North Central Nebraska Golf - Prairie Club, Wild Horse, etc.

Hey all,

Was digging around for some info about the Prairie Club and I haven't seen any posts in the last few years so I figured I would start a new thread. We have a 12 man golf trip that we do annually, and we are eying the sand hills region for our 2024 trip. Would love some knowledge from y'all who have been there before, if you could help us out with a few of our questions that would be awesome. Thank you!

 - I know the Prairie Club is unlimited golf on 1 course a day, would it be difficult to get on for a second 18 each day? Or are all of the other guests trying to do the same so its backed up on the tee sheet for the afternoon times (2pm ish)? Our group would love to do 36, or even 45 holes a day on each course, then some par 3 after. Do they do tee times in the morning as well, or is it just first come first serve?

 - For travel, what is the recommended route to get there? We are based in Dallas mainly, and I think North Platte is the best airport to use with a connection in Denver? Or are there better options? I'd bet we would get 3 rental cars then to take us from there to Prairie Club. It is a 13 hour drive from Dallas so driving is mostly out of the question

 - Thinking about adding a round at Wild Horse Sunday before our flight back, any other good tracks in the area? We have a potential connection at Sand Hills so we may try for that one of the days as well

 - Would we get bored at the Prairie Club golfing there for 3 days? We may drop it down to just 2 days and get one day on the Dunes and one day on the Pines courses. Food good? Easy to get a table or is it always packed with other guests?

Wednesday fly in, planning on staying at the Prairie Club each night

Thursday - Golf at Prairie Club

Friday - Golf at Prairie Club

Saturday - Golf at Prairie Club

Sunday - Wild Horse Golf then fly out

Thank you for your help!

I can’t speak to many of your questions as I haven’t flown to the area and haven’t spent 3 days there. I would recommend the two full days on property, then consider Bayside in Brule if you are wanting to mix it up. Or reach out to Dismal River, they are private but have a lot of public access opportunities. Wild Horse is great, you won’t regret it.

I travel from CA to that area a lot.  Here are some things to consider:

1.  Prairie Club is AWESOME so doing most if not all of the golf there would be just fine.  Both regular courses are fantastic and their par 3 course is very cool.  The lodging is great - right next to the par 3 and a stone's throw from main clubhouse/restaurant.  It's a perfect venue for a 12 man group.  How they do the multiple rounds each day depends on time during the season and member events, etc.  Call them they will explain.  You won't be hurting for golf.  I think you could easily do 3 days there and not get tired of any of it.  In terms of being crowded for meals, etc... again it depends.  Call them.

2.  Wild Horse is very cool also but be careful about the timing.  It's a 2:45 drive from PC to WH... you will be relatively near N. Platte airport (Lee Bird Field) though - 1/2 hr or so.

3.  Of course you have to play Sand Hills if you can but..please trust me on this - there is no connection that can get 12 guests on Sand Hills during the season.  I doubt eveb a founding member / architect / Masters champion Texan could pull that off.  🙂  Members are allowed 7 guests each visit.  Do you have two members willing to do this with you?  Note also Sand Hills is not the type of place you pop in on for day play (ie one round) either.  Unaccompanied visits require an overnight stay and the members are very very limited as to how many they can do.  And on top of that...it's about 1.5 hours drive from PC.

4.  A more realistic place to try for is CapRock - it is literally right next to PC.  They are very very private also though... but I'd have to believe a bit more doable than Sand Hills just because they are newer.  Work those connections.  🙂

5.  In terms of flights, United (and ONLY United) does do a connection in Denver then on to N. Platte BUT they flights are very limited - typically 1 or 2 per day max and the times are never good.  That is, arrival is usually around 6:30pm and departures are either 6am or 7:30pm (the former sucks, the latter is great).  It's just tough to make this work.  The problem for you coming from Dallas is there's not much of a better way... closest airport with lots of flights would be Denver, and it's a 5.5 hr drive or so to PC from there.

So it's tough to get there.  But once you are there... it is golf heaven.

Appreciate the help! Very detailed so thank you. It sounds like the United flight to north platte is our only option. I’ve heard of people flying into South Dakota and driving down, but that’s also a 3+ hour drive.

Totally agree on the difficulty of Sand Hills too, we completely acknowledge 8 or 12 guests would be next to impossible haha. Probably won’t happen with all of us, but We’re at least going to kick the tires on it and see what happens. If not, hopefully Prairie Club + another course will be sufficient for the trek to get up there. Very glad to hear the great review on PC though.

Thank you!

I would think booking that flight from Denver to NP for 12 is going to be challenging as well. I think the plane only holds maybe 12 people. They’re pretty small. And HIGHLY unreliable, lots of canceled flights.

Do WildHorse, in my opinion, much better than Bayside (again just my opinion there).

But, like MullenBoy said, PC is ample enough if you need to just stay there. It’s been a few years, but the food and accommodations were great.

