Players iron head recommendation for high launch, high spin player

Recommended Posts

Looking for recommendations for a forgiving players iron for a high dynamic loft player (shallowish 2-4 down attack angle and 95mph ss with 7 iron).  Lofts don’t need to be strong as I’m looking for my 7 iron to be my 175-180 club.  Open to something from the big oems or dtc.

Basically I’m looking for something that has some forgiveness without the added launch help something like a t150 provides.  Learned how to play on a set of mp32’s.  Looking for something more forgiving

Currently in a set of pxg 0317 cbs.  They are ok, but still spin launch and spin a touch high.  Backups are tcbs, however spin is an issue with those and they are a club short.

srixon sole didn’t work for me.

It would help if you mentioned what shaft profile you've got installed.

Px 6.0 currently.  Most of the benefits of px 6.5 and not as much work in the long irons.

Modus 130 s/x and tour v 120/130 are others I’ve played to some success recently.

I just see 95mph and wonder if you're not going to see that with nearly any club head given the extra dynamic loft you're seeing. That's going to generate extra spin. You might experiment with means to address that without guffing up your swing. (I'm sure you've likely tried 😄 )

Can't recommend one, though; but maybe some of the resident fitters can help.

I would rather try and address the loft condition if I could.

Similar profile here, though with a slightly lower club head speed. Tried titleist, mizuno and srixon. I went with the zx7, px6.5 shafts. I rarely hit the spinning floater now with the irons. Still launch high, but distance is much more consistent with lower spin.

I have found the zx7 plenty forgiving, but you can blend with zx5 if you want more forgiveness in the longer irons. I blend between 5 and 6. If I did it again, would play a zx7 5-iron and blend in the 4 only.

The v-sole can be a bit polarizing, but I have found it to be a non-issue. Definitely suggest trying it.

Finally, I am in the OG zx7. The main complaint from some was that they didn't spin enough. Which was music to my ears!  I have never hit the mkii, but have seen some say that they spin a little more. So you may want to try the original zx7. Can probably get them for a good deal now that they are 2+ years old.

The i210s in your moniker won't work?  They've absurdly high VCogs, which I thought helped with that sort of thing?  (Maybe it doesn't at all?)

I am not as fast as you, but mine keep my excessive dynamic loft tendencies somewhat under control.  The X100s in them, with that weight and feel are supposed to help too.  Not sure if I believe that, tbh, and I've not looked around at say, the PX LS or C-Tapers of the world.

Is your launch the issue, your spin, or both with your irons?  Spin "might" be moderated with a ball change.  I take it T100s is a no go too?

Edit:  saw the screencap.  A 34° club launching at 21 and a half is a skosh high, I guess.  (If we're trying to limit launch to <0.6*static loft.  Which would be 20.4°.)

I'm not a clubfitter, but 6400 rpm out of a 34° club doesn't look outrageous with 96 of CHS.  Is this off mats, and the actual course side spin is 500-1,000 higher?  I imagine you're holding greens OK.

I take it you absolutely cannot flight them down, hit knockdowns, how ever they're called?

The pings apexed about 130 ft high.  I’ve got that down to about 115-120 with the pxgs.  It think the pings have a ton of weight low and and behind the face to promote launch hence the wide soles.

It’s both, spin is probably the number that needs to be managed more.  High launch with spin under control is ok.

I tend to hit muscle backs with the right launch and spin, just looking for some more forgiveness.

Spin rate is fine but your launch is a touch on the high side. Did you get a look at peak height? Your launch should be in the region of 16-18.

You seem to do well with PXG.  Have you tried their 0311T Gen6?  Seems to be the "more forgiving" players iron in their line, if the CBs aren't working as well for you.  Other comprehensive reviews have shown it launching a hair lower than its peers in that space.

Fun thread.

Ball in in the screen shot is srixon xv.  Normal play left dash or chrome soft x ls.  I would prefer the chrome soft or standard pro v1 but I can suck back 7 iron down with those on most greens I play.

I did not try the t.  We did try the p, but that flew about 15-20 yards further.  Might look to try a t.

Not sure if you’ve investigated a shaft change but that might help flatten your flight.

TXG did a series with Drew Cooper who swings his 6 iron ~105MPH. He said graphite brought down his launch and spin where steel could not.

Two good DTC options from Maltby (Golfworks), in the TS4 and TS1-im.  The most forgiving you will find in a muscle-back, especially toe side of center and low on the face

@Pnwpingi210 Oh lol saw you asked about it in the post above mine haha. I basically just saw the OP and went straight to recommend. If you want a little more detail, I have slightly lower SS (~92) but similar high launch high spin tendencies (which I personally don't mind at all but that is a topic for another thread) and despite my username strongly preferred them to the MP221s. A noticeable degree or two more forgiving and I also thought they felt better too.

Do you play them at stock lofts?

I don't play them, I just demo'd, so they were at stock lofts. I didn't think you were going to get anything without demoing so I was just trying to identify a good candidate that would be worth your time. The LM at the demo day was getting used by someone who had paid for a fitting appointment so I couldn't see numbers but the turf interaction felt extremely neutral (as in would be acceptable to both diggers and pickers) and anecdotally the flight characteristics felt a touch cleaner than the MP221 I was alternating it with.

There are a few lower spinning/launching heads. However, they are stronger lofted. P790 would be my first recommendation as they are pretty low spin. However there are many other options.  Mizuno HM Pro or 225, Cobra Forged Tec, Titleist T200, Callaway Apex, or Wilson D9 Forged.

Oh, that’s no good. The zx5s were perfect for me.

c tapers shafts are great for lowering flight and spin.

thanks for the recommendations.  I hit a couple of head recommended in this thread.

t200 and p770 lowered spin, but fly way too far 185-195.

the jpx tour 923 launched around 18-19 and spin about the same (6.7k) peak height came down about 10 ft which was nice.  The fitter thought hardstepping the px 6.0 might drop another degree and some spin which would be ideal.

What did you think of the forgiveness/feel?

Felt very similar to my mp32’s.  Dispersion was pretty great.

I only hit the 7 iron, but man it frames the ball so well.  Little bit bigger than the mp32 at 7 iron.  I looked at the 4 iron and it’s much more inviting than the mp32.
