Andy Bean. RIP

[Yuck]

I just read that Andy Bean had passed away.  He was an extremely talented player who never quite reached his potential because of injury.  As a youngster in Florida I had a chance to play with many future tour players including future major winners, but none were as impressive as Andy Bean.  He went to my High School,  but was about 6 years older than me.  The kids my age looked up to him, and he would still golf with us “Kids” when he was home from U of F now and then.  Only positive things to say on how he treated “the little people” after he had made it.  Condolences to his Family and Friends.

Thank you for posting this @Yuck.  Andy and I were born in the same area of NW Georgia (he was a few years younger).  When we crossed paths while I was caddying, it gave us an instant connection.  He was a gentle soul and will be missed by many, especially me. 

 

For those of us well into the back 9's of our life, it is a reminder to hug your loved ones and call the ones that aren't close enough to hug.  Rest Easy, Big Red.....

I had the pleasure of meeting him, he was a big man and very nice. The local course removed a couple of trees across the lake from the back tees and it is called the bean gap, not many folks could use it (accuracy) or even reach with modern equipment.

Watched Andy and Hubert Green playing a practice round at St Andrews many moons ago. During a delay on the tee Hubie invited a young lad ( about 7) on to the tee and gave him his driver and teed up a ball for him, The young lad made good contact and got great applause whilst his elder brother stood watching slack jawed. Andy then dropped a new ball into the brothers pocket whilst he was still awestruck. The look of joy on both boys faces remain with me to this day. Andy and Hubie came across as a couple of real gents and I rooted for them from that day on. Really sorry to hear of his passing. RIP Andy Bean

I grew up playing there.  LHS class of ‘78.  It was our home course.  It was an only an 18 hole track back then.  A lot of good players played there, including the Florida Southern Kids.  (Marco Dawson, Lee Janzen & Rocco Mediate were all on the same team in the early 1980’s).

 

I also remember the best greasy cheeseburgers ever in the grill room.

That is cool, I have played with Rocco at Huntington Hills years ago. Are you still in the area?

 

We don't play Cleveland very often as it gets pretty crowded when the birds arrive. But in the summer we will go out there when we can get a early tee time.

 

We are close to the same age, I was class of 77 but in R.I.

I remember at the 85 Heritage on #14, he had just hit one in the water, and as he was walking to the green, he looked right at me and said, “ It’s not that damn difficult!” I don’t think I said anything. He was huge, and I didn’t want to get him any angrier than he was.

So sad to hear. He was a great player and even better guy. Had an opportunity to spend some time with him and work on his clubs when I was in Boca. He came into my store needing to get his 3wd reshafted. He had a Fujikura Pro 95 X that had broke. He asked if I had the shaft and was shocked when I told him I did. Long story short, I reshafted his 3wd on the spot and he bought the other 4 shafts I had. He tried to give me a $100 tip that I refused to take. So he invited me to dinner at Tom Jenkins. What an awesome guy! Every year after that, he would take me to dinner during the Champions Tour event. R.I.P. big guy.

Andy Bean was The Man in college golf while I was at Georgia Southern in the mid & late 1970s. He won the Chris Schenkel tournament shooting a 63 on day 2 that was (& maybe still is?) the course record at Forest Heights. His scorecard was framed & hung on the wall for years. It was rumored that one year he tried to carry the lake on #9, didn't make it & bit part of the cover off a golf ball...

I am reminded of Andy Bean every time I tee it up at the Kapalua Plantation course, and visit the locker room.  His scorecard showing a Double Eagle/Albatross on #18 was remarkable.  Over 650yd hole, Andy holed out his second shot.  One helluva man and golfer...RIP.

I was fairly new to the game at the time and a Navy buddy gave me a ticket for the GHO.

 

I was a Andy Bean fan at the time and I followed him for a couple holes at the old Wethersfield course in 1982.

 

I he looked a hell of a lot taller than 6' 4" when he was standing around the other pros.

Saw him at the Memorial a few times and he seemed a giant.

 

Jack Nicklaus always had nice things to say about him.
