Broken Graphite Design shaft re use for..?

Streuner

Recommended Posts

Hi.

during the past season I was unlucky and my complete golf bag fell down from the rack a t the club house. The driver shaft broke directly on the adapter. My insurance covered the damage and I got a shaft fitting and I have no problems at all….

now it is off season and I did start to sort out some older stuff. The shaft is still ok, just a good 1.5 inches shorter right now. The label: accuracy and distance starts 2.5 inches away from the broken part. The length would be good for a 3 wood right now. Would it make sense to try this out, or is the tip section to much shortened right now? The web page of pro choice golf shafts tells me, the tip section is 3inches long

Otherwise this stick would be good for supporting plants in the garden?

if its still able to be tipped 1.5" then yes its a good candidate for FW wood however, its light so unless you are OK with that, may not be the best fit for you. Most folks will progress 10g in the FW woods from driver.

You certainly can try it as a FW, and slap 10g of lead tape under side of the shaft with tape, bit lower then the grip to get a feel for a heavier overall weight and that same shaft profile.

Otherwise off to BST if it doesn't fit you to find someone to give it a home at a price to move would be my move 🙂

Assuming there was no tipping before the adapter was installed, you should be right about at the max amount of tipping - so that's probably not an issue.   If there was any amount of tipping before the adapter install (e.g. TM factory install) then you're going to be past the max safe amount of tipping.

It is possible that damage extends further than you can see - so there is still some risk.

The main downside is it will play noticeably stiffer in anything except maybe a 7 wood - and the shaft weight will likely be a bit too light for a fairway if that was a good shaft weight for your driver.   Now whether that's a problem or how much is something only you can answer.   No one here can tell you that.

I am sure there was a tip trimming before because the „accuracy and distance“ decal is not at the same spot like it is on my AD HD shaft at home. This one was uncut at the time I got it.
I guess this decal, that is at all of the Tour AD lineup shaft series, is always the same distance away from the tip.

Should be okay for a fairway wood - IMO a 5 or 7 wood.

If you want to sell it off let me know, I re-home all sorts of misfit graphite design shafts!

Sounds charming but I am situated in Switzerland, I guess the shipping would be expensive

This thread might help you figure out how much total tipping has been done.    If it turns out to be anything more than 1-3/4" - then the shaft is toast.  Well - really it's more like more than 3" minus the bore depth.  I theory you could do a blind bore install with only 1" of shaft inserted into the bore if you're swing speed isn't too high - which would increase max safe tipping to 2".   But that wouldn't fix any of the other issues - too stiff and too light.

If not suitable for use in a fairway wood, use it as a flashier version of the DG S500 driver shaft I've been using as an alignment stick for the last 35 years.

There are some older hybrids that are 0.335 tip (Cobra DWS for one, I'm sure there are others)  I don't have an exact measurement, but I have one that I have reshafted a couple times and the hosel bore seemed pretty shallow.  Not much over an inch from what I recall.  Those were made as low as a 16° version.  That could make the shaft you have useable and would help with the shaft being "too stiff", but certainly wouldn't help with the "too light".  The lead tape on the shaft as mentioned above would be an option then.  If you like to tinker you could potentially have a pretty cool setup on the cheap.
