Maltby Collection a bit confusing

Streuner

Recommended Posts

Hi there Maltby Lovers.

i have seen the latest Maltby thread and was checking them at GolfWorks but to me it seems a bit overload.
where is the real difference between all those iron heads such as TS1 IM / TS3 / TS4 / TE+  for sure there are minor differences in the lofts and in the MPF but to be realistic, what real difference is there besides the optics

thank you for helping me out

It's a valid point.  Not to mention they are still selling the TS1 and TS2 until they are gone.

The TS1M is a hollow players iron so I think that stands alone, and compares with the P770/790 type of iron.  The TS4 is for the forged blade person. The TE+ was a surprise to me.  It seems to cover the same niche as TS3.

The original TE, actually starting as the M-05 or something else before that, sold for years.  So they probably figured why not roll it out again in updated form.

I see the TS1M and TS4 as better matches for the higher swing speed golfers with better swings, and the other two as better matches for average speeds and swings.  That's just generalizing.  And if like me someone is slow with an average swing, or any speed with an erratic swing, the KE4 Max is probably the ticket.

I'm with you on the TE+ and TS3. There doesn't appear to be much difference here.

The difference appears to be in the “Actual VCOG” which correlates to the MPF.

I understand this reflects a lower COG which increases launch angle and decreases spin.  A lower COG in my personal frame of reference means it “helps” people who have difficultly applying the speed and technique to get enough spin on the ball to get it in the air consistently.  Which is practically everybody.

Whether the gradations used by Maltby mean anything in the real world I have no idea.

The TE+ has marginally less, constant offset and the black DBM version just looks cooler.

The DBM does look cool.  Do you have any experience how that finish feels or wears?  I have built a TS3 8 iron and it both looks and feels great.

The differences are so small, though. I can't believe they would make a big difference in practice.

The DBM finish is indestructible.  The DBM finish will feel a bit harder than the chrome.

The TS3 uses tungsten to move the COG lower and towards the toe in the longer irons.  The TE+ does not have any tungsten in the head.

TE+ has a constant offset.  TS3 has progressive offset

TS3 has a satin chrome finish which is shinier.  TE+ has the duller pearl chrome finish and the aforementioned DBM option.

The KE4 Max is cast 17-4 with adjustable weighting to give club builders a lesser expensive clubhead that can be built to suit a wide range of players.

What do you think the TS3 would compare to big brand wise?

I have the TS3 and the closest feeling I’ve had to them was a set of Miura forged irons I tried out at a fitting. They have that similar feeling where a good impact feels like you’re hitting the ball with a 1000lb anvil and it just melts. The Miuras were better but not by a wide enough margin to justify costing about 5x as much.

I also have the DBMs (not this newest release) and they’re really unique and fun irons to hit. I think they may be better suited to drier, firmer course conditions, hence buying the TS3.

Has somebody trying to compare TS1 im to TS4 and TS3?
TS 1 im is a players distance iron but beside from this, would you build a mix set with TS 4 or TS 3 irons.?
how does TS4 is feeling in direct comparison to TS3, the lofts are a touch weaker and TS4 should play a bit softer?

The combo set that makes the most sense in my opinion, is the TS4 with the TE+.  The "mid" AVCOG of the TS4 matches up well with the lower AVCOG of the TE+ for longer irons.  They both have the "pearl" finish and the top-lines and profile shapes are a close match.  In addition, the sound/feel off the faces are very close in traditional one piece forgings, whereas the TS1-IM will be different in that regard.

The TS3 has a bit different profile look and a "satin chrome" finish that has more shine to it
