Original Ping My Day Weighting

Recommended Posts

I'm working on my own version of adding weight to old MnBr putters, starting with the Ping My Day, one of my favorite designs.

Like an idiot, I forgot to weigh the head before I started surgery on it. Does anyone happen to have Ping My Day head they could weigh for me to get a general comparator? My Anser head that's up next is 295g so I assume the My Day is similar.

Progress pics included for those interested, I'm waiting for the JB Weld to cure before final sanding/polish and then hopefully mill some grooves in the face. At that point I will evaluate whether to Cerakote or leave au naturel.

I did indeed use the pinewood derby weights, and then on top of that is JB Weld since it can be sanded and milled. The file marks are just from an initial flattening while the epoxy was semi-soft. Tomorrow when the epoxy has been able to cure 36+ hours I will give it all a thorough sanding at higher grits and then a polish. The milling will have to come later since I really don’t know how to do it and will have to learn how to program my new-ish CNC.

I actually think I've figured it out via a little experiment I did last night. I am planning to do four weights in the Anser, so I did 2 last night and got weights before and after. I retained 53% of the weight of the tungsten I added, which I think should be about the same for the My Day. Working backwards, I would estimate that the My Day started at about 308-309. It doesn't super matter. I'll buy another head and document it better next time.

@MachineHack one thing I did that solves a problem you brought up in the other thread: because I used a regular drill to make the holes rather than an end mill, I needed to fill the little cone created at the bottom of the hole. I took a piece of lead tape and shoved it down into the hole, then used a bolt and hammer to pound it roughly into the shape/space of the cone. Then I took the tungsten weight and used that to hammer it in further, until it ended up creating a nice flat bottom in the hole with a metal heaver than what it replaced. So it still ends up being a net add of weight.

It made me think, since lead has such a low melting point, you could probably get creative with making smaller holes to add lead elsewhere in a head by pouring molten lead into them. Obviously this involves a lot of exposure to lead which isn't great, but it does afford some more flexibility. I might try using melted lead to cap the weight ports in the future rather than JB weld if I'm adding them from the bottom.

Here's the Anser as it sits now (will need to patch that bubble in the epoxy):AK0iWDzMCU53mxhhSyutpzGwUsPR1bX4MQFaJmT_INVCw2Ma4eXFrY5Lzqhi0aYG2MFqw_LfQmimo9MDYbHhLgZRolqEWGXOxBvupbDjvBNcKj7Nw3sT51XIdUp7IP2uV6H3CHJw7B7iqE-zBsYC07CwWNT-X5T3TbGCA-ke2xePxbHBlGBO_ieg8fhsrnzqXgbbrH9RfivvpWVKmJi3hFvE4OX7QgIamzeuayKkoHdw_lGxbGiWQN_MGDaLcGKgzz2RhESggAZtM3KPvku6fEeN_g95v6TQffbVQun9fFPbNRalZqCJNGMn8n3UJ3BdjiPcLrgt57MiUig-tmYLpjUXw0gRltzTNCNUCorr9FE7mgGbNCHu7a_5Wb5obX-Kc_B9rRE1otr5kN-tZc1PB6M5Gw1SgQ8vvNLQQnyRMEgXVVRzAUNQn_SoeT_YjTkn-IPXYIddOMONpn4SDdacnMlmLdSdYb5A5gZcEJzr0yaBLl2vzmPFaUDCWhqYLpHt5s_L-HsK5PjI1ODwmkOJSuOqtcz5lMvII01zbUwhvr0yeCf-mqM4bLTHIe41Kkfpp8lncBER5X21bfuKXly4I9y3H8r_5wYsH2XT1uLj6UNvfMDhcRhfO3BsXnwUGt4cvilsFVHNNxNhCgv15ehkJ340CSBgia3hEb4B_-sKqFP8FFvpd-3kEgkOOiKiPO8yCD2uddsvAcEwgF1X200c6oiUk7uJup5-ZSRYOfn2I9qD3y1_7biTrFFARC6Gyj8-LGML0PPJfirBHgszXyAccpLlGtCUnZrbM2pvE-18oYzVWumZPkXyvy2J3-_BX3omcK-Si8CJx6jtUGXeEW6pvCprbuepFZGuodTTbibnrReQzXhw-XiQODpGwBoJHT9tw-eis82w83ybbHPBBwnl9syEVXca4BmJB9W923zbwuBfMH03740KXK_G93pXWu8_P-rqLXBlWWc6iFJnudqiWYHAUYezUOqy3KED0BRhNRqTgZr3MBvd9bpBaI3dxZZj806ztOCQqOo92dRoq5fGMaMIwetlbk1PgHPWuRWw1V4wEiPXuJLYoIw43XXE0Jjpn-UDQCgvXZWhcTyEtw5emBnS9rX7rnfdcGjUjiTE-VOzd4iSk3LpuD-J1JdoKppx1nlVMUJ9DVsXac1dmVTCdD8NyiKA6nx6SzVvIKIeIs4UKuJePfe9_fABs5xAvboNIJnazQE9nAa-e7Z_foFzcoK8o4jXL0BXK5VgBqLGKpasa6WsXlkNsI7KP7d4VmiqYJHExgAj4LewWg1nuv_RzohCihuvyJ9X5-US_bMkYgBnZvTG8c8YVaQFJpPyJtg7UtV_9EJTjqKYkZeLu1fLlGdLdl4bHdx-TW9ghrQLwgIEuxU3aHafrr9pzanSeZwSfr0HaAATj3CfpAx5cxLQnEhH32Mb5eP0xucmhvvb9iKgm9ySHYamGMHnTss2i4yCnNW1_tnGlG6FG6MFzey7RzsgTFCoIpNZYMuVy1T89Smk_X20Ff76sk4H4HENgNY3n_rplDvV4Ysw5wIEJ-KHGN17d7N3OityoFewD3CAQ5VlOOq-1vPyZ5x1QOW6_QjHZZs3DAMneWqJJtRyFBk4QJ1gAqeoy-jppNsi63uyGuH-nBIB2CU1RsYOgOza80S1pQd8UFgew4eK4Q=s1868-w1868-h1271-s-no-gm?authuser=0

Interesting side effect of starting with heel weighting only, reduced toe-hang (ignore tool marks and melted ferrule)

Ah nice little work around

honestly MgBr is so soft you could probably get away with just showing a 3/8” end mill in your jacobs chuck next time. I use end mills in the Jacob chuck of my lathe tailstock all the time and it works surprisingly well, especially since you’re not putting axial load on it the worst it’s gonna do is slip and spin in the chuck

I’d picked up a cheap 3/8 end mill bit off the evil bay and give it a try next time lol

Sorry for possible threadjack, but I had a quick MyDay question that doesn't seem to warrant a new thread!

I picked up a MyDay at the local Play it again Sports (for $10 whole dollars, lol!!!!) and it appears to have been bent over the years, which would make sense either due to how soft the metal is, or because a previous owner wanted to change how the ball was rolling.  So my question is, for those who have or are familiar with the MyDay, is the angle between the hosel and the neck supposed to be 90°?  Mine appears to be a bit wider than that, effectively lessening the loft angle.  But, if that is the original design of the putter, then so be it.

Thanks in advance!

I have accrued a few old pings over time, all of which have the plumber’s neck, and from what I can tell they’re all roughly 90° at the joint you describe. I’d just be careful about bending yours back, the manganese bronze is like silly putty: moved gently it’ll bend forever, moved too harshly it’ll snap like it’s nothing.
