Project x iron shafts question

Anyone had trouble with a specific flex in px irons shafts?

I’ve tried 6.5 on multiple occasions and something is off with my timing.  I’ve played 7.0 in the past and shot my career best round.  They are work, and tried 6.5 to be able to save some mileage on the body but it never feels right.  Then today…My playing partner got a new set of irons with px 6.0.  I hit them today and found them to be fantastic.  Flighted shots, high shots.  Didn’t over spin with short irons.  This is what I thought the 6.5 would be

so it seems I can hit 7.0 and the 6.0 fine, but the 6.5 feels off.

I've had the 6.5 and 6.0(briefly) and tested the 7.0.  6.0 was terrible for me.  The ball would start left and keep curving that way on most of my shots.  6.5 and 7.0 were way more stable for me where the ball would start at the target line and turn over.  The 7.0 was more work and lower spin.  I was getting elbow pain at the time and moved onto something else.

OP it is probably just a mental thing but just go with the 6.0. Rory plays the 7.0 and to me that one is really, really stiff. (And McIlroy is not one who hits his short irons that close with the 7.0; misses a lot of wedges to the right, like he did this past weekend.) Most pros who play Rifles are in the 6.5, some even in 6.0.

The Rifle 6.0 is as stiff as extra stiff in most other brands. I personally notice a big difference between 5.5 and 6.0 and I like the 115g weight of the 5.5. My experience is flex does not matter all that much, but weight does. And it has to feel right.

6.0 plays very stiff to flex. As others have said, weight and profile that matches up with your timing and tempo matters more than the number(s) printed on the shaft or who plays what on the pro tour.

Thanks for the thoughts on this.

im playing modus 130 stiff, which feels like the px 6.5 to me, without the kick px has in that weight I can’t seem to time.

I think whats the issue is the 6.0 and 7.0 feel very linear with no distinct kick, and the 6.5 have a kick I feel like I need to time.

per https://www.golfshaftreviews.info/project-x-iron-shaft-review/ there isn't as much difference between 6.0, 6.5, and 7.0 as one might expect. A few noteworthy comparisons:

- in a 6i length the 6.5 is only 1.4g heavier than 6.0

- the EI area of 6.5 and 7.0 are the same (21), and only marginally higher than 6.0 (20)

- 6.5 has slightly lower tip and butt torque than 7.0

- 6.0 and 6.5 have the same tip torque, which is marginally lower than the 7.0

7.0 and 6.5 play similarly to me but my partial shots are better with the 6.5 and I don't feel like I need to step on them as much (100 mph 6i SS for reference). It seems odd that that specific flex would give you trouble, was everything else equal?

For the 7.0 and 6.5 yes.  Same heads, same length, same sw.  The 6.0 was my friends spec, but the right length and close on lie angle. Confusing to me as well.  I’m probably just getting slower in my old age 🙂

Years back, could have played PX 6.5 but chose PX 6.0 for 15+ yrs.  People often overlook, our SS and mechanics behave differently with different shafts.

Sounds like an easy answer.  Just get some 6.0 PX for yourself.  Don't need to think it much more than that.  They are plenty stiff, as a look at their overall bend profile shows that they are really an 'X' from butt to tip

I’m going to request it next time I get fit.  No fitter has putt it in my hands

I play 7.0 8 irons in my wedges and have played 6.5's for about 8 years now.

I've had the same twos sets of blackout 6.5's for about 5 years and swapped them into multiple heads but even prior with different shaft sets they never felt 'off' to me or gave me results I wasn't expecting.

Right on.  To be fair, I’ve got a set of 7.0s I’ve played in multiple heads the past 5 years.  They always feel and play the same.

I was more puzzled that I couldn’t time the the 6.5s after giving them a significant try in a set of irons and then having a set of 6.0 feel pretty stable and easy to hit.

Update for the group. I snagged a set of 6.0s locally  and have them built up and drying in my tcbs (backup irons).

Update on this.  Hit the tcbs with 6.0 a couple of times.   Good shots are fantastic and as my confidence/comfort with the shaft increases and I swung faster my timing suffered.

I’m going to stick (go back to using) in the px lz 6.5 in the tcbs.  For me, the weight of the lz 6.5 and the kick of the shaft makes is more consistent and my dispersions is better.  Feel isn’t quite as nice as the lz feel much firmer in hand and tips vs og px 6.0.
