I230 graphite shaft options… what’s working for you ?

So, in some initial testing sim leaning towards the i230 irons.   I’m 64 and  hover around par but my ball flight and spin need help.  ( too low, not enough spin) .   Pings stock graphite options are pretty limited with the alta and recoil 780 smacwrap  as options.   Anyone playing those with success or open to other options/opinions.    Thanks in advance

Playing to a 3-4 index, 70+ yrs young, I go with after market shaft options vs OEM offerings.   I tested a good deal of graphite, including recoil, but went with composite, steel and graphite shafts.  First Steelfiber i110cw, stiff, then MMT stiff because both are easier to get to my desired D2/D3 swing weight.

 

Current setup is a stout Tensei AV White Am2, 92S in 2i, and MMT i85S in 3i & 4i, MMT i95S in 5i-9i.

I’ve reshafted a couple of older ping sets (i20’s and Eye 2’s) with Alta CB pullouts. I can say that the change has been dramatic.  Noticeably higher trajectory and spin is good.  I tested the smacwraps and found they didn’t give me the right feel - inconsistent.  
FWIW, I’m early 70’s, 7 index, once a 2, but have lost a lot of speed.

I have absolutely loved my Axiom 105s in my i230s, if you’re considering aftermarket options. I’ve posted a ton about them in the Fujikura members’ experience thread.

 

A strong option that Ping offers is Recoil Dart 105s. I’ve found them a little lower-launching and spinning than Axioms and MMTs in the same weight category and flex, which pairs nicely with i230s’ relatively higher launch and spin.

I'm very happy with the performance of the Dart 105s in my i230s, but it you are looking to increase launch the AltaCB or Recoil 780 are both reasonable choices.  It isn't graphite but the Elevate 95 might be the highest launching of their stock choices.  The Recoil Dart also comes in lighter weights than 105.  Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback,  it seems like both the alta and recoil are “high launching” and it seems the alta a little higher then recoil???? Fair statement?

I played the 780 SmacWraps in i210 and i59 and liked them quite a bit - great feel in my opinion and easy to control trajectory.

 

However I now have two sets of i230's both with the Recoil Dart that's also an excellent feeling shaft although in my hands it plays a little stiffer to flex than the SmacWrap.

 

One set is Dart 105's in F4 (stiff) and the other is Dart 75's in F2 (senior).

 

I'm going to be 71 in March so (obviously) I'm doing some pretty dramatic experimenting with weight and flex trying to find what works best for me.

 

I played the 105's most of this last season and only have one round in with the 75's so far plus some range time.

 

From this small sample size I do think that I'm going to like the 75's better as they're just a little easier to swing and hit although the difference in feel is nowhere nearly as dramatic as some might think.

 

The F2 is not the least bit "whippy" and I think would stand up well to a pretty aggressive swing.

 

Both are capable of launching quite high if that's the shot I'm trying to hit but otherwise have a nice mid - high trajectory.

 

That being said it's extremely easy to flight either of them down when necessary.

 

For what it's worth I carry the seven iron in either set 155 -160 and the nine iron around 135 - 140.

I think the Alta CB should work great for you, playing the Alta in r flex and carry the ball 145 with a 7 iron, I hit the s flex but could not see much difference.
