ZX5 stopping power

Recommended Posts

I currently play Pro 225s in DG 105 R300 and I swing 7 iron around 80-82 and I carry 150-155. They stop fine.

Yesterday, I hit some off the shelf zx5 in KBS Tour Light Stiff and I was carrying the 7 iron 167-170. They were rolling out to 180 plus though, so they were super low spin for me.

Yes I know distance isn't everything, but another 10-15 yards is hard to ignore.

I'm curious with the KBS Tour Light as a jumping off point, what shaft direction could I look towards that feels similar, but produces A LOT more spin.

I'm a low AOA player, like minus 2 degrees, so I'm not naturally good at producing spin as it is.

Just my opinion/experience.

There’s a lot of variation among 90-110 gram steel iron shafts. They do tend to break down into 2 groups though. The first are those looking to maximize distance and provide close-to-carbon feel. The second it aimed more towards those who are using heavier steel shafts and are looking to maintain similar spin/flight characteristics in a lighter weight package.

The Tour Lite is in the first group. DG105’s are in the second. Three standard suspects in the second group are DG105’s, Modus 105’s, and C Taper Lite’s. Each has a somewhat different profile. I’ve found that C Taper Lite’s work exceptionally well with ZX5’s. Just my experience of course.

So despite producing more speed (in my brief experience) a shaft can actually produce less spin?

marginal changes, its maybe 200-300 rpm max and thats at the extreme side of it. Biggest ways to change spin by several thousand rpm is to change balls or club heads. Ian Frasier the guy who ran TXG now Club Champions on youtube has a bunch of videos on fittings and numbers for clubs and hes been pushing the shafts matter but you can see bigger changes faster else where and are not a fix for massive spin issues. I do want to be clear its equivalent strikes being compared, if you cant hit something its going to perform way different.

I believe the ZX5s are quite low spin beasts compared to the mizuno, its a low spin distance monster like that P790s, I believe teh mizuno are less of that I thgink thedirect comparison would be zx7 - but I may be remembering wrong. If Im off on those comparisons my first question would be this is on a golf store sim? My second would be is this a golf store sim range ball? The sim could be juiced, and they could be using a low spin ball to fudge the numbers.

I've read other people say the Mizunos are low spin too. I last hit them on a computer well over a year ago and I don't remember their spin numbers. I know a well hit shot with a real ball will put a divot in the green and will stay on the green.

My ZX5's seem to spin more for me than my previous irons, Apex 19. Don't have any trackman data to compare numbers, just my observation from seeing how the ball reacts on the green. The ZX5's are a little longer than the Apex 19's but lofts are also a little stronger. I have Modus 105 S shafts in the ZX5's, very good combo.

I'm beginning to bet I was getting them thin with Over hit balls at golf galaxy, ergo the excessive distance and even longer roll out.

What ball do you play? That will have more effect on decent angle and stopping power than a similar weighted shaft.

Not sure what your course conditions were, but that can play a factor too.  I have spun my 7 iron back.  Don't have much issue with roll out until I get the the 5 iron.  It is supposed to be a higher launching iron that has decent angle to help stop the ball....from what I saw in reviews after my fitting.

Since you have specific stats I assume you may have been in a sim?

For one thing, hitting off mats reduces spin a bit.

For another, using the “range” algo on a sim will always result in more rollout. If you want to see if shots will bite you need to hit into a simulated green. The ball behaves much differently.

I just switched from ZX5s to 225s precisely because I wasn’t getting enough spin. Standard loft I was getting about 5300 rpm on a 7i with the ZX5s vs. 6000 with the 225s. Ordered the 225s bent 2* weak and I’m just shy of 7k.

Did you notice a big change in forgiveness from one club to the other. The only possible complaint I have about the 225 is they aren't that forgiving.

I don’t think the 225s are unforgiving, but the ZX5s are extremely forgiving. I definitely notice more loss of distance on mishits with the 225s, particularly off the toe. Overall though I still get better front to back dispersion with the 225s - if I absolutely smoke one, I get about an extra club of distance whereas with the ZX5s we’re sometimes talking 20+ yards long.

I am not nearly as fast as the dude who hits the 5700 rpm with the ZX5 mk ii above.  I am probably 10 mph slower, so I won't get the same spin.

My misses are thin, and the thing I like about the 225 is that it's generally short.  I can hit a controlled low draw pretty good now with the 225, so I think that's enough of a benefit to ride em out.

Although, the ZX5 Mk II will be what I dream about at night.
