How would you design your dream irons.

Cost doesn't matter it doesn't need to make sense it doesn't need to fit an entire group of other golfers.

I'm just curious how you'd design your dream set of irons? Not for all time but for you personally going forward right now imagine you could design them now and play your best current version of golf in 3-6 months.

What features, tech design do you feel would make you happiest?

What loft would they have, how would the soles work? How would the iron design help you play your best golf?

I'd clone a brand new set of 962b's.

Simple. Mp5 would do just fine. Buy what works. Lots on wrx go full custom build and sell week 3. Im back with J33 Cb because i sold last set 8ish years ago.

So a New set of J33 Cb is Ok too🤭

I'm a simple man.  I will take my i525s in head shape, loft, sole width, and profile, but add in the feel of a well struck Srixon ZX7 MKII. My only gripe with these is the rather crisp feel, but the performance is there so I can't complain too much if I get on the green and closer to the hole than I did before.  My favourite iron ever is the Nike Vapor Pro Combo, so I would also just take that in an updated form.

For me who values durability over feel, I would make a set of irons in the shape of Mizuno MP-33s or 1999 Hogan Apex blades cast out of 431 Stainless Steel in a satin finish.  The feel would almost be good as forged but would be a hell of a lot more durable and the stain finish wouldn't dull as it is already dull in the first place.

Having them cast in nickel would closely duplicate the forged feeling but is prone to nicks from bag chatter over time.

I also would love to see the TM 2005 TP irons in that cast in stainless steel too.

I'm pretty close to exactly what I would consider my dream irons with my G30's.  My minor tweaks would be to make the top line a little thicker maybe even square it off a little like Big Bertha irons, make it so I can't see any of the back/bottom of the club from the address position in the 4/5 irons, no badging or anything that isn't etched into the iron in the cavity other than the weight port, and either the old tumble finish from the Eye days or a satin finish.  Install their proprietary CFS regular flex shafts cut to the G20 standard lengths which are a little shorter than current standard lengths then add on my preferred Gripmaster kidd leather grips.  So if anyone from Ping is lurking I don't think that's too much to ask😁

Going outside the box for a players CB design that's forgiving like a GI:

- Low CGs, inline with my average impact positions on each iron

- High MOI

- 26° 5 iron to 46° PW.  Include 50° GW

- Mid-long blade length long irons to mid length short irons

- Low offset

- Short hosel helping keep CG low

- Heavy weighting on low toe and low heel (like the Cobra F9 below)

- CG directly on the face of all the irons for zero gear effect

- Iron build progression like Mizuno Pro 223 going from thin face multi material pocket CB long irons to single piece forged 1025 steel mid and short irons (all with the low toe/heel weighting)

- Match sole width and grind of my Mizuno MP-54s

- Straight-ish, mid-thin topline with sharp-ish toe

- Clean no badge cavity. Chrome like an MP

- Like a players CB version of the Cobra F9 SGI, crossing with Bridgestone J40 DPC, Mizuno MP-54 and 223, but with a short-ish hosel.. 😆. Gotta get to work in CAD..

It may be an unpopular opinion on this forum... but something similar to the Zing 2's.  Keep all the offset.

It's such a unique design that is both super forgiving and has a thin center sole. It also has a finish that lasts the test of time. I wonder how much more forgiving it can get with tungsten toe and heel weights.

As for my dream irons…. @joostin basically nailed all the engineering points, but honestly I think I’d just take my J40 DPCs and shorten the blade length a tiny bit and raise the CG a tick.

They would be T100 or T150, and I would fill in the 4-GW numbering with 3-PW. I would change nothing about the actual irons.

Qi35 15* - Speeder 757 Stiff

I have not played enough irons to know what my dream irons are but… Behold the musings of a poor iron player with odd equipment preferences:

- Hollow body blade-ish looking irons. Preferably some variable face thickness tech for consistent ball speed over a bigger area. Maybe progressively hotter towards the longer irons. Thicker face in the short irons.
- Straight-ish line coming off the hosel to the toe (not rounded as many are in the short irons).

- Plenty of perimeter weighting, thin top line not required.
- Minimal Offset
- Longer blade length but not too tall. (Low profile you can say?)
- Progressively lower CG in the longer irons, but higher in the short irons. (
5i to PW lofts 22, 26, 30, 34, 39, 44.
- Slightly flatter

- Slightly heavier

- None of that groove design that reduces spin in the long irons. If anything, the slight opposite.
- Pre-worn Leading edge

- higher bounce

- Thinner sole (not thin) moving towards mid in the long irons

Basically, irons that nobody would buy so nobody will make them.

I don't really care about clubheads, I just want Aldila to do a special run of the OG RIP Tour SLT 115 R so I can get enough to last all the future irons sets I want to build!

Every set of irons purchased were at this time, thought of as a dream set.  But only five sets stand out because eye candy and specs feed my madness.  Being more of a sweeper, they have sleek toplines, small heel to toe, more traditional lofts, minimal cambered soles, not too blunt leading edges, low bounce and shafts that do what they are told.  Since 2k, those that made the cut are MacGregor 1025 MBs, Titleist 670 MBs, 620 MBs, 620 CBs and new T100.

An exact replica of the '99 Hogan Apex made from 8620 carbon steel., by PING. That way the best blade ever would last 3-4 times as long as the Endo Forgings do.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.
