How much do you spend a year on golf?

Trust me..When you retire the cost goes up.

 

I've been retired for a full year. Before I retired I played 5 times a month. Now 12+ times a month. I try to keep my greens fee to average $40 a round. Considering I am in an area of $70 and up courses on average I have to shop around and travel a bit to hit that $40 mark. A lot of times I choose price over quality but hey I am out and playing. Last year we had a mild winter so I continued to play 2-3 times a week during the winter. I've taken a break the last two weeks but unless the weather turns bad this year I will be back out there. 

 

I may have panicked last year at retirement. I buy things when the price is right.  I bought a lot of balls, gloves, a few pairs of shoes, and clothes last year around this time. I stocked up because of that feeling of not working anymore.  If I never bought another golf item I still wouldn't run out of anything in my lifetime. 

 

So for 2023 it was cart and greens fees only for me. Wait a minute. My new pair of golf shoes were delivered today. lol

 

I am really happy with my bag but when the new Ping wedges come out they will be in my bag next year. It's always something.

Belong to a country club so I am right at $11k before I stick a tee in the ground.  That being said I play just as much tennis as I do golf, so split that in half, so golf starts at $5500.  No fee for the round other than cart fee, and I probably have carts for ~50% of rounds.  That takes me to about $6k for home club playing expenses.  I play a premium ball but dont lose many at our course, so a few hundred bucks for balls and gloves.

 

Fortunately I am not an equipment junkie so that is not really an expense at all.  Any equipment changes can be chalked up to Christmas/Birthday/anniversary/fathers day gifts.

 

Limited travel and away golf, but the member/guest gets me for $1400.  

 

All in all I am in for about $10k.  

 

However, my club bill is usually around $1700 but that includes food and lots of tennis activity (drills, leagues, strings) as well as stuff for kids and wife.

 

Also, hopefully headed to Ireland for my 50th next summer.  That will probably be $5k - $7k by itself.

Since my life for the past 2+ years has been one big golf trip, I guess I have to include the cost of the RV parks and gas. I'll leave out the food and drinks, since I'd be doing that anyway.

 

I'm averaging 20 rounds a month at roughly $75 a round. I play plenty of inexpensive courses for less than $50, but they're offset by the pricey rounds. $1500 a month.

 

Clubs, shoes, and clothing are negligible. Probably average $750 a year. Haven't bought a golf ball in years thanks to the generous donations of premium balls left out on the courses. Lol.

 

The RV itself was $140,000, but like an initiation fee at a CC, let's leave that out. The insurance is $150 a month. RV parks average $1500 a month. Gas costs $500 a month for the RV, and $150 for the Honda. 

 

So, monthly costs are $3,800 a month, or $45,600 a year. Ouch. 

 

On the positive side, I've played 478 different courses in 42 states and 7 provinces in the past 25 months, including 476 new courses.

Guessing 50 local rounds ($3500) + Mar Bandon Trip ($3K all in for 4 nights/7 rounds/caddies) + WAY too much club tinkering/balls/grips $6K (ouch) =  $12K. 

 

Feeling pretty good about my bag (yes, i have said that before) and going to enter the 2024 Bag challenge which would be a big shift for me.

I plan to do day trips to explore the local 9 hole courses in the area.  I may spend as much on travel and meals as green fees.

Probably $10k cad, thankfully my under 30 dues are still cheapish and I get cost on all my clubs and clothes.

I calculate it on an "all-in" basis each year, so including club dues, golf trips, equipment purchases (including balls and gloves, which add up to a lot), food and drink at the course, etc. I usually land in the $14k - $17k range. This year though, it's going to be north of $25k due to a variety of factors. Club had a capital assessment and I bumped into another membership category on age, plus my wife discovered the F&B service at the pool (which goes into the golf bucket), Streamsong trip, have bought basically a new bag of clubs, etc. 

 

Expensive year, expensive hobby in general, but I raced motocross growing up and this is nothing compared to that.

Just under $20K,   That's for me and She who must be obeyed.

 

RETIRED well over 100 rounds this year.  Dues and carts came just under $100 per round this year.  Considered going semi private but in the end it came down to the convenience and ease and 3 hour rounds at the fully private.  That and I was worried that I wouldn't get one of the 15 openings expected at the semi private and get shut out for 2024 (openings for non renewing members not until March).

 

It's not cheap for sure.  I'm in the Northeast and am envious of the cheap deals had elsewhere!

Too much and not enough!  If I sat down and figured it up, I know I would view the amount I spend on golf as too much but, considering how much I love to golf, I also know could easily spend more.

Golf trip to US in 2024 is going to cost us US$12000. Add that to all the regular costs and no change out of 25k.
