Which Modus Wedge Shaft with Modus 105 Iron Shafts?

Bogeyman_MD

Recommended Posts

I’ve been reading a lot of old threads on this subject and always see the 115 wedge shaft recommended for people playing the 105 shafts in their irons. Why is that? It seems that the 105 wedge shaft would be the logical progression to these since they come in at 111g. The 115’s at 122g seems like a big jump, I understand that works for some but I’m surprised to not see more recommendations for the 105 to go with the 105 iron shafts.

Anyone playing the 105 wedge shafts with the 105 iron shafts?

I believe those are the uncut weights on the shafts. So depending on how much is cut its going to be lower. It is still going to heavier than the number stated but generally its recommended to go a little heavier on the wedges than your irons for control. The 105g thus should be for players that have iron shaft weights of like 70-90g.

This is just a generalization not a mandate so if you want it be just slightly heavier than your irons shaft then just go with that.

The Modus 105 irons shafts in stiff are 106.5 grams, and the wedge shafts are 111 grams.  I have the 105 wedge shafts as they match up perfectly to the irons shafts.  It's all a preference thing, but this time I went with shafts that are the closest to my irons in weight.  Some just play the 105 iron shafts in their wedges, and some jump up in weight to the Modus 115 iron shafts or the 115 wedge shafts.  To me that is too much of a difference in feel, weight and profile, so I went with the 105 wedge.

Plus, the Modus 105 wedge is the same profile as the 105 iron shaft, just a little stiffer in the butt and a little softer in the tip.

Modus 105 in X flex are 112g, so then it might make more sense to get the 115 Wedge shaft.

This is the way I am leaning as it seems that is exactly how Nippon meant for them to be paired. It’s surprising there isn’t more talk of this setup. Thank you.

or the howard jones spinner option pinned in this forum:  modus 105x 8 iron if you play the modus 105s....

That is essentially the same thing as the Modus 105 wedge shaft.

Nippon was doing it years ago with the WV wedge shafts, just nobody took notice until the Modus stuff.

  • 1 year later...

Starting to look at new wedges and thinking about changing wedge shafts.

I switched to Modus 105X iron shafts last year 5 - GW. I currently have S400s in my sand and lob wedge, so I’m not sure whether to stick with those or try the Modus 115 wedge shafts. It seems like the main difference will be the weight.

Can anyone compare the S400 to Modus Wedge 115?

They are both similar in terms of EI profile as the Modus 105/115 were modeled after DG.  The difference of course would be weight where the S400 is heavier.

Modus 115 Wedge is not modelled after DG. Modus 115 Wedge is softer tipped than the Modus 105/115 iron specific shaft and S400.

If the @zap311 likes the 105X but wants more weight in a similar profile, I would recommend Modus 115X or Modus 125S PW shaft.

Modus 105 Wedge shaft

Modus 115 38in 8 iron shaft S Flex

Modus 115 37in wedge shaft S Flex

One of these should give the feel + spin

Figured this thread might be the best spot, but in a similar position. If I were to order vokeys from wedge works, they don’t offer the Modus 105 wedge.

If I pay the 105S in the irons and then move to the 120R in the wedges, would I in theory be okay?

The Modus 105 and Modus 120 are very different profiles, so I would say no, you would be better off with with 105/115/125

So I have the 105S in my irons as well and I actually used Howards 8 iron spinner trick and I have had the best results with my wedges ever after the switch like 5 rounds ago

So for clarification, did you start with a 105S shaft, tip trim to 8-iron length, and then butt trim to desired wedge length?

Short answer: no I used a 105x 8 iron in my GW and butt trim inly

longer answer: I would recommend reading the thread as there are several ways to approach it. Ultimately going one flex up in the same shaft and only having to butt trim felt like the easiest path to me. it was also a path that was open to me since I’m only in the s flex in my irons. If I was already in the x flex then I do think I would have to go down the path of butt and tip trimming.

I won’t pretend to understand all the ins and outs of it but essentially increasing the stiffness lowers ball flight and increases spin which is useful for the wedges. Hopefully I’m not misrepresenting that, but I do know it has worked for me
