Help Removing Stuck PXG Backweight

JD3

Recommended Posts

I purchased a PXG Gen 4 gap wedge online separately to go with my Gen 4 irons which were ordered directly from PXG. The irons swingweight around D1.5. The gap came in heavier at D6, which is noticeable. I ordered the wrench (example below) to see what weight was in there so I can order a new, lighter one consistent with my irons. The weight came out of my irons easily with the new tool, and they're 7.5 grams. Unfortunately the gap wedge weight is stuck, it allows me to move it in the tighter direction and makes the "click" sound, but it moves not at all in the other direction. I even erred on the side of stripping it, but nothing happens except for the wrench popping out. Would appreciate any thoughts on removing it, short of sending it to PXG. Thanks

You will need a small bottled propane torch and about 1 minute of heat on the back of the weight will dissolve the red loctite and then you will be able to use the wrench to remove it.  The small butane torches are simply inadequate.

I agree with some heat, but don't put a torch on the weight for a full minute, or you may damage something.  Try 15 seconds or so.  If still stuck, try a another 10 seconds longer.  And get a proper torx bit that you can put in a wrench.  Not the silly torque wrench thing.

I can tell you from first hand experience, that the heat on the weight did not work for me.  I put the heat on the face where the weight is.  That is how I got mine out.  I went thru multiple wrenches until I borrowed the PXG one from a fitter I know.

I think Gen 4 is easier the the 0317's.  The sugar daddy ones game out much easier then the 0317.

Good luck

Ah ok the red loctite. Never heard of it but I did notice some red fluid on the newer irons i removed the weights from. Those clubs are less than a month old so I assume it hasn't fully dried yet. Should I put some new loctite in the irons i took the weight off? Will it effect performance or stability if I don't ?

I couldn’t get mine out and resorted to just using lead tape. Saved me about $60 too.

I got so frustrated with PXG I sold all my gear and moved on.  Have 3 sets still to move..

They tend to build their stuff with light swing weights. The main reason I went with PXG so I can adjust the swing weights as I prefer to swap out and do my own builds.  My buddy who is a rep said they had issues with the weights coming lose and changed the loctite that goes in.

Happier with my P7MB.

changing those large weights in the back is really easy with the right tools and process.  You can get the swingweight EXACTLY the way you want it.  Use a high-quality, exact-fit hardened bit.  Use a ratchet wrench for the bit with an extended handle.  Heat center of the weight (where the threads are) 15 sec with propane, use wrench to loosen.  Not successful?  15 more seconds will do it.  Don't use a poor quality bit and wallow out the recess.  Use torque from the extended handle on a bit that gets purchase in the recess.  Don't have propane, high-quality bit or long-handled wrench?  Let someone do it for you 😄

Any chance heating the weight leaves heat/burn marks on the head?

No.  As mentioned, put a torch directly on the screw.  Use a proper hardened torx bit.  They will come out.  I pulled all the screws out of some Gen 3 XP heads, the style head with 9 screws each, and I got every one out.

When you replace the weight do You add some red loctite?

No.  Typically, there is some remnant loctite remaining, which while not as strong as original, it's plenty strong to hold the screws from falling out.  Or, use blue. Red is more extreme than necessary.

PXG changed the process from Gen 3 to Gen 4 on the loctite.  3's were very easy with minimal heat, 4's and more recent was a different story.

As I mentioned you need a very high heat source like a propane torch.  Low heat from a butane or heat gun will heat the entire head of the club before the weight is loose enough to remove.

I provided a link to what you need above.

Or, if you don't want to heat the head itself, heat the torx bit head.  Insert it into the screw for a bit and try to release it.  Doesn't work?  Try again.

Take the next size larger torx bit and pound it into the stripped hole using a hammer.  Heat the screw first with a torch.

Thx, figured as much.  As an aside, I recently got a TE c722 and was told by their c.s. that the e722 weights were compatible.....they are not😬...after inspecting the c722, I thought they looked quite similar to the PXG wood/hybrid weights.....sure enough they fit!  I was hoping the PXG irons would work as they come.in silver and match the c722 color vs. the black PXGs.

Sorry for the tj boys, carry on🙃

The gen3 PXG heard don't require security bits, but it seems the later heads do.  Look at the center of the screw; if there is a nib there, that's security type.
