draw the yellow either.

 

My folks came to one game a year whether they wanted to or not.  My mother always lamented my lack of aggressiveness.  My senior year they were in the stands and after the game my mother said to me (and I am paraphrasing), "Why even play if you can't play right?  Foul here, foul there, grabbing, sliding, and with that hair you couldn't even see... the goal was very nice though."

We had a Coach who just wanted to collect his paycheck. Period. We never did any drills. We just missed playoff first year and second we had a team that would of challenged for State Title. Until our whole Defense quit just prior to first game cause they were sick of playing for a useless Coach. What could of been etc. etc. 

As for hair I had a bunch and used to wear a bandana to keep it out of my mouth.

... It is criminal to either be apathetic or selfish or just bad at coaching when a good coach can make a such a huge difference in young mans life. My Dad was gone from 2nd grade through my freshman year, training for Special Forces and doing 2 tours in VN. I was lucky to have a coach that became a surrogate father and the best coach of my life. I can't imagine how I would have ended up without his guidance and trust. He was a defensive minded coach and let me call my own plays in the 5th grade! I had one other coach I considered a good but not great coach. All the rest of them sucked.

Overall record 15-14-1

 

1) I think the 2 time Champs are starting to roll. Georgia -14

2) In order for the Noles to make the playoffs they need to keep winning.  Wake will be the latest victim, even with a big spread.  FSU -20.5

3) I think this will be a high scoring PAC 12 shootout.  Colo/UCLA Over 62.5

4) The Beavers gnaw the wildcats.  Oregon State -3.5

5) I always root for the service academies, but I think the spread is too big.  Give me Colo St +13.5

6) After the 1st Quarter against the Tide the Vols offense didn’t due squat, but Kentucky isn’t the tide.  Give me the Vols -3.5.

Undoubtedly some injuries are a lot more painful than others.  It just seems to me as though there are a lot more wusses out there than there were back in the day.  I'm no pro, but I've gotten banged up pretty good a few times just playing pick-up games, including a broken ankle and crushed cheek bone.  I don't think I ever acted like some of the million dollar babies I see out there.
