Callaway driver adapter setting Q: What if you go -1° and "Draw"?

KMeloney

Recommended Posts

I'm demoing a Paradym Triple Diamond, and I came away from a trackman session with the recommendation that I turn the 9° head down to 8° (and put the heavy weight in the front). On the course, the club is a beast -- but it's also a bit of a handful with the Ventus TR Blue 6-X in it. Inevitably, until I get warmed up a couple holes, I can lose the ball right (pushed -- not sliced). Once I'm warmed up, I still need to make sure I'm getting the head moving through the ball; and when I put a good swing on it, the ball wants to go pretty darn straight. But I really need to be mindful of releasing the clubhead to keep it straight.

I've got to imagine that SOME of the rightward tendency could be from cranking the loft down a degree. If that's true, then what can I expect when I also put the adapter in the "D" setting? Setting it on the ground in that configuration doesn't make the face look any different to me -- but I haven't set it down behind a teed up ball yet, and this weekend is going to be a washout weather-wise, so I wouldn't be able to put it to the test.

What does putting the turned-down loft WITH the "D" setting do to the face? And can I expect that the ball will be less inclined to leak right -- or, can I expect some real draw bias now?

The lie settings (Neutral/Draw) impact lie angle, with draw being more upright. Lie angle is a much smaller player in ball flight at lower lofts, especially when compared to face angle. It is mostly for visual preference and I wouldn’t expect anything if you don’t have a preference visually.

Based on my testing with my Mavrik Max, the draw setting brings the start line a bit more to the left (for me at least).

If I were you I’d give it a shot. I played mine at -1 Draw for a bit and I liked it a lot for low spin pull fades.

I would say MOST of it came from that face angle change - assuming that the tendency wasn't there when the head was set to 9*.   And also assuming that the face impact location tendency didn't shift toward the heel.    Always important to monitor face impact locations during those types of sessions - so I hope you were doing that and not just looking at the raw numbers.

Everyone is different and has to make their own decision - but I've observed that for those that are sensitive to face angle it's usually better in the long run to use hosel adjustments for face angle changes only (shot shape control and consistency) and find other ways to deal with launch/spin issues.  Which is what I'm assuming you were trying to "fix" at that trackman session - either too high spin or launch (or both).

Never hurts to try and see what the lie angle setting does - it should bring it back a little left.   But I wouldn't get my hopes up.  It doesn't really fix the face angle issue and I wouldn't expect to to fully compensate for a face angle problem.    But you never know.

Also couldn't hurt to try to manually close the face a bit (e.g. feel like you're taking a slightly stronger grip at setup).

What he said!....try that, and the issue is most likely solved, since a push to the left is a path inside to out with a face angle square to path, so it seems like you are not able to close it enough after the hosel adjustment for lower loft who opens the face angle about 1.5* depending on lie. If those unwanted push is NOT present when hosel setting is "standard", then it IS a face angle issue you can solve by either ground it and rotate it back to square, or by a stronger grip for the lowest hand, who forces more face closure during the swing.

That Paradym 3D is such a low spin head I have a hard time imagining it spinning enough at 8 degrees but…

Everyone I know including my clubs staff pro and some of the tour pros have had to add a little loft with this driver to keep spin up.

I guess what I’m saying is that if the start line was good at 9 degrees I’d question whether that outweighed spin/launch changes moving to -1.

I do think the upright lie angle in D could help with the start line a little.

Great info, folks. I really appreciate it.

Regarding the tendency with the standard setting (9°), the face looked closed to me on the ground — and with my most common miss being a hook (undoubtedly from stalling my rotation and having my hands race by), the look of a closed face at set-up doesn’t inspire confidence.

I DID last play a few holes with it back in the 9° setting, and my tendency was to get the ball going left. But that might have been due to me pushing my first tee shot really right and compensating for it after.

Since the face looks best to me in the 8° setting, maybe the “D” setting with it will be the secret ingredient. Or maybe I just need to put a better swing on the driver in the stock settings. Lol