You can spend tons of extra time just around the greens on the Dunes course, just trying different shots. And the horse course is a blast.

All good, happy to help.  Like I say I go out there a lot.

Shank makes a good point about the Denver - NP flight... it holds 40 as I recall... but books quickly.  Plan way ahead to get all 12 on that.  He's also right they cancel a lot... any type of bad weather and they stay put.  I also agree Wild Horse is way better than Bayside.

Send me a separate message also... maybe I can help with Sand Hills.  It would suck to be that close and not play it.  Just do trust me getting guests on is a large thing.  I can take 7 with me any trip (I am a member) and I can sponsor 4 unaccompanied PER SEASON.  Those 4 can do that once in their lives.  Club rule.  In any case my trips for 2024 are all booked... the larger issue is I can't see a reality where anyone other than Mr. Youngscap himself could accomodate a group of 12.  But I am a relatively new peon national member so yes do kick the tires.  It's worth it.

Just another idea here:

American flies nonstop from Dallas to Sioux Falls, SD.

Landmand is just an hour forty south of Sioux Falls.

Maybe set up the trip flying there, playing Landmand, then Prairie Club then Wild Horse, flying home out of Platte via Denver.

Perhaps more expensive this way but the course itinerary would be pretty sweet.

That's a darn good idea!

Driving distance from Landmand to PC is 4 hours.  2 hours or so down to WH.

Great trip coming from Dallas.  This is a winner.  Only iffy part is getting the UA flight from NP to Denver (then on to Dallas) at the end but as previously discussed those are always problematic.. plan way ahead and hope for good weather.  🙂

Flying into Sioux Falls is a good suggestion but you can also look at Sioux City and maybe also Omaha.  If you fly into SF or SC another really good course on your way down to PC is Tatanka.  Highly recommend it either in addition to Landmand or as a substitute if you can't get on Landmand.

I have visited PC a number of times but all were pre-Covid.  It might be my favorite destination since we could easily play 36 holes a day while also taking a nice break during the middle of the day (lunch, shower, nap).  Not sure how crowded it has become recently but if you play during the summer you have a lot of daylight.

Thank you for your help!

I've played Prairie Club once or twice every year for the last 5+ years.

If you don't fly into Denver + North Platte, here would be my recommendations (in order). I've driven all of these routes.

2) Rapid City. 3:30 drive to Prairie Club. Nice scenic drive as well.

3) Sioux Falls. 4:30 drive. Mostly interstate(80-85MPH).

4) Sioux City. 4:15 drive. Alot of two lane, 60mph roads. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, there's some scenery along this route, but nothing worth booking this route for. This route is going to seem an hour longer for the driver than #3.

5) Omaha. 5:30 drive. Even more two lane driving than #4.

I would never do 4/5 if 2/3 was an option.

Now of course if you have other courses you want to play along the way, this can change the ranking.

Landmand, Tatanka, Wild Horse, Bayside. I've played all of these.

I'd spend two days at the Prairie Club and then do your last day at Wild Horse. I wouldn't even try to tack on any of these other courses unless you're willing to extend your trip by 1-2 days.

It's easy to get a second tee time for the day assuming you book your lodging/golf early in the year. If you book it later, you are lessening your chances however should still be fairly easy to get a time, it just won't be your preferred times. They are very used to doing morning tee times and then afternoon tee times for 5-6 hours later.

You're not going to get bored in three days at the Prairie Club unless relaxation, good food, good drinks and wide open spaces bore you.

The food is great, you can book your dinner reservations with the restaurant staff when you are on-site. They have tables that can accommodate your entire group.

I have no idea how you guys feel about a little road time (especially given there’s 12) but you could fly into GCK, it’s a quick AA flight twice a day from DFW. Play Buffalo dunes, maybe get on at southwind, head north just under 4 hrs to wild horse and then end up at prairie club. The driving is probably not ideal for you guys but saves the flight to Denver and a questionable connecting flight you’re liable to get stuck with a cancellation. Getting home might take creativity but if you’re flexible it would be a neat trip. Again, probably not ideal but a suggestion nonetheless.

Not sure of the timing of the flights, but you can also fly direct (2hrs to Wildhorse, 4hrs to Prairie Club) into Grand Island on American Airlines from DFW.

Given the hassle and uncertainty of connections, etc. you may just want to fly to Omaha and drive from there even though it's a long ways (5 1/2 hrs).

I don't think you guys need to pair in any other courses and would enjoy Prairie Club for three days. You'd be playing one course two days and the other one day. Given all the driving your group may appreciate staying put. There's a decent little companion course in Valentine as well called Frederick Peak. If you have an in at CapRock Ranch that is truly the play since it's right there.

Otherwise, incorporating Wildhorse is a great option if able. A great value still even with higher pricing, but keep your expectations in check. Dismal River as stated earlier is fairly attainable. The courses are finally in good shape again after some issues and it recently sold yet again.

