How's the Lie?

I played Mizunos 2 degrees up, and then I got some Srixons 1 degree flat. So 3 degrees flat from where I was hitting before. Meaning to bend them, but I've hit them pretty flush. After maybe 50 shots off the mat my 8 iron has a wee bit green on the toe. 

 

Would you guys bother screwing with the lie angle??

What were you fitted into, and how is your shot dispersion compared to the Mizunos?

That picture doesn't show anything useful. Do the label/line test with all your clubs and take pics of the faces.

Sole marks, lie boards, looking at the divot - none of those things are accurate at telling you what might need to be done to the lie angle.   They all focus on what happened AFTER impact - not what's happening at impact.

 

Use the dry erase marker line on the ball test (linked in @rt_charger 's post.)   The labels are nice but you don't need them.  You can read the line right off of the face.

Cool. I'll try that lie trick with the post it and the marker.  It may be trick with my 15 degree inside out swing, but I'll try. 

 

The dispersion on well hit shots is extremely tight.

It wont really be tricky - but if you are that much inside-out and still getting any where near the target line - the effect of the lie angle is pretty negligible even if it is a few degrees out.

It’s all about the ball flight.  Hitting a fade, go more upright.  And vice versa.

No its not

We have to sett line angles correct, since we have a relationship between lie angle and face angle that 1:1 

A closed face angle by 1.0* cause a tilt on the spin axis by 3*
So does a lie angle thats 1.0* upright at impact 

WE have to figure out WHY ball flight becomes fade or draw, is it lie angle or face angle?
If it turns out to be face angle, we DONT adjust lie to fix it. 

On top of that, a lie thats wrong, very often move impact position away from the center of the face, and we loose power transfer to the ball, who influence on ball speed, launch, spin and carry 

So take that ball marker/sharpie test and adjust if needed.

If you still get a unwanted draw or fade, its a FACE angle issue you can fix very easy since we have located and isolated what the problem really is. (check your hands and how you place them, and or grip size)

So the old saying "ball flight dont lie" is really useless, ball flight itself DONT tell us anything but what we saw, it does NOT tell us WHY, and thats what we need to know if we want to change it.

The only real concern is if I'm robbing myself of power and don't really know it.

Check your face impact location with foot powder spray.

 

The only way lie angle will cause you to loose power is if it (and not something else) is causing you to miss the center of the face.  And best chance of avoiding that is to simply use that dry erase marker test.

Same club, same range session.  The face was clean before so this is all dirt from that session.
