Ryder Cup ... has it 'Jumped the Shark'?

I feel like it did years ago.  Like I said in another thread, at this point I think it should be revamped entirely which should include dissolving the worthless Presidents Cup and figuring out how to turn this into some sort of worldwide event. I think it's a pretty big money maker tho so doubt anything will be done.

My problem with the Ryder Cup is as followed:

1. It's a made for TV money grab with free labor, to fund other golf events.

2 Europe is sore losers and sore winners. If they lose they whine for two years, if they win they gloat for two years with television specials, bragging, etc...

If you note the USA won at Whistling Straights and the fact was hardly mentioned in two years. You can look for minstrels to sing songs about the EU win Rome.

3. You see the same Captains and vice captains in the RC and Prez Cup.

~Just my opinion of course.

Europe are sore losers? have you had a read of the posts since team america lost? from a complete neutrals point of view it is america who are renown for being poor losers, the whole world knows it maybe just not that common of a fact where you're from.

just my opinion of course

It was a serious turn off this year with the captain's picks.  I get that Keegan Bradley isn't part of the "A" crowd on the PGAT but he should've been picked along with probably Lucas Glover considering his recent form. And do JT and Speith really need each other that badly? I'm a vet and as American as they come but I found myself rooting against JT/Speith.... two players I generally root for.

Also, the PC is complete overkill and unnecessary.

The past few matches have started to get the feel of WWE. Lots of hand wringing and contrived controversy.

“Oh no, someone celebrated too much after a putt”, “Oh no, fans cheered when I hit it in the water. Th hurts my feelings”.

Yea, get back to golf instead of the WWE or Desperate Houswives feel. Not everything in life needs to be a fight.

I guess I'm in the minority then as I love the RC and thoroughly enjoyed this year's version. Completely changed my sleep schedule to watch all the matches haha

I had fun with it too. I don't play the dancing game between 4 different networks/subscriptions to watch golf, but I watched the matches that streamed on the RC website and it was pretty solid.

I get all the critiques, but the coverage of PGA tournaments have gotten so horrible, it's nice to get to just watch these guys play without some old timer blah blah blahing in a booth somewhere when they could be showing shots. I know it's big business, but it still at least sorta feels like a more pure test/battle. I wish we got more match play in general, it's a lot more fun to watch than stroke play IMO.

Curious how some feel.  I kind of feel like the Ryder Cup has 'Jumped the Shark'.   It feels very 'gimmicky', overblown critique/analysis, tricked up courses, and maybe most of all 'Dramatic'.

Any thoughts?

I think the nationalism has gone too far.  Just look at some of the responses in this and other threads.  This is a friendly competition, not a life-or-death battle to the end.  I really hope that Bethpage is not a complete 5h!tshow, but I'm not holding my breath.  I am still trying to get my head around the people with that attitude (and before anyone asks, I did wear a uniform and maybe that is why I don't understand why there are so many "win or die" attitudes).

I think it was the "war at the shore" that started us down the current path.

I agree about bethpage,I think it will be hijacked by non traditional golf fans who some how see yelling abuse and being obnoxious as the way to help their team win.such a shame as both teams have incredible golfers and that's what we should be celebrating

I'm really in the minority then.  I enjoyed it and I usually don't pay any attention to it.

And I think a lot of those lamenting the "bad behavior " are either young or have short memories regarding past Cups.

I loved it as well, timezone differences meant I was up all night watching but I really enjoyed it.

My takes were that both teams had awesome players but as we all know the margins of playing good golf are so small.

I also enjoyed the emphasis the course put on driving accuracy, miss the fairway and you were in trouble.

Now that the RC is over only a few more early morning starts with the rugby world cup, then back to normal

Singles need to be played on Friday and Saturday as part of one of the sessions. Sunday should be all team play. Also, why do we dominate the President’s Cup every time but can’t figure this out?

When USA wins at bethpage will you have the same thoughts ?

Not sure whether (as the OP said) it jumped the shark, but something seemed off.

It may well be just me. But I'm sort of a golf fanatic, and will watch pretty much anything that is on (or at least have it on in the background). Have found the PC and RC to be quite often entertaining. This sort of odd mash-up of serious golf with a silly season atmosphere.

I don't know why, but this year I just couldn't get very interested. Had it on, tried to watch, but it just didn't draw me in like it has in past years.

May be in part because (as has been mentioned) due to media coverage. Absurdly over-hyped and over-analyzed and over-speculated. Which seems to get worse every year it is played. Too much much.

May also be (as has also been mentioned) that the line between the US and EU has become so blurred it is now almost non-existent. Anyone with the chops now simply has a PGAT card, whether they are from the US or EU (or for that matter, Asia). Almost need to take a minute to think that Rory and Rahmbo are "European" golfers. I mean, with a couple of exceptions, the players were the same that I see every week during the season - this tourney just looked like a normal PGAT event, just with different formats.

But as I think about what I'm writing, I realize that I'm trying to find some reason, some excuse. Bottom line is, I have no idea why, but it seemed just really stale or something. I couldn't bring myself to care - either who won individual matches or what continent won the Cup. But as I said, that might just be me.

For me it never gets old.  I love the Ryder Cup and perhaps this past one opened up some new rivalries.  It's been a little too buddy buddy lately since they're pretty much all friends on Tour.  With the exception of Bruce it seems most folks just gets along.  I'm looking forward to Bethpage and the wonderful fans of New York.  😁  The matches of the 80s and 90s just oozed extreme level heated competition.

Enjoyed watching this year and have only been to one ryder cup (Paris). But being at a sporting event where 99% of the fans are favoring one side, combined with excessive rudeness towards the away team makes it slightly unapealing. Can't even imagine what it'll be like at Bethpage. It's just a spectacle and a money grab for the tours that provides some entertainment, but glad it's not every year.

It’s the money that has taken the edge of it and mostly all modern sport for that matter.

my first reaction to Cantlays (alleged) protest at not being paid, was one of total umbrage….. how dare he behave like nothing more than a prostitute…… but then yeah he does have a point at the vast sums made off the back of his play, and he’s expected to buy into the passion……..it’s the corporate bollocks that is souring the milk for sure.

oh and have we not evolved from deriding people for their physical attributes? Is someone really superior if they are taller and can pound you with their large American hands? Maybe

is this the real reason Brian Harmon was much maligned ……because he isn’t 6ft tall?

Every successful professional sporting event on the planet exists solely on it's entertainment & commercial value, and the RC has that in spades.

Every professional sporting event on the planet is a exhibition, but all of a sudden the word takes on new meaning because why?

I could care less about the drama people want to make out of hats and money.

The NBA & NFL are loaded up with greedy attention whores who create more drama in a single day than the RC has in decades, but we hold golf to a different standard?

Complete hypocrisy.