I appreciate it! Great intel. For the guys flying in, I think we are leaning towards Grand Island over North Platte airports. It seems like Grand Island would be a little more reliable than North Platte? plus it is direct from DFW which is huge.

We unfortunately were only able to get the Prairie Club for 2 days, they booked up that fast - and I was on it the day they opened. So that opens up the Saturday of our trip, which we will either do a full day at Wild Horse, or I may reach out to Dismal River.

Grand Island and North Platte both VERY small airports. Direct (as you know) more reliable, but again ... for another 1 1/2 hrs of driving Denver or Omaha might be the play for more flight options, etc and result in an earlier arrival? Of course that's personal preference as well. Lot of driving either way 🙂

But you won't be dealing with a lot of traffic ...

It's not super easy to get on CapRock Ranch ... I think you can get on Dismal however and likely do both courses there in one day. Wildhorse certainly a very solid public course but Dismal River likely gives you more of that Nebraska Sandhills feel and away from it all feeling with way more elevation change.

One thing I will say ... if coming from the South up to Prairie Club make sure and take Nebraska Highway 97 from just North of North Platte all the way to Prairie Club. Google Maps may route you up US Highway 83 to save you some minutes but Highway 97 will definitely give you a better true taste of the Nebraska Sandhills. If you end up at Dismal River you'll go that way anyhow but Highway 97 will take you past Sand Hills Golf Club turnoff if you want to stop and take a picture just off the highway with the modest sign.

Also will note ... if you have a head pro he may be able to get you on Ballyneal in NE Colorado which might make flying into Denver an easier choice as well.

Bayside near Ogallala, Nebraska is another decent public offering when coming from the West. I don't love it overall but it's certainly an interesting course ... back 9 better than the front. Clubhouse not up to a great standard but intriguing 18 holes not super far behind Wild Horse.

Wow, great info! Thank you so much! Making us very excited to visit Nebraska for the first time (for most of us). The hardest thing I’m trying to figure out is our group of 8(maybe 12), is ~4 are flying and the rest are driving, so I’m trying to figure out how we link up routes and times and all - your info is super helpful! So many good options - we are definitely going to do that last day at Ballyneal, dismal River or Wild Horse. I think Dismal would be awesome but it’s almost far away from the lodging options

I'd say Ballyneal would be the hardest to get on, but if one of you has a membership at a decent private club it may be fine. Dismal is in the midst of a lot of changes right now, but in general I don't think it's a hard get. One of your 12 may even have a connection through someone to get on easier. There are quite a few members. You could stay on site likely if they aren't too busy.

If you guys are determined to play an additional course aside from your time at Prairie Club, the easier option is do Wildhorse ... especially if your crew that's flying decides to fly home from Grand Island to Dallas.

I always tell my friends that visit that you really need three total trips to play what you need to in Nebraska.

Also keep in mind if you do end up playing at Dismal or Bayside or Ballyneal that you'll be dealing with time changes. Dismal, Bayside, Ballyneal, DENVER all mountain time zone. All the rest are central. Prairie Club is BARELY in the Central time zone.

This has caused issues before for groups that leave Dismal to go up to CapRock Ranch or Prairie Club in that you lose an hour because you go back into Central time zone.

We have golf Thursday and Friday booked at Prairie Club, so Saturday is what we are trying to fill. Wild Horse is definitely the easiest, but it could be cool to try for Dismal River - I just don't know how easily they could accommodate 8 or 12 unaccompanied guests on a Saturday. Those are pretty much our main two options.

If we did Ballyneal, we would do it Sunday most likely - and just do it for the guys driving to the Denver airport. It doesn't make sense for the guys driving back to Dallas to go out of their way to Ballyneal and pile on the hours in the car.

You're right about the three trips, because we were even trying to squeeze in Landmand for example, but that is just so far out of the way unless you're doing a very long road trip. And thank you for the heads up about the time change, we would've neve realized.

Thanks again for the very detailed info!

You're not getting 12 or even 8 unaccompanied out at Ballyneal in season. Members are only allowed to send a max of 4 out unaccompanied and only Sun-Thu. Like every other top private course, the membership is making full use of the facilities and they have a waiting list that isn't even taking new names, so there isn't a lot of room for unaccompanied play these days. You would have had a much better chance 6 years ago.

They pretty much ignore requests from the general public now. Without a Ballyneal member or a pro at a top club, your best bet for a foursome would be to have your pro call a week or two ahead and hope they happen to for some reason be very empty that upcoming Sunday (unlikely).

That is very good to hear!  With all the ownership changes it seemed from afar that DR was on thin ice.  Great to hear it's solid.  It is a great place for sure.

Of course this sucks for people thinking they can just walk on, but oh well.  It's a private club.  🙂
