Ryder Cup Broken... here's the fix

Shayne Ryan in GD had a good article that the blowout home-team wins are simply because both sides have savvy captains equally matched teams but modern tour pros aren't used to 50,000 angry fans heckling and taunting them for 4 days. That's why the visitors nearly always lose and big-time. Ryan thinks there's no fix, but there is, and a simple one from other team sports.... HOME AND AWAY! Yep, play a two day weekend match in America morning and afternoon four balls where all 12 players must play in the four balls (eliminate foursomes as Ryan says analytics show that format statistically is producing lopsided results and it's not really modern golf, anyway) and then singles matches and then next weekend same thing in Europe (and reverse that order the next matches 2 years hence). 

 

You're selling twice as many tickets, so double the revenue and Bob's your uncle, cumulative score wins. So even getting blown out by 6 points away is far from over!

A Ryder Cup takes almost 2 years to organise, set up, promote and then host.

 

The scale is immense.

And why in the world would one want to eliminate foursomes? It is the hardest, leave your ego at the door type of golf. One has to be a pretty complete, balanced human being to perform there at this level. It is the ultimate display of team golf and the best telling sign of team quality.

Removing foursomes is a laughable suggestion for a TEAM GOLF COMPETITION!

Not even sure how you'd even think of removing foursomes from the schedule, it's the format that most golf clubs use themselves around the world for team competitions, it's about the only team event in the schedule these days, fourballs is basically more individual than a team, and the last day is just a straight shootout.

 

If you were to change it, i'd say you'd be better off having all players compete in foursomes morning and fourballs afternoon, at least that way you get a whole team vs team each day, rather than 4 players from each side sitting out the matches each time.

He lost me when he said the US had a savvy captain.  The last truly savvy US captain may have been Ben Hogan.  As for the rest (save one or two), I've seen little league travel baseball coaches with more savvy.  And it's not even close.

In all seriousness, I do think the Ryder cup is under a bit of pressure. It only is fun if both parties treat it like it matters. And based on recent history I sometimes have doubts that it is being with the same intensity on both sides of the pond. Kudo's for Sheffler, Homa and JT.

 

But I saw a lot of US behaviour that appeared to be careless. Koepka, Fowler, Morikawa, Burns, Cantly, Xaufelle, Clark, even Spieth I got the impression that the care wasn't quite there. It should hurt like s*** when you loose.

 

It almost seems like a fun family outing every 2 years, and winning it could be a nice icing on the cake. 

 

And what is the fun in that for a spectator?  To see a side that cares and would go to extremes to win it, competing with a side that basically decides not to play. Because if you don't play you can't loose.

IMO what has watered down the Ryder Cup is the President's Cup, but one of these years the International squad is going to go deeper that six players and give the US a run for their money

That's an idea from someone that has zero experience in planning, sponsors, money, logistics, etc. 

 

Just take the loss, next one when America blows out Europe the US fans will act like this is the greatest thing ever until next event in Europe. Rinse and repeat.

The answer is that world ranking means nothing at the Ryder Cup if you're not playing well. Play better and the wins will take care of themselves. 

 

Prior to 1985, the U.S. dominated the Ryder Cup but the quality of European players has drastically gotten better over the years. Not sure why anyone today wouldn't expect the Euros to win from time to time. 

 

All this talk of pay-for-play, team room dissension, wrong captain's picks, Euro team being more united, etc is just static. No one said anything when the Euros got dusted at Whistling Straits. They just didn't play well - end of story.

i think playing in hostile territory once every 2 years is fine. It just makes a visiting team winning all the more satisfying.

 

Changing things because of home/away advantage would be silly.

I like it, I'm fine with the home team winning if that's how it plays out, good for the players, good for the fans. And if the away team manages to win, even more impressive, great storyline. Euros whooped on your US guys, and in 2 years, y'all can try and whoop on them on your home turf. 

 

We gotta wait til Presidents cup to even see ours guys compete like this.

Yeah what a joke thread. imagine telling rahm scheffler rory etc they need to plan a back to back weekend ryder cup in two different continents. they have lives outside of golf they arent just mules we beat down for our entertainment, even if that is whats happening. EVery player on the teams would tell this idea to pound sand

Not just that but the fans too, why should one country get the finale and celebration and the other just get nothing? There definitely wasn't a shortage of US fans in Rome and I'm sure there will be plenty at Bethpage next Ryder Cup.

Most of the American players hadn't played competitive golf for 5 weeks.  Would any of them have entered a Major Championship having not played competitively for 5 weeks?  They say all the right things, but actions speak louder than words.  The Europeans are just more prepared to play because they put more work in going into it.  The Americans were obviously not sharp in Italy.  It's not something you can turn on and off like a faucet.  The truth is that they treat it like an exhibition and not a serious event that they prepared for.

What a terrible take. There should be more foursomes, not less. It's the best team game in golf. Maybe practice it or learn how to play it more often?

 

And home and away is a bad idea logistically.
